  • The present work aims to report the consequences of Darcy-Forchheimer medium in flow of Cross fluid model toward a stretched surface. Flow in porous space is categorized by Darcy-Forchheimer medium. Further heat transfer characteristics are examined via thermal radiation and heat generation/absorption. Transformation procedure is used. The arising system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations is solved numerically by means of shooting method. The effects of different flow variables on velocity, temperature, concentration, skin friction, and heat transfer rate are discussed. The obtained outcomes show that velocity was enhanced with the increase in the Weissenberg number but decays with increase in the porosity parameter and Hartman number. Temperature field is boosted by thermal radiation and heat generation; however, it decays with the increase in the Prandtl number.

  • Graft polymerization of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate(HEMA) and styrene, from both their binary and unitary systems, onto polytetrafluoroethylene(PTFE) film was investigated by means of the simultaneous ${\gamma}-ray$ induced method. The effect of various parameters such as monomer concentration, dose rate, absorbed dose, HEMA/styrene feed ratios and the type of diluent on the extent of grafting in unitary and binary systems was studied. It was observed that when unitary HEMA was used for grafting, the grafting extent was very slight, whereas when comonomers were used, a good grafting yield could be obtained. Inclusion of sulfuric acid in the monomer solution resulted in enhanced grafting yields.

  • To find effective way of the production of distilled water for drought and flood with solar radiation, three boxes were made same base each 1000mm ${\times} $1000mm and tops are 45 degree. Individual boxes contained the sea water, rain water and surface water were placed at the same location and same time. Condensation of each box has been compared. On clear day production of distilled water in the box with sea water was 36% and 32% less than boxes with rain water and surface water. The maximum condensation reached when the temperature of the top and bottom parts are equal. As concentration of sea water increased production of distilled water was decreased. In the box with sea water, the surface temperature was lower than 3cm below the surface. Optimum collector area for producing distilled water 2000ml of these three boxes were $3.75m^2$

  • The influence of lead cations on natural quartz (QZ) from Egypt as a glass shielding material for the composition with nominal formula (10Na2O - (90 - x) QZ - xPbO (where x = 30, 35, 40, 45 and 50 mol %)) was examined. The studied samples are synthesized via the melt quenching method at 1050 ℃. The X-ray diffraction XRD patterns were confirmed the glass nature for studied samples. Moreover, the optical properties, and the transparency for all compositions were examined by UV-Vis spectroscopy. Also, the major elemental composition of the natural quartz were estimated via the X-ray fluorescence (XRF) technique. Further, the density and molar volume were determined. Furthermore, the nuclear shielding parameters such as, mass attenuation coefficient, effective atomic number, electronic density, the total atomic, and electronic cross sections as well as the mean free path, and the half value layer with different gamma ray energies (81 keV-1407 keV) were calculated. Besides, the results showed that the shielding behavior towards the gamma ray radiation for all glass samples was increased as the increment in PbO concentration in the glass system.

  • Korean nuclear power plants (NPPs) have various radiation protection programs to attain radiation exposure as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA). In terms of ALARA, this paper provides a comprehensive overview of administrative dose control for occupationally-exposed workers in Korean NPPs. In addition to dose limits, administrative dose constraints are implemented to resolve an inequity of radiation exposure in which some individuals in NPPs receive relatively higher doses than others. Occupational dose constraints in Korean NPPs are presented in this paper with the background of how those values were determined. For pressurized water reactors, 80% and 90% of the annual average limit for an effective dose, 20 mSv/y, are set as the primary and secondary dose constraints, respectively. Pressurized heavy water reactors (PHWRs) have also established the primary and secondary dose constraints corresponding to 70% and 80% of the effective dose limit, and additional constraints for tritium concentration are provided to control internal exposure in PHWRs. Follow-up measures for exceeding these administrative dose constraints are also introduced compared to exceeding the dose limits. Finally, analysis results of dose distributions show how the implementation of administrative dose constraints impacted the occupational dose distributions in Korean NPPs during the years 2009-2018.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest improvement plans for prevention regulations by reflecting the toxicity, fire and explosion effects of hazardous materials factories and surrounding areas using an off-site consequence assessment program. Regarding the effects of the hydrogen cyanide leak accident, which is the 1st petroleum of the 4th class flammable liquid, Areal Locations of Hazardous Atmospheres (ALOHA) program was used to compare and analyze the extent of damage effects for toxicity, overpressure, and radiation. As a result, the toxicity was analyzed to exceed 5km in the area with Acute exposure guideline level (AEGL)-2 concentration or higher, the overpressure was 103m in the range of 1 psi or more, and the radiant heat was analyzed to be 724m in the range of 2kw/m2 or more. Toxicity and radiation affected the area outside the hazardous material storage area, but the overpressure was limited to the inside of the hazardous material storage area. Therefore, we propose to improve the safety management of hazardous materials by conducting a risk assessment for hazardous materials and reflecting the results in internal and external emergency response plans to prepare prevention regulations.

