  • The present article showcases a temperature dependent cohesive zone model (CZM)-based fi nite element simulation of drop weight tear test (DWTT), to analyse fracture behavior of pipeline steel (PS) at different temperatures. By co-relating the key CZM parameters with known mechanical properties of PS at varying temperature, a temperature dependent CZM for PS is proposed. A modified form of Johnson and Cook model has been used for the true stress-strain behavior of PS. The numerical model, using Abaqus/CAE 6.13, has been validated by comparing the predicted results with load-displacement curves obtained from test data. During steady-state crack propagation, toughness parameters (such as CTOA and CTOD) were found to remain fairly constant at a given temperature. These toughness parameters, however, show an exponential increase with increase in temperature. The present paper offers a plausible approach to numerically analyze fracture behavior of PS at varying temperature using a temperature dependent CZM.

  • Two ring-type conductance meters were manufactured to measure void fraction and its propagation speed in slug flow. The signal of conductance meter with two rings depends on liquid temperature. Therefore a conductance meter with separated probe designed by Coney (1973), which is independent of liquid temperature, was used and experimentally proved. The manufactured conductance meters showed a good repeatability and agreement with the analytical solution by Coney (1973). From time lag between two conductance meter, we could calculate the propagation speed of void fraction.

  • Normal zone propagation(NZP) characteristics were investigated on Ag sheathed Bi-2223 tape and cylindrical stacked conductor. Normal zone propagation(N2P) experiments with tape were conducted with refrigerator in temperature from 45 K to 77 K, 0 T. Cylindrical stacked conductor was molding with epoxy and experiments were conducted with adiabatic condition in $LN_2$. NZP velocities of tape with two condition of DC and AC were almost same at each temperature. NZP velocities of cylindrical stacked conductor were 1.9-2.4 cdsec in $LN_2$. Numerical analysis was carried out by a one-dimensional heat balance equation. As a result, simulated results of NZP velocity with Bi-2223 tape were similar to experimental results in DC.

  • Owing to the discover of oxide superconducting over critical temperature100K, it is being made experimentally somewhere under the possibility that there is superconducting magnet by cooling liquid nitrogen. The issues of thermal stability and quench process of Low-Tc superconductor has been studied and used application of oxide superconducting magnets. However the quench propagation property of oxide superconductor, especially experimental data about thermal behavior has not been reported yet. Therefore we measured the effect of temperature dependance of quench propagation velocity, Vq, by using the short samples made up of silver sheathed Bismuth-family (2223phase) superconducting oxide tape.

  • The lift-off characteristics of the triple flame have been studied experimentally with various mean velocities and concentration gradients using a multi-slot burner, which can control the concentration gradient and the mean velocity independently, Lift-off height, axial maximum velocity, flame temperature, and some other characteristics were examined for methane and propane flame, It was found that minimum values of the lift-off heights exist at a certain concentration gradient for constant mean velocity, and this result implies that the propagation velocity has a maximum value at this condition, OH radical distribution was measured with LIF method and velocity variation along streamline was measured with PlV system. In addition maximum temperature along streamline was measured with CARS system. The intensity of the diffusion flame affects on the propagation velocity of triple flame in the region of very weak concentration gradient.

  • This research is devoted to the study of plane wave propagation in homogeneous transversely isotropic (HTI) magneto-thermoelastic rotating medium with combined effect of Hall current and two temperature due to multi-dual-phase lag heat transfer. It is analysed that, for 2-D assumed model, three types of coupled longitudinal waves (quasi-longitudinal, quasi-transverse and quasi-thermal) are present. The wave characteristics like phase velocity, specific loss, attenuation coefficients, energy ratios, penetration depths and amplitude ratios of transmitted and reflected waves are computed numerically and illustrated graphically and compared for different theories of thermoelasticity. Some particular cases are also derived from this research.

  • Propagation characteristics of tribrachial flames have been studied numerically in a two-dimensional fuel/oxidizer mixing layer. A flame is initiated by imposing a high temperature ignition source. Subsequent propagation of a tribrachial flame is traced. The flow redirection effect at the leading edge of a tribrachial flame increases the propagation speed beyond the corresponding stoichiometric laminar burning velocity. The effect of mixture fraction gradient on the propagation speed of a tribrachial flame is analyzed in a mixing layer considering that mixture fraction gradient increases as a tribrachial flame propagates toward upstream. As the flame curvature at the leading edge increases with decreasing mixture fraction gradient, the flow redirection effect becomes more pronounced on the flame propagation speed. As a result, the propagation speed of a tribrachial flame increases with decreasing mixture fraction gradient.

  • In this paper, the propagation characteristics due to the horizontal water temperature variations in the sea such as thermal fronts is analyzed by the ray theory. Two models for the temperature anomaly layer are chosen. One is a plane type and the other is a cylindrical type. In the plane type, the temperature increases linearly from a isothermal region to 5km with the gradient of about $2^{\circ}C.$/km, and decreases with the same gradient in next 5km. In the cylindrical type, water temperature increases only with the same gradient from a half cylindrical thermal boundary surface. The result showed that the gradient of acoustic rays decreases in the temperature increasing region and vice versa in temperature decreasing region. And, the transmission loss due to the temperature variation was less than O.2dB in the plane type model as well as in the cylindrical one.

  • The main issues for the power application of high Tc superconducting tape are lower AC loss and higher stability conditions. HTS tape has large stability margin by high heat capacity of superconductor itself and high temperature margin. But, it can be damaged by continuous heat generation at quench point, because normal zone propagation velocity by generating heat is very low. Here, we analyze the quench propagation characteristics using finite element method for BSCCO-2223 HTS tape.

  • The present study has been conducted to investigate the reaction kinetics and pyrolysis parameters for flame propagation analysis of furniture material components. TGA measurement for component materials such as MDF (medium density fiberboad) panel including coating material, synthetic leather and foam cushion are performed under maximum temperature of $600^{\circ}C$ and heating rate of $10^{\circ}C/min$. The results of TGA have shown that the peak temperature of MDF panel was $324^{\circ}C$ and the initial peak temperature of coating material decreased by $270{\sim}280^{\circ}C$. In the case of synthetic leather and foam materials, the reference temperature and reference rate depend on the type of polymer consisting the sample, the initial kinetic characteristics was classified into 2 categories of about $270^{\circ}C$ and $420^{\circ}C$ of reference temperature for the tested synthetic materials. The present study showed the pyrolysis parameters of reference temperature and reference rate proposed by Lyon to evaluate the pre-exponential factor and activation energy. The present study can contribute to improve the reliability of computational fire analysis and enhance the understanding of fire propagation phenomena based on the thermal properties study of material.
