The purpose of this study Is to identify factors for library space programs through user needs assessments in order to apply a library construction. Research method used was a questionnaire and subjects were residents and library users lived in Yongin where a new library was constructing. The results show that library use behavior, age, and user companions are identified as factors to influence to both functional space ratio and functional space arrangement. Heading in libraries is major activity and many subjects went to library with family so that family space is needed. Space for variable ages, also, is needed because of different needs based upon ages.

The major purpose of this study is to scrutinize and analyze various factors in numerous aspects of two different library systems for the visually handicapped, namely braille library and a special section for the visually handicapped in the public library system. The analyses may provide theoretical and conceptual framework on which strategies to enhance services for the visually handicapped is to be developed. More specifically, this study seeks (1) to examine a linkage between the degree of maintenance of staffs, collections, and equipment and the level of satisfactions of librarians and (2) to come up with more effective mechanisms of welfare services for the visually handicapped in each library system. This research is qualitative-descriptive and uses interview method. Fourteen libraries throughout the nation (4 public libraries with a reading room for the visually handicapped and 8 braille libraries) which had been in operation more than one year were selected as subjects for the research. Findings and results of the analyses are summarized as follows : 1. There seems to be general consensus that each of public and braille library has significant but, to a certain extent, different roles to play in order to enhance library services for the visually handicapped. Recruitment of qualified librarians, increase of the volume of collection, and enlargement of reading room space are noted as immediate concerns for the former. For the latter, it was suggested that increase of the number of staff for publishing, securing more equipments for pulication in braille, and wider scope as well as more variety of publications are the pressing problems at hand. 2. Both public and braille library employ one librarian for the visually handicapped who is required to have educational background in library science and special education. In addition, one must have competence in reading braille types. 3. Majority of reading rooms in those libraries is so small in physical aspect that size and number of seats are 66m2 and 15 seats respectively because circulation services are mainly in use due to the problem of inaccessibility which is commonly suffered by the visually handicapped. 4. Library services for the visually handicapped are heavily concentrated upon the large urban area. In fact, most of braille libraries are located in Seoul whereas a reading room for the visually handicapped in the public library system are exclusively placed in the large cities such as Inchon, Taejon, and Taegu. 5. All of the public library is neither equipped with necessary facilities to publish in braille nor secured supporting instruments which may facilitate library use for the visually handicapped. On the contrary, most of braille libraries are equipped with arrangements to publish in braille despite supporting devices are gererally lacking. 6. Consequently, provision of services In the public library is largely confined to reading and circulation of materials purchased from braille libraries while major task of braille libraries centers around publication and distributions of the reading materials in braille.

This study reports a field study that examined the citizens' needs and perceptions of library services at a municipal public library system of Mapo-gu, in an attempt to develop a comprehensive service plan that can satisfy the diverse public needs in the changing social environment. We administered a self-reported questionnaire to 800 library users and 300 non-users in the area to examine their reading habits, library use, and perceptions of library services and programs. As a result of the analysis, 53.7% of Mapo-gu residents used one or two libraries among all 16 municipal libraries, and the primary criterion for selecting the main library was accessibility(63.9%). And only 53.8% of library users had experience participating in the library programs. The respondents also showed strong perception that the library is an essential place for the community and the children. Study results indicate that the library system should further expand the collection size, diversify information contents, improve the physical space including library facilities, and build more libraries. In order to fulfill the role of public libraries as the central place of the community, the municipal city should further invest in enhancing accessibility, spatial innovation, and diversifying service contents and media.

This study aims to identify and analyze the Twitter use of domestic public libraries. In order to identify the detailed patterns of Twitter use in library and information services, a content analysis was conducted for the 3,038 tweet data from the top 14 public libraries' accounts on Twitter use. Inductive approach was adopted to develop a coding scheme and open coding was conducted with the entire tweet. Additionally, correspondence analysis was conducted for the result of content analysis to identify how library accounts correspond to specific types. As a result, 3 main categories and 9 sub-categories of public libraries' Twitter use were developed. And the 37 detailed patterns of public libraries' use of Twitter were identified. The identified patterns can provide the libraries interested in Twitter use with guidelines.