  • This work synthesized four glass samples with a fixed ratio of PbO to Na2O and a variable ratio of BaO to B2O3. The linear attenuation coefficient (LAC) (μ, cm-1) and additional attenuator parameters were determined experimentally using a semiconductor detector and different gamma sources. The comparison was carried out between the experimental and the XCOM calculated results, with good agreement emerging between the two results. The impacts of the BaO substituting for the B2O3 on fabricated PNBB glasses' radiation shielding properties were discussed. By increasing the BaO substitution concentration between 10 and 25 mol.%, the LAC μ values (cm-1) increased by 76.60 %, 13.81 %, 12.56 %, and 12.52 % for the respective γ-ray energies of 0.059, 0.662, 1.173, and 1.332 MeV. The μ value reduction with raised gamma energy values increased the values of the calculated half-value thickness (Δ0.5) as a result of the μ and Δ0.5 values' reverse proportionality. Other shielding parameters such as the lead equivalent thickness (Δeq) and radiation protection efficiency were also determined for the present PNBB glass samples.

  • The current study aims to develop new clay bricks doped with metallic waste for radiation shielding applications. The aforementioned new bricks were fabricated with various metallic waste concentrations under a pressure rate reaching ≈114 MPa and firing temperature of 1100 ℃. The impacts of the metallic waste and the firing temperature on the developed brick samples' physical, radiation shielding, and structural properties were studied. In order to identify the fabricated bricks' mineral content, the X-ray diffraction pattern was used. Additionally, the fabricated bricks' porosity and density were experimentally determined, where the porosity was reduced by 28.03%, while their densities increased by ≈ 10.5% by raising the concentration of metallic waste. The linear attenuation coefficient (LAC) for the developed brick was investigated experimentally using a NaI (Tl) scintillation detector over the 0.033-1.408 MeV energy interval. The measured LAC values were enhanced by increasing the concentrations of metallic waste within the fabricated bricks over the examined energy interval. The fabricated brick's LAC enhancement improves the gamma-ray shielding characteristics. Therefore, the fabricated bricks are a cheap and suitable choice for radiation protection applications.

  • The current work deals with investigation of the gamma ray shielding properties for various natural stones from Vietnam to be applied in the radiation shielding applications. The physical and chemical properties affecting the γ-ray shielding performance were examined. The MH-300A density meter was utilized to measure the density (ρ, g/cm3) of stone samples, as well as the chemical composition of Vietnamese natural stones was measured using the X-ray fluorescence analyzer (Olympus X-5000). The study shows that the increase in Fe + Ca concentrations within the stone samples increases their density (from 2.48 to 2.86 g/cm3) accompanied with a reduction in the porosity (Φ, %) (from 8.23 to 0.15%) and water absorption (K, %) (from 3.42 to 0.05%) factors. Additionally, the increase in Fe + Ca concentrations increases the linear attenuation coefficient (μ, cm-1) of the studied stones, where the Vietnamese marble stone (M 3.1) with the highest Fe + Ca concentration (65.97 wt%) has the highest linear attenuation coefficient which varied between 3.781 and 0.155 cm-1 with raising the gamma ray energy between 0.040 and 1.332 MeV.

  • Purpose: For estimation of yields of l)NA damages induced by radiation and enhanced by oxygen, a mathematical model was used and tested. Materials and Methods: Reactions of the products of water radiolysis were modeled as an ordinary time dependant equations. These reactions include formation of radicals, DNA damage, damage repair, restitution, and damage fixation by oxygen and H-radical. Several rate constants were obtained from literature while others were calculated by fitting an experimental data. Sensitivity studies were performed changing the chemical rate constant at a constant oxygen number density and varying the oxygen concentration. The effects of oxygen concentration as well as the damage fixation mechanism by oxygen were investigated. Oxygen enhancement ratio(OER) was calculated to compare the simulated data with experimental data. Results: Sensitivity studies with oxygen showed that DNA survival was a function of both oxygen concentration and the magnitude of chemical rate constants. There were no change in survival fraction as a function of dose while the oxygen concentration change from 0 to 1.0 x 10$^{7}$ . When the oxygen concentration change from 1.0 $\times$ 107 to 1.0 $\times$ 101o, there was significant decrease in cell survival. The OER values obtained from the simulation study were 2.32 at 10% cell survival level and 1.9 at 45% cell survival level. Conclusion: Sensitivity studies with oxygen demonstrated that the experimental data were reproduced with the effects being enhanced for the cases where the oxygen rate constants are largest and the oxygen concentration is increased. OER values obtained from the simulation study showed good agreement for a low level of cell survival. This indicated that the use of the semi-empirical model could predict the effect of oxygen in cell killing.
