The Preparation of a Thermally Responsive Surface by Ion Beam-induced Graft Polymerization

  • In this study, the preparation of a temperature-responsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm)-grafted surface was performed using an eco-friendly and biocompatible ion beam-induced surface graft polymerization. The surface of a perfluoroalkoxy (PFA) film was activated by ion implantation and N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) was then graft polymerized selectively onto the activated regions of the PFA surfaces. Based on the results of the peroxide concentration and grafting degree measurements, the amount of the peroxide groups formed on the implanted surface was dependant on the fluence, which affected the grafting degree. The results of the FT-IR-ATR, XPS, and SEM confirmed that the NIPAAm was successfully grafted onto the implanted PFA. Moreover, the contact angle measurement at different temperatures revealed that the surface of the PNIPAAm-grafted PFA film was temperature-responsive.

Bismuth modified gamma radiation shielding properties of titanium vanadium sodium tellurite glasses as a potent transparent radiation-resistant glass applications

  • This work reported the radiation shielding characteristic of the bismuth titanium vanadium sodium tellurite glass system. The density of the specially-developed glass samples was increased from 2.21 to 4.01 g/cm3 with the addition of Bi2O3, despite the fact the molar volume is decease within 85.43-54.79 cm3/mol. The WinXcom program was used to approximate the effect of Bi2O3 on the gamma radiation shielding parameters of bismuth titanium vanadium sodium tellurite glasses. The ㎛ values decrease with the increase of Bi2O3 concentration. The computed data shows that the glass sample with 20 mol.% of Bi2O3 content has the greatest radiation attenuation performance in comparison to other selected glasses. The Bi2O3-TiO2-V2O5-Na2O-TeO2 glass system shows excellent neutron shielding material with high long-term light transmittance and discharge resistance and could be potentially used as transparent radiation-resistant shielding glass applications.

A Study on the Characteristics of Surface Ozone Concentration at Dongsamdong, Pusan (부산 동삼동 지역의 지표오존농도 특성 연구)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the characteristics of surface ozone concentration and occurrence of high ozone concentration using hourly ozone and meteorological data of 1997~1998 in Pusan coastal area. Monthly mean ozone concentration was highest in Spring(35.4ppb) and lowest in Winter(22.2ppb). Relative standard deviation indicating clearness of observation site was 0.42 that is similar to urban area. The diurnal variation of ozone concentration of Dongsamdong showed maximum at 15~16LST and minimum 07~08LST that typical pattern of ozone concentration. In ozone episode period(May 18~23, 1998), diurnal change of ozone concentration was very high, and ozone concentration was related to meteorological parameters such as temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, cloud amount and radiation on a horizontal surface.

  • Mice were whole body irradiated with dose of 2.88Gy and 7.2Gy(Co-60) in order to observe the morphological and functional changes in radio sensitive mouse ovary. Microtechnical sectionates of $7{\mu}m$ thickness from ovary were made for light microscopy and concentrations of progesterone, testosterone and estradiol in ovarian homogenates were analyzed by radioimmunoassay. Gamma radiation resulted in the increase of atretic ratio of preantral and antral follicles, the increase of progesterone concentration in ovarian homogenates, and the low level of testosterone and estradiol. It is suggested that radiation protect the activity of $3{\beta}-HSD$(hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase) and isomerase in the follicular theca cell followed by low level of testosterone and estradiol and thereafter follicular atresia proceed.

A Study on the Combined Heat Transfer and Analysis Fire Induced Combustion Gas in a partially Open Enclosure (개구부가 있는 밀폐공간내 화재의 복합열전달 및 연소가스 분석에 관한 연구)

  • The natural convection and combined heat transfer induced by fire in a rectangular enclosure is numerically studied. The model for this numerical analysis is partially opened right wall. The solution procedure includes the standard k-$\varepsilon$ model for turbulent flow and the discrete ordinates method (DOM) is used for the calculation of radiative heat transfer equation. In numerical study, SIMPLE algorithm is applied for fluid flow analysis, and the investigations of combustion gas induced by fire is performed by FAST model of HAZARD I program. In this study, numerical simulation on the combined naturnal convection and radiation is carried out in a partial enclosure filled with absorbed-emitted gray media, but is not considered scattering problem. The streamlines, isothermal lines, average radiation intensity and kinetic energy are compared the results of pure convection with those of the combined convection-radiation, the combined heat transfer. Comparing the results of pure convection with those of the combined convection-radiation, the combined heat transfer analysis shows the stronger circulation than those of the pure convection. Three different locations of heat source are considered to observe the effect of heat source location on the heat transfer phenomena. As the results, the circulation and the heat transfer in the left region from heating block are much more influenced than those in the right region. It is also founded that the radiation effect cannot be neglected in analyzing the building in fire. And as the results of combustion gas analysis from FAST model, it is found that O2 concentration is decreased according to time. While CO and CO2 concentration are rapidly increased in the beginning(about 100sec), but slowly decreased from that time on.

