The permafrost active layer plays an important role in permafrost dynamics. Ecological patterns, processes, and water and ice contents in the active layer are spatially and temporally complex depending on landscape heterogeneity and local-scale variations in hydrological processes. Although there has been emerging interest in the application of optical remote sensing techniques to permafrost environments, optical sensors are significantly limited in accessing information on near surface geo-cryological conditions. The primary objective of this study was to investigate capability of L-band SAR data for monitoring spatio-temporal variability of permafrost ecosystems and underlying soil conditions. This study exploits information from different polarimetric SAR observables in relation to permafrost environmental conditions. Experimental results show that each polarimetric radar observable conveys different information on permafrost environments. In the case of the dual-pol mode, the radar observables consist of two backscattering powers and one correlation coefficient between polarimetric channels. Among them, the dual-pol scattering powers are highly sensitive to freeze/thaw transition and can discriminate grasslands or ponds in thermokarst area from other permafrost ecosystems. However, it is difficult to identify the ground conditions with dual-pol observables. Additional backscattering powers and correlation coefficients obtained from quad-pol mode help understanding seasonal variations ofradar scattering and assessing geo-cryological information on soil layers. In particular, co-pol coherences atHV-basis and circular-basis were found to be very usefultools for mapping and monitoring near surface soil properties.

Quad band p-HEMT SP6T switch for handset applications was developed. To achieve the low insertion loss and high isolation, trade-off between "On" state and "Off" state was considered by optimization of unit cell. Especially, in case isolation between transmit port and receive port, it was achieved by large capacitors and miniaturization of chip size was achieved by common voltage control and ground using back via process. Designed SP6T switch has size of $950um{\times}100um$ and take into consideration the gate recess error, excellent loss and isolation was confirmed in operating frequency.

In high speed railway bridges, dynamic analysis is important because of high passing velocity and moving load at the regular intervals, and damping ratio is a major parameter to predict dynamic responses. In this paper, damping ratios were estimated by using half power band width method and extended Kalman filter according to acceleration signal conditions, and a relationship between estimated damping ratios and representative values of bridge vibration was derived. From the results, damping ratios estimated from total ambient vibration were more reliable than only free vibration part. In case of using extended Kalman filter, the estimated damping ratios varying with RMQ(root mean quad), as one of representative values of bridge vibration, have more feasible trend. Thus, it is shown that further studies on reliabilities of estimated damping ratios are needed.
This study aims to evaluate the usability of polarimetric SAR measurements for discriminating water-covered area from other land cover types and to propose polarimetric parameters showing the better response to the flood. Flood-related changes in the polarimetric parameters were studied using the L-band PALSAR-2 quad-pol mode data acquired before and after the severe flood events occurred in Joso city, Japan. The experimental results showed that, among various polarimetric parameters, the HH-polarization intensity, the Shannon entropy, and the surfaces scattering component of model-based decomposition were found to be useful to discriminate water-covered areas from other land cover types. Particularly, an unsupervised change detection with the Shannon entropy provides the best result for an automated mapping of flood extents.

In this paper, a digital watermarking method using the WPT (Wavelet Packet Transform) is proposed. The proposed algorithm transforms the input image by using the WPT and inserts the watermark by using the quad-tree algorithm and Cox's algorithm. The experiments for evaluating the performances of the proposed algorithm is carried out by inserting a watermark in each wavelet packet transform step and by inserting a watermark into the lowest frequency domain (LL). As a simulation result, the performance of the insertion of the watermark into the 6 levels of WPT is better than that of other cases. In addition, about $30{\sim}60%$ of all watermarks are inserted into the LL band, the correlation value is improved though the PSNR performance decreases $1{\sim}2dB$.

In the communication, a reconfigurable antenna using two PIN diodes is presented for quad-band(GSM900/GSM1800/GSM1900/UMTS) mobile handset applications. The proposed antenna has a size $45{\times}11{\times}6mm^3$. By independently adjusting the on/off states of two PIN diodes located on the radiating element, the proposed structure can be operated in the PIFA and loop mode, respectively. The PIN diodes are replaced by conducting tape in order to verify the concept. In regards to the fabricated reconfigurable antenna, when operating in the PIFA mode, the measured results show that the 7 dB bandwidth is 8.62 %. which covers the GSM900(880~960 MHz) band. When operating in the loop mode, the measured results show that the 7 dB bandwidth is 26.36 %, which covers the GSM1800(1,710~1,880 MHz), GSM1900(1,850~1,990 MHz), and UMTS(1,920~2,170 MHz) bands, respectively.

