  • In this paper, we analyze an M / M / 1 queueing system where there are incentive conflicts among customers. Self-interested customers' decisions whether to join the system or not may not necessarily induce a socially optimal congestion level. As a way to alleviate the over-congestion, toll imposition was used in Naor's paper [3]. Instead of using a toll mechanism, we study the usefulness of imperfect information on system state (queue size, for example) as a way to reduce the over-congestion by self-interested customers. The main conclusion of this paper is that by purposefully giving fuzzy or imperfect information on the current queue size we can improve the congestion in the system. This result might look contradictory to rough intuition since perfect information should give better performance than imperfect information. We show how this idea is verified. In deriving this result, we use the concept of Nash equilibrium (pure and mixed strategy) as introduced in game theory. In some real situations, using imperfect information is easier to apply than imposing a toll, and thus the result of this paper has practical implications.

  • In this study we consider a CONWIP system in which the processing times at each station follow an exponential distribution and the demands for the finished products arrive according to a compound Poisson process. The demands that are not satisfied instantaneously are assumed to be lost. We assume that the lot size at each station is greater than one. For this system we develop an approximation method to obtain the performance measures such as steady state probabilities of the number of parts at each station, average number of parts at each station and the proportion of lost demands. For the analysis of the proposed CONWIP system, we model the CONWIP system as a closed queueing network with a synchronization station and analyze the closed queueing network using a product form approximation method. A recursive technique is used to solve the subnetwork in the application of the product-form approximation method. To test the accuracy of the approximation method, the results obtained from the approximation method were compared with those obtained by simulation. Comparisons with simulation have shown that the accuracy of the approximate method is acceptable.

  • In this paper, we quantify the tradeoff between security and performance in secure data communication systems based on the queueing theory, and propose the optimization methods, such as the preprocessing, a message segmentation, compression, integration of compression and encryption and integration of user authentication and access control, which are able to reduce the delay induced by the security mechanisms and protocols. Moreover, we analyze the average delay for the secure data communication systems through the computer simulations, which are modeled by M/M/1, M/E$_2$/1 and M/H$_2$/1 queueing systems, respectively. We consider the DES, RSA digital signature and the combination of IDEA and RSA as security mechanisms for applying security services.

  • In this paper, delay performances are evaluated and compared for three dual-plane switch architectures; dual input queue/dual switching plane (DQDP The terms of DQDP, DQDP-PS and DQDP-GQ were not used in [Turner88], [Lee96] and [Son97]. All these tern are designated in this letter for convenience.) switch, DQDP with plane selector (DQDP-PS) switch and DQDP based on output group queueing (DQDP-OGQ) switch. We show that under random traffic these switches give almost identical delay performances to that of the output queueing switch but under bursty traffic only the DQDP-PS and the DQDP-OGQ switches ran do.

  • Using the results of the expected busy periods for the dyadic Min(N, D) and Max(N, D) operating policies in a controllable M/G/1 queueing model, an important relation between them is derived. The derived relation represents the complementary property between two operating policies. This implies that it could be possible to obtained desired system characteristics for one of the two operating policies from the corresponding known system characteristics for the other policy. Then, upper and lower bounds of expected busy periods for both dyadic operating policies are also derived.

  • The purpose of this paper is to provide a transient diffusion approximation of queue size distribution for M/G/m/N system. The M/G/m/N system can be expressed as follows. The interarrival times of customers are exponential and the service times of customers have general distribution. The system can hold at most a total of N customers (including the customers in service) and any further arriving customers will be refused entry to the system and will depart immediately without service. The queueing system with finite capacity is more practical model than queueing system with infinite capacity. For example, in the design of a computer system one of the important problems is how much capacity is required for a buffer memory. It its capacity is too little, then overflow of customers (jobs) occurs frequently in heavy traffic and the performance of system deteriorates rapidly. On the other hand, if its capacity is too large, then most buffer memories remain unused.

  • In this study we consider a CONWIP system in which the processing times at each station follow an exponential distribution and the demands for the finished Products arrive according to a compound Poisson process. The demands that are not satisfied instantaneously are assumed to be backordered. For this system we develop an approximation method to obtain the performance measures such as steady state probabilities of the number of parts at each station, the proportion of backordered demands, the average number of backordered demands and the mean waiting time of a backordered demand. For the analysis of the proposed CONWIP system, we model the CONWIP system as a closed queueing network with a synchronization station and analyze the closed queueing network using a product form approximation method. A matrix geometric method is used to solve the subnetwork in the application of the product-form approximation method. To test the accuracy of the approximation method, the results obtained from the approximation method were compared with those obtained by simulation. Comparisons with simulation have shown that the approximate method provides fairly good results.

  • In this paper, we consider a discrete-time two-phase queueing system. We derive the PCF of the system size and show that it is decomposed into two probabilty generating functions (PCFs), one of which is the PGF of the system size in the standard Ceo/G/1 queue. Based on this PGF, we present the performance measure of interest such as the mean number of customers In the system.

  • ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) has a fixed-length packet transport scheme. It is one of the promising proposals in B-ISDN.Since the packet length is fixed, it can be potentially to perform the various service to users. In this paper, a queueing model for an ATM multip`exer loaded by CBR and ON/OFF input sources is considered, and the two-queue system which each type of input sources has a queue with a finite capacity is analyzed. The cell loss probabilities for a performance measures of ATM multiplexer are derived, and are also evaluated through numerical examples. As a result, the cell loss probability of ON/OFF sources for the queue size is rapidly decreased when the multiplexed number and burstiness are increased. Since cells of the CBR source have lower priority than cells of the ON/OFF source, cell loss probabilities of CBR sources are accordingly high independently of CBR cell arrival rate when the number of CBR sources is large.

  • In this study the cell arrival processes from pre-buffer into multiplexer for MPEG(Motion Picture Experts Group) coding video sources are analyzed with consideration of the traffic periodicity in frame level. The analysis is performed by introducing the two arrival models, that is, periodic on/off source model and periodic uniform arrival model. Modulated $N^*D$/D/1 queueing system is utilized in periodic on/off source model, while ${\Sigma}{N_i}^*D_i$/D/1 queueing system is used in periodic uniform arrival model. The presented models are validated by comparing with computer simulations. Numerical results for periodic uniform arrival model are shown to be very accurate, but those of periodic on/off source model are shown to be inaccurate as the number of sources are increased.
