Purpose: This study was performed to investigate the perceived relationship among professional self-concept, head nurse's leadership, and nursing clinical competency by clinical nurses. Methods: This study was a cross-sectional survey. Participants were 601 nurses working at the five general hospitals in four provincial cities, Gyeungbuk, Korea. Data were collected from July 14, 2010 to August 31 and analyzed by SPSS/PC ver 18.0 programs. Results: Professional self-concept and head nurse's leadership were slightly above the middle average, but nursing clinical competency was good. According to participants' age, marital status, job satisfaction, and length of service, there were perceptional differences in professional self-concept, head nurse's leadership, and nursing clinical competency. Nursing clinical competency could be explained by head nurse's leadership, professional self-concept, job satisfaction and length of service. Head nurse's leadership was independent variable affecting nursing clinical competency, professional self-concept was partial mediating variable, and job satisfaction and length of service were extraneous variables. Conclusion: It is concluded that head nurse's leadership is more important than professional self-concept to improve nursing clinical competency. Nursing managers should plan various strategies to improve head nurse's leadership and professional self-concept, to increase clinical nurses' job satisfaction and length of service.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between professional self-concept, nursing performance and retention intention of emergency department (ER) nurse. Methods: Data were collected from a convenience sample of 200 ER nurses who worked in one of 9 hospitals in 2cities. The instrument for this study was a structured questionnaire on professional self-concept, nursing performance and retention intention. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple regression. Results: The mean score for professional self-concept was 2.52 (0.27), for nursing performance was 2.70(0.31), and for retention intention, 4.87 (1.48). There were significant differences on three variables length of ER career, average income, and satisfaction with nursing. There was a significant positive correlation between professional self-concept and nursing performance, and retention intention. Professional self-concept was the most significant predictor variable. Conclusion: The results suggest that the improvement of ER nurses' professional self-concept will improve their nursing performance and retention intention. Therefore, it is necessary to develop strategies which strengthens professional self-concept in order to improve ER nurses' performance and retention intention.
Purpose : The purpose of this study was to identify factors influencing the professional self-concept of nurses working in intensive care units (ICUs). Methods : Data were collected from July 1 to August 15, 2014. The subjects were 206 ICU nurses working in four university hospitals in B and U cities, Korea. Their professional self-concept was measured using Arthur's Scale revised by Yoon (2012), and professional quality of life (QOL) was measured using Pro QOL Korean Ver. 5 developed by Stamm (2010). Data were analyzed with SPSS Ver. 18, using a t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis. Results : Professional self-concept was significantly correlated with compassion satisfaction (r=.61, p<.001), and burn out (r=-.57, p<.001). The factors influencing professional self-concept were compassion satisfaction (${\beta}=.46$, p<.001), burn out (${\beta}=-.27$, p<.001), and education level (${\beta}=.14$, p =.014). The explanatory power of this model was 46.5%. Conclusion : The results suggest that the influencing factors found in this study should be considered when planning nursing intervention programs for improving the professional self-concept of ICU nurses.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify the relationship between professional self-concept and job satisfaction of nurses working in long-term care hospitals and to consider strategies to improve these factors. Methods: Data were collected using structured questionnaires given to 135 nurses working at six long-term care hospitals in C City. The data were analyzed with SPSS 23.0 by descriptive statistics, Cronbach's α, t-test, one-way ANOVA, a Scheffé test, and with Pearson's correlation coefficient. Results: The average score for professional self-concept was 2.78 points (out of 4 points), and the average score for job satisfaction was 3.11 points (out of 5 points). Significant differences were found for professional self-concept according to age, marriage status, total work experience, number of patients per nurse, and position, while job satisfaction showed significant differences depending on age and the number of patients in the ward. Professional self-concept and job satisfaction showed a significant positive correlation (r=.46, p<.001). Conclusion: In long-term care hospitals, it is necessary to provide education programs about nursing practice, communication, and leadership to enhance the professional self-concept of nurses. With regard to job satisfaction for nurses, it is imperative to improve the work environment of long-term care hospitals.
Purpose: This study was conducted to determine the effects of self-leadership, professional self-concept, and positive psychological capital on the performance of operating room nurses. Methods: The participants were 148 operating room nurses with more than a year of experience in one of the general hospitals in Seoul, Korea. Data were collected from 18 to 29 November 2019 and were analyzed by descriptive statistic methods, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient analysis, and multiple regression analysis using the SPSS/WIN 21.0 program. Results: The self-leadership, professional self-concept, and positive psychological capital of operating room nurses showed a positive correlation with nursing performance. The performance of operating room nurses was the most affected by professional self-concept (β=.32, p=.002), followed by operating room career (β=.22, p=.037) and positive psychological capital (β=.20, p=.039), which together accounted for a nursing performance of up to 42.9% (F=12.06, p<.001). Conclusion: Based on these findings, it is necessary to develop education and intervention programs to enhance the operating room nurses' professional self-concept and positive psychological capital.

The subjects of this study are 133 nurses who have worked for more than three months at five general hospitals with more than 300 beds in S city. As a result of the study, nurses' retenstion was higher than those of under 25 years of age between 30 and 35(F=3.313, p=.039).The professional self-concept of hospital nurses has been identified as an influence factor of intent to serve. Professional self-concepts have been shown to be better with higher peer-care and consideration(r=.397, P=.004). The peer group caring interaction behavior can occur not only between colleagues but also between managers.
