  • Recently there has been a high request for support for teachers' professional development and quality control to meet the demand of educational policy to introduce teacher evaluation, master teacher status, incentives for teacher competency, etc. It has been suggested that reeducation and support for professional development would be more effective to beginning teachers with a high developmental potential than to experienced teachers with routinized instruction. Since 2005, KICE-TLC has conducted research on the development of teacher supporting programs such as teaching consultation and pedagogical content knowledge(PCK) in school subjects. In line with the current education policy and previous research by KICE, this research has been conducted to meet the need for novice teacher induction by developing consulting program focused on PCK. The goal of this research was to (1) explore the in-depth meaning of PCK in light of teaching consultation, (2) conduct a preliminary study on how to develop teaching consulting programs for secondary beginning teachers, (3) develop teaching consulting programs focused on pedagogical content knowledge(PCK), and (4) suggest implications for educational policy regarding pre-service and in-service teachers' continuing professional development and support.

  • Interest and investment in drones that apply the concept of the 4th industrial revolution and ICT convergence advanced technology are continuing. The purpose of drone operation has been widely spread from the initial military use to the use of various industries such as construction, forestry, facilities, and agricultural support. In these industries, the training of pilots who can actually operate drones is increasing centering on the qualification system. However, the detailed standards including the training place, training place, educational environment, and education method for nurturing pilots are ambiguous, so the education through the oral instruction of the training instructor is continuing at the drone training site. In order to solve this problem, this study conducted a study on a dual control platform in which a training instructor could directly intervene in the pilot's flying drone to execute a map in order to improve the quality of synesthesia, which is essential in the field.

  • Despite the recent emphasis on mathematical communication, little practical guide has been provided for a teacher with what to do for orchestrating high-quality discussions in a mathematics classroom. This paper analyzed 20 elementary mathematics lessons which were recognized as effective instruction in Korea using an analytic framework with regard to 5 practices for orchestrating productive mathematics discussions (i.e., anticipating, monitoring, selecting, sequencing, & connecting) by Smith and Stein (2011) in terms of performance scales from Level 0 to 3. The results of this study showed that the most frequent levels were Level 1 including undesirable practices and Level 2 including insufficient practices. There were only one or two lessons per practice which were assessed as Level 3 of good performance. Specifically, Level 2 was the most frequent with regard to monitoring and selecting, whereas Level 1 was the most frequent as for the other practices. This paper provides some implications for co-ordinating productive mathematics discussions.

  • This study aims to give suggestions based on survey to improve the quality of Global Construction Engineer Training Program in line with the government goals. The domestic construction industry in Korea has kept shrinking, whereas the global construction market is forecasted to keep expanding in the future. It has become an urgent task to be taken up for construction contractors and engineering firms so as to improve their capacity, in particular, in the fields of planning, management, finance as well as engineering. To deal with the lack of capacity of the domestic engineers and to help them emerge as global players in the competitive overseas construction market, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport of the Korean government has designed a program called 'Global Construction Engineer Training Program.' The eligible target of the training program is mid-career professionals who are working for the construction contractors or engineering firms. To draw suggestions for this program, an importance-satisfaction analysis is conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the training program implemented by the S University. The S University, along with C University, was selected as an implementation organization of the program in 2014 by the government. Through an email survey, the participating students in the program were asked questions on the importance and satisfaction against 17 indicators classified into 5 categories: instruction method, professional knowledge of instructors, contents of program, curriculum, and facility and environment. The survey results show that students are satisfied with the overall quality of the program, but it was also found that they want the program opens more coursework on practical application of knowledge, case studies, and global networking.

  • An evaluation system of teaching is one of authentic assessment tools for improving the quality of higher education. The purpose of this study is to cultivate the class evaluation system in the college of engineering based on the empirical analysis of the results of the class evaluation. Especially, this study investigates the validity evidence using the confirmatory factor analysis of the class evaluation. The data used in this study were acquired from 49,127 student's evaluation responses of 471 courses offered in colleges of natural science and engineering at a university in Korea. The reliabilities are quite good for every construct by producing an index value from 0.92 to 0.98. The results provides a guideline for an appropriate measurement model to report the information, to clarify quality and appropriateness of instrument items, to make recommendations for which items should be left or merged in the revised instrument. A special suggestion for improving student's evaluation of each course is to prepare a well-designed instruction for students explaining why and how to evaluate the course in order to produce reliable and valid results.

  • The main goal of the research is to develop instructional consulting manual to help math teachers improve classroom teaching. Improving the quality of teaching in schools is stressed as a central focus of meaningful classroom instruction and high quality education. In this research, teaching consulting was defined as an activity that covers reflection process oriented towards formative assessment and continuing professional development. Within this context, subject-specific teaching consulting and teaching professionalism with focus on PCK was reviewed. Further, the questionnaire survey was conducted to investigate the current situation of teaching consulting and teachers' needs for consulting. And also, specific examples of subject-specific consulting based on our previous consulting experiences in math classes were shown. Alternative ways to improve subject teaching were derived through the conferences where consultants and consultees analyze video-taped lessons conducted by the consultees. By those results, a manual for invigorating teaching consulting was developed. The contents of the manual consists of setting conditions of teaching consulting and its implementation in the classroom teaching. The first part of the manual contains steps to establish teaching consulting system, the qualification and role of the consultant, system evaluation, etc. The second part of the manual presents the pre-preparation, prescription and implementation and follow-up management steps. Each part of the manual provides consultants with specific guidelines for each step. Finally, recommendations for making policy related to ways to invigorate teaching consulting was suggested. It is expected that specific examples and cases of subject-specific teaching consulting presented in this research will be used to narrow the gap between theory and practice of teaching consulting, and to help math, science and English teachers develop teaching professionalism.