  • Recently, many studies on air quality prediction models have been performed to develope new ones. The purpose of the study is to obtain a method to predict $SO_2$ concentration simply in urban area using hour-to-hour meteorological data such as the wind speed, the incoming solar radiation, and the cloud coverages. The relationships between with speed and $SO_2$ concentrations are plotted in flgures. Predicted concentration curves are obtained for equation C=b/(1+au).

Meteorological Characteristics of High-Ozone Episode Days in Daegu, Korea (대구시의 고농도 오존 발생 일에 나타나는 기상학적 특성)

  • This study analyzes the surface ozone and meteorological data in Daegu for a period from 1997 to 1999. It also investigates the meteorological characteristics of high ozone episodes. For this study the high ozone episode has been defined as a daily maximum ozone concentration higher than 100ppb in at least one station among six air quality monitoring stations in Daegu, Korea. The frequency of episodes is 13 days. The frequency is the highest in May and September. The average value of daily maximum ozone concentration is 81.6ppb, and 8-hour average ozone concentration is 58.6ppb for the high episodes. This shows that ozone pollution is continuous and wide-ranging in Daegu. The daily maximum ozone concentration is positively correlated to solar radiation and daily maximum temperature, but negatively correlated to relative humidity, wind speed and cloud amount. The maximal correlation coefficient to solar radiation is 0.45. The differences between high ozone episode day's daily mean meteorological value and monthly mean value are +1.58hPa for sea level pressure, +3.45${\circ}$C for maximum temperature, -5.69% for relative humidity, -0.46ms$^{-1}$ for wind speed, -1.79 for cloud amount, and +3.97MJm$^{-2}$ for solar radiation, respectively. This shows that strong solar radiation, low wind speed and no precipitation between 0700${\sim}$1100LST are favorite conditions for high ozone episodes. It is related to the morning stagnant condition.

Preliminary Evaluation of the Activity Concentration Limits for Consumer Goods Containing NORM

  • Background: To protect the public from natural radioactive materials, the 'Act on safety control of radioactive rays around living environment" was established in Korea. There is an annual effective dose limit of 1 mSv for products, but the activity concentration limit for products is not established yet. Materials and Methods: To suggest the activity concentration limits for consumer goods containing NORM, in this research, we assumed the "small room model" surrounding the ICRP reference phantom to simulate the consumer goods in contact with the human bodies. Using the Monte Carlo code MCNPX, we evaluate the effective dose rate for the ICRP reference phantom in a small room with dimension of phantom size and derived the activity concentration limit for consumer goods. Results and Discussion: The consumer goods have about 1600, 1200 and $19000Bq{\cdot}kg^{-1}$ for $^{226}Ra$, $^{232}Th$ and $^{40}K$, and the activity concentration limits are about six times comparing with the values of building materials. We applied the index to real samples, though we did not consider radioactivity of $^{40}K$, indexes of the some samples are more than 6. However, this index concept using small room model is very conservative, for the consumer goods over than index 6, it is necessary to reevaluate the absorbed dose considering real usage scenario and material characteristics. Conclusion: In this research, we derived activity concentration limits for consumer goods in contact with bodies and the results can be used as preliminary screening tool for consumer goods as index concept.

We cannot elevate the temperature up t to 3$\alpha$)()C without suitable radiation shield because rate of radiation loss r rapidly increase in such a high temperature regions. There were no good r radiation shield but we discovered that the p-BN could work as an excellent r radiation shield after checking of the many substances. S Secondly I will show several interesting and unusual 뻐ysical properties of obtained crystals under high magnetic field, hi양1 pressure and also i including angle resolve photoemission spectroscopy.   • Finite element method has been applied to solve the fundamental governing equations of natural convective, electrically conducting, incompressible fluid flow past an infinite vertical plate surrounded by porous medium in presence of thermal radiation, viscous dissipation, Soret and Dufour effects. In this research work, the results of coupled partial differential equations are found numerically by applying finite element technique. The sway of significant parameters such as Soret number, Dufour number, Grashof number for heat and mass transfer, Magnetic field parameter, Thermal radiation parameter, Permeability parameter on velocity, temperature and concentration evaluations in the boundary layer region are examined in detail and the results are shown in graphically. Furthermore, the effect of these parameters on local skin friction coefficient, local Nusselt number and Sherwood numbers is also investigated. A very good agreement is noticed between the present results and previous published works in some limiting cases.