The purpose of this research is to survey the current status of CD-ROM acquisitions and use at public libraries. For this purpose, the questionnaires prepared to examine the information environments, CD-ROM acquisitions and use as well as the future plans for CD-ROM use were sent to seven public libraries in Daegu. This paper consists of the introduction, the characteristics and trends of CD-ROM publications, the present status of CD-ROM publishing in Korea, and the analyses of acquisitions and use of CD-ROMs at public libraries. It is intended to find out if there is any relationship between CD-ROM publishing and CD-ROM use at public libraries. It concludes that the CD-ROM collections of public libraries are related to the publishing of CD-ROM, but the use of CD-ROMs cannot be claimed to reflect the publishing. Some interpretations and recommendations for the results are suggested.

This study aims is users ensuring in public libraries and ma-eul libraries in Chang-Won city. For this purpose, This is survived about regional inhabitants and regional community. (Chang-won library, Chang-won city library, Sapa Dong-sung ma-eul library and Bong-gok ma-eul library). The ways of Users ensuring are as follows. 1. It can be formed village common lives through ma-eul library. 2. Fundamental libraries must establish in Chang-won city, and library materials must be common use. For this, All libraries must link regional information network. 3. For the strategy of ensuring the 'core-users', it is suggested from the community and inhabitants study.

The Result of the study can be summarized as follows : (1) Korean culture and public library look extremely wasted equally. Judging from this fact, I believe that it is impossible for public library can contribute to development of Korean culture. (2) But, public library can contribute to development of culture in the cultural environment that mental desire is prior to physical wants. This cultural environment can be built up with reading of good books. Therefore, if class to reading education and diverse reading education programs can be activated in a large portion of the nationwide public libraries and the majority of a local resident are capable of improving their creativity power, thinking power and imaginative faculty, public library can contribute to produce such cultural circumstances. (3) Quality, culture, a human and mind receive mu6 respect in Korean Society as advanced civil, democratic and industrial society in the future. The Society will be influenced by reason and rational culture will be suitable to this society. Creativity power, thinking-power, imaginative faculty, intelligence and power of information management are demanded to the greatest degree for the development of idea and new technology in the society under the control of rational culture. So, lifelong education with library use is the most fruitful and inexpensive way for the improvement of these powers.

The aim of this study is to propose a development plan of public library OPAC interface. For this purpose, the study analyzed cases of OPAC interface of domestic and overseas public libraries, and took a questionnaire survey on use types, level of functional demand and improvement matters of OPAC in order to examine the user requirements on OPAC interface. Public library OPAC interface must comply with interface design principle and reflect requirements of users. Accordingly, it must supply foundation to realize various OPAC functions by inputting perfect bibliographic records on resources. The research result could be used as basic resources for the public library OPAC interface design.

We investigated the user behavior of the theme display provided by the public libraries as an active information service. Specifically, we wanted to study the library patrons' library use behavior and perception. There were in-depth interviews with seven librarians and eight patrons to develop a set of research questions and the questionnaire. We conducted the survey with 232 patrons then the statistical analysis. The analysis result revealed that the theme display helped the patrons' wider use of the library resources and also positively affected patrons' perception on the librarians as well as the evaluation of the library services. Based on the findings, we recommended the active incorporation of the theme display within the limitation of the libraries' facility and patrons' interests.

It is widely known that the public library in Korea has not been developed as a social agency which makes communication process possible. The public library in Korea just plays a role of the public study room for students using their own books. There is almost no public libraries in the sense of an open collection of comprehensive materials designed for use by anyone who seeks information. This study starts from this situation. It aims at identifying the present stage of the development of public libraries in Korea through investigating librarians' consciousness in their everyday lives. For this, a case study method is used for investingating, collecting and organizing the 'discourse' of librarians in Pusan and Kyongsangnamdo area. Major suggestions include : First of all, it is most important for public library reformation to eradicate the 'conservatism' in the consciousness of librarians in their everyday lives. So, it is essential to collect their life stories in various library conditions, and make them public discourse of librarians. Secondly, the professional organization should play a role to unify the librarians. For this role, it should maintain a R&D department and strengthen PR programs. Thirdly, Researchers who study Library and Information Science in Korea should be always concerned with the real-life context in the field. The most important type of research in our third world situation is the one that is based on the present stage of the development of our own libraries and the real library situation in the field.