In this paper, the quad-band antenna for mobile handsets is proposed and developed. The operating frequency bands include GSM(880 MHz${\~}$960 MHz), GPS(1,575 MHz$\pm$10 MHz), DCS(1,710 MHz${\~}$l,880MHz), and PCS(1,850 MHz${\~}$l,990 MHz). The proposed antenna consists of a feed line, a shorting post, and a radiating element of the feed loop. The multi-band operation is achieved by using the fundamental and higher resonant modes of the radiating element. Based on analysis of the current distribution on the radiator, the resonant frequency of each mode can be adjusted by adding the different sizes of slots on the radiator. The radiator of the feed loop is designed to be symmetrical so that the energy is symmetrically distributed on the radiator, which results in omni-directional radiation pattern. The ground plane under the radiator is removed in order to improve the bandwidth. The measured impedance bandwidths are $10.1\%$ in GSM band(VSWR<2.5), $26.8\%$ in GPS band, and DCS/US-PCS bands(VSWR<2.5), respectively. The maximum gains on the H-plane of the fabricated antenna are measured about -0.37 dBi${\~}$2.55 dBi for all operating frequency bands.

An ultra-compact and wideband low noise amplifier (LNA) in a quad flat non-leaded (QFN) package is presented. The LNA monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) is implemented in a $0.25{\mu}m$ GaN IC technology on a Silicon Carbide (SiC) substrate provided by Triquint. A source degeneration inductor and a gate inductor are used to obtain the noise and input matching simultaneously. The resistive feedback and inductor peaking techniques are employed to achieve a wideband characteristic. The LNA chip is mounted in the $3{\times}3-mm^2$ QFN package and measured. The supply voltages for the first and second stages are 14 V and 7 V, respectively, and the total current is 70 mA. The highest gain is 13.5 dB around the mid-band, and -3 dB frequencies are observed at 0.7 and 12 GHz. Input and output return losses ($S_{11}$ and $S_{22}$) of less than -10 dB measure from 1 to 12 GHz; there is an absolute bandwidth of 11 GHz and a fractional bandwidth of 169%. Across the bandwidth, the noise figures (NFs) are between 3 and 5 dB, while the output-referred third-order intercept points (OIP3s) are between 26 and 28 dBm. The overall chip size with all bonding pads is $1.1{\times}0.9mm^2$. To the best of our knowledge, this LNA shows the best figure-of-merit (FoM) compared with other published GaN LNAs with the same gate length.

In this paper, a quad-band antenna for GSM/GPS/DCS/US-PCS handsets is proposed. The proposed antenna is low-profile for mounting in limited inner space of a handset. It consists of three open points with quarter wave length for multi-band operation. The ground plane below the patch is removed for wide-bandwidth without the variation of antenna size and the slot is added at the center of the patch for convenient matching in high frequency band. It provides a enough bandwidth within VSWR 3:1 at all bands. In addition, the measured peak gains are between -2.19 and 2.09 in anechoic chamber (10m$\times$6m$\times$4m).
The main objective of this study is to analyse the polarimetric characteristics of the various terrain targets by ground-based polarimetric SAR system and to confirm the compatible and effective polarimetric analysis method to reveal the polarization properties of different terrain targets by the GB-SAR. The fully polarimetric GB-SAR data with HH, HV, VH, and VV components were focused using the Deramp-FFT (DF) algorithm. The focused GB-SAR images were processed by the H/A/$\alpha$ polarimetric decomposition and the combined H/$\alpha$ or H/A/$\alpha$ and Wishart classification method. The segmented image and distribution graphs in H/$\alpha$ plane using Cloude and Pottier's method showed a reliable result that this quad-polarization GB-SAR data could be useful to classified corresponding scattering mechanism. The H/$\alpha$-Wishart and H/A/$\alpha$-Wishart classification results showed that a natural media and an artificial target were discriminated by the combined classification, in particular, after applying multi-looking and the Lee refined speckle filter.
