  • To report problems found in a patient who has implemented stent implantation and then conducted a perfusion MRI using ASL(Arterial Spin Labeling), in order to suggest a solution to them. The perfusion MRI was conducted, using pCASL among ASL methods. Data from pCASL(Pseudo Continuous Arterial Spin Labeling) was acquired together with the structural image simply by changing position(labeling gap 15 mm, 170 mm) of the labeling pulse to avoid stent. Data was processed through the ASLtbx. When perfusion MRI was acquired using pCASL, it showed that the position of the conventional labeling pulse (labeling gap 24 mm) was overlapped with that of stent, which made signal intensity in right brain tissue appear as if it were void. When the labeling pulse was positioned (labeling gap 15 mm) to avoid stent, high signal intensity images were acquired. In labeling pulse (labeling gap 170 mm), the signal intensity was more reduced due to relaxation before labeled blood arrived at the imaging slice. pCASL can be stably repeated measurements because it does not use a contrast agent. And it should be selected with the appropriate image acquisition parameters for the high quality image.

  • Reductive degradation of hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) by nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) was investigated to evaluate the feasibility of using it for in-situ groundwater remediation. Batch experiments were conducted to quantify the kinetics and efficiency of RDX removal by nZVI, and to determine the effects of pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), and ionic strength on this process. Experimental results showed that the reduction of RDX by nZVI followed pseudo-first order kinetics with the observed rate constant (kobs) in the range of 0.0056-0.0192 min−1. Column tests were conducted to quantify the removal of RDX by nZVI under real groundwater conditions and evaluate the potential efficacy of nZVI for this purpose in real conditions. In column experiment, RDX removal capacity of nZVI was determined to be 82,500 mg/kg nZVI. pH, oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), and DO concentration varied significantly during the column experiments; the occurrence of these changes suggests that monitoring these quantities may be useful in evaluation of the reactivity of nZVI, because the most critical mechanisms for RDX removal are based on the chemical reduction reactions. These results revealed that nZVI can significantly degrade RDX and that use of nZVI could be an effective method for in-situ remediation of RDX-contaminated groundwater.

  • The acid-catalyzed hydrolysis reaction of poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) in water/acetic acid solution at $35^{circ}C$ was studied at two different solvent compositions. The mole fractions of vinyl acetate (Vac) and vinyl alcohol (VA) during the course of the reaction were determined by NMR, and the equilibrium constant $K_{eq}$ of the reaction was determined using the molar ratio of VAc to VA at the chemical equilibrium. $K_{eq}$ was 0.75 (${\pm}0.01$) when the VAc mole faction at the equilibrium was 0.78 (${\pm}0.01$) and it was 0.69 (${\pm}0.01$) when the VAc mole fraction was 0.57 (${\pm}$0.02). The reaction was found to be a pseudo 1-st order reaction with the rate coefficient at $3.4{\times}10^{-6}/sec$.

  • In order to assess the survival success of microphytoplankton species in ship ballast water, we examined microphytoplankton diversity from international commercial ships berthed at Ulsan and Pyeongtaek Ports, Korea, and also subjected them to laboratory studies. The ages of ballast water in each ship ranged from 1 to 365 days. Vessels originated from coastal China (Weihai, Lianyunsang and Shanghai), Chile, and from the Yellow and Pacific Oceans. The numbers of species and phytoplankton standing crops in uploaded ballast water were significantly related to the age of ballast water. The most diverse taxonomic group was diatoms. In the laboratory study, the value of in vivo fluorescence in M/V Spring Lyra gradually increased with increasing nutrients such as nitrate and phosphate. Phytoplankton in new (9 days), medium (31 days) and old (365 days) ballast water successfully survived under typical nutrient condition of port water and F/2 medium at $15^{\circ}C$ and $20^{\circ}C$, whereas phytoplankton in ballast water treatment did not survive, regardless of optimal temperature. Colonization process was dominated by diatoms; Skeletonema coastatum for M/V Spring Lyra, Thalassiosira pseudonana and Thalassiosira for M/V Han Yang, Thalassiosira pacifica and Odontella aurita for M/V Modern Express, and Chaetoceros pseudocurvisetus and Pseudo-nitzschia seriata for M/V Asian Legend. The successful establishment of non-native species was also related to nutrient richness. Our laboratory design can be applied as a practical tool to assess the survivability of invasive microphytoplankton introduced into local waters of Ulsan and Pyeongtaek.

  • Temporal variation of the natural planktonic community in the Southern Sea of Korea was investigated by using low floating enclosed bags (3.2m deep and 2,500 liter) in order to understand the effect of enriched nitrate on the planktonic community in the spring (March-April) of 2002. Prior to beginning the incubation, the bags were placed in two different concentrations of nitrate, which consisted of control (ambient water) and experimental mesocosms (final concentration of $12{\mu}M$). The nitrate concentration in the experimental mesocosms remained significantly higher than those in control mesocosms throughout the study period (ANOYA, p<0.001). Following the addition of nitrate, abundance and chi-a concentration of phytoplankton peaked on Day 1, when diatoms established the peak in the experimental mesocosms. Diatoms consisted mainly of Thalasxiosira decipiens, Pseudo-nitzschia pungem, Leptocylindrus danicu, Thalassionema nitzschioides, Chaetoceros pseudocrinitus and Actinoptychus senariu. However, the peak did not lead to the difference in abundance and composition of phytoplankton between control and experimental mesocosms during the study period. The dinoflagellates began to increase soon after the diatoms decreased in all mesocosms. Copepods, as a dominant group in the rnosozooplankton community, showed no immediate peak in relation to the nitrate addition, but only their own developmental process from the eggs to adult stage during the study period. The bottom-up control from enriched nitrate via phytoplankton to adult copepods was not distinguished in terms of the abundance of the planktonic community. This might stem from the relatively low nitrate availability of phytoplankton at no N-limited seawater and the weak coupling between rapidly sunken diatoms and copepods through the water column.

  • Electron beam-induced grafting polymerization was employed to prepare Acrylic acid-grafted bacterial cellulose (BC-g-AAc). BC-g-AAc as an adsorbent was applied to remove heavy metals (e.g., As, Pb, and Cd). This study examined followings; morphological change of surface, adsorptive behavior of BC-g-AAc, and interpretation of adsorptive kinetics. Specific surface areas of BC and BC-g-AAc were $0.9527m^2g^{-1}$ for BC and $0.2272m^2g^{-1}$ for BC-g-AAc, respectively as measured by BET nitrogen adsorption, revealing the morphological change of the surface of BC-g-AAc. Batch adsorption test was performed to investigate adsorptive behavior of BC-g-AAc in aqueous solution. The amounts of Pb and Cd adsorbed on BC-g-AAc were $69mg\;g^{-1}$ and $56mg\;g^{-1}$, respectively. However, As was not adsorbed on BC-g-AAc due to its neutral nature. Both the Benaissa model and the Kurniawan model were applied in the study to interpret adsorptive kinetics. From the value of correction coefficient ($R^2$), adsorptive kinetics of Pb and Cd were subjected to Kurniawan model referred to pseudo-second-order. Taken together, the results of this study show that BC-g-AAc has potential as a heavy metal (eg., Pb, Cd)-adsorbent made of an environmentally friendly material.

  • In order to design nano structured materials with enhanced thermoelectric properties, the alloys in the pseudo-binary $Bi_2Te_3$-PbTe system are investigated for their micro structure properties. For this synthesis, the liquid alloys are cooled by the water quenching method. Micro structure images are obtained by using an electron probe micro analyzer(EPMA). Dendritic and lamellar structures are clearly observed with the variation in the composition ratio between $Bi_2Te_3$ and PbTe. The increase in the $Bi_2Te_3$ composition ratio causes to change of the structure from dendritic to lamellar. The Seebeck coefficient of sample 5, in which the mixture rate of $Bi_2Te_3$ is 83%, is measured as the highest value. In contrast, the others decrease with the increase of the $Bi_2Te_3$ composition ratio. Meanwhile, p-type characteristics are observed in sample 6, at 91%-$Bi_2Te_3$ mixture rate. The power factors of the all samples are calculated with the Seebeck coefficient and resistivity.

  • The adsorption features of $Ni^{2+}$ onto spent alkaline manganese batteries powder have been investigated with the adsorbent dose, initial concentration of adsorbate and temperature as the experimental variables. The adsorption reaction of $Ni^{2+}$ ion followed the pseudo-second order rate model, and the adsorption rate constants($k_2$) decreased with increasing initial concentration of nickel ion. The equilibrium adsorption data were fitted to the Langmuir and Freundlich models. The Freundlich model represents the equilibrium data better than the Langmuir model in this initial adsorbate concentration range. As the temperature increased, the adsorbed amount of nickel ion at equilibrium was also increased, which indicated that the adsorption reaction was endothermic. Based on the experimental results obtained along with temperatures, thermodynamic parameters such as ${\Delta}H^{\circ},\;{\Delta}G^{\circ},\;and\;{\Delta}S^{\circ}$ were calculated.

  • The succinic semialdehyde dehydrogenase from bovine brain was inactivated by treatment with phenylglyoxal, a reagent that specifically modifies arginine residues. The inhibition at various phenylglyoxal concentrations shows pseudo-first-order kinetics with an apparent secondorder rate constant of 30 $M^{-1}min^{-1}$ for inactivation. Partial protection against inactivation was provided by the coenzyme $NAD^+$, but not by the substrate succinic semialdehyde. Spectrophotometric studies indicated that complete inactivation of the enzyme resulted from the binding of 2 mol phenylglyoxal per mol of enzyme. These results suggest that essential arginine residues, located at or near the coenzyme-binding site, are connected with the catalytic activity of brain succinic semialdehyde dehydrogenase.

  • In order to investigate the structural defects of a cylindrical-type toluene storage tank, we carried out the acoustic emissions. The storage tank was manufactured with high strength steel in 1978 and its's first and second courses from bottom were entirely repaired, recently. Acoustic emissions were monitored with real time according to load sequences in the $75{\~}84\%$ level range of maximum allowable load. Our results show a non-genuine acoustic emissions as well as a genuine characteristics. The pseudo emissions considered as valve noises were transiently occurred on shut-off processes of inlet valve regardless of water loading. The acoustic emission events occurred during water filling phase were estimated due to defects, and in the $75{\~}84\%$ test load level no evidences of defect growth were observed. Those defects were ascertained as weld cracks and porosities through the post radiography testing conducted near active sensors.
