This paper explores micro-contexts of transnational migration and decision-making process of foreign migrants in Korea with four types, that is, married immigrants, immigrant workers, professional immigrants, and foreign students, analyzing dates of questionaries and interviews. Some findings can be summarized as follows. First, married immigrants and immigrant workers show relative lower level of micro-environments than professional immigrants and foreign students. Secondly, immigrants workers fill closest in geographical contiguity among immigrants' types, while married immigrants recognize more different in cultural comparison than the former. Both immigrants workers and foreign students think living environments of Korea better than other types, but immigrants workers consider relatively higher the level of technology, while foreign students evaluate lower that of education in Korea than other types. Thirdly, married immigrants give a relatively low score to the easiness of immigration, while both immigrant workers and professional immigrants give a high score to the job environment of Korea. Finally, all types of immigrants show a high portion in a self-decision making for international migration, while professional immigrants have much more experiences on visiting other countries than other types, and both married immigrants and foreign students seem to have utilized their networks with family members who live abroad.

In recent years, international migration of professional workers is significantly increasing as globalization has been deepened more and more. South Korea is not an exception for this case. Immigration of professional workers have steadily increased since 2000 in Korea, and the number reached approximately to 50,000 in 2009. In addition, it is a major trend that immigrants of short-sojourn are decreasing and ones of long-sojourn increasing. Our research shows that foreign language instructor has the greatest number of foreign professional immigrants. The next is professional immigrants related to business-activities. There are considerably entertainers, but they have greatly decreased since 2003. Majority of foreign professional immigrants settle down in a few metropolises. Especially, they reside in Seoul Metropolitan Area and Southeast coastal region. Professional immigrants trend to do with Korean on the base of their offices rather than residental communities in terms of adaptation, and they do not have strong will to reside permanently in Korea. Moreover, they are located at a blind spot of Korean government's foreign immigrant policy, comparing to foreign workers and female marriage immigrants.
This study focused on the reality that the necessity to professionalize women marriage immigrants is increasing. The purpose of this study is to analyze the determinants of rural female marriage immigrants' entry into the specialized field. The factors are categorized into social and institutional factors. Based on the labor market segmentation theory, which finds the imbalance of the labor market in terms of institutional and structural factors, factors affecting rural female marriage immigrants entering managerial or professional occupations were set as social relation factors, cultural adaptation factors, and policy support experience factors. As a result of analysis, they are all found to have a statistically significant effect on rural female marriage immigrants entering managerial or professional occupations. The policy implications are that for rural immigrant women to grow into professionals, social relations and cultural learning capabilities, including language skills, need to be strengthened, as well as continued governmental support.

As the number of immigrants staying in Korea has gradually increased since the mid-1990s, the rate of chronicle migration from certain countries such as China and Vietnam remain high. Registered foreign residents have formed ethnic communities depending on their countries of origin, and the purpose of stay, Korean language literacy, rent, and accessibility have resulted in their self-congregation or forced segregation. This study aims to explore the direction in which immigrants' residential distribution move over time, and whether the ethnic communities show any differences in the level of congregation or segregation. It focuses on identifying the residential distribution of Korean-Chinese, Chinese, and Vietnamese at the city, county, and district level across the country in Korea and examining the congregation and residential changes of three groups over the past decade using centrographic method. Comparing the location as well as the level of residential congregation or dispersion of three groups, which account for the majority of non-professional immigrants in Korea, it will provide a basis for further research on residential congregation or segregation of immigrants in the future.
Purpose: This study was conducted in order to develop and test a measurement for assessment of stress of female marriage immigrants in Korea. Methods: Forty four preliminary items were initially developed based on literature review and focus group interviews. Those items were evaluated by experts for content validity, resulting in six factors and 26 items. The 26 items were translated into Chinese, Vietnamese, and English by professional translators and were reviewed by native speakers of each language who are fluent in Korean. For testing validity and reliability, data were collected from 323 female marriage immigrants residing in five regions in Korea. Results: As a result of item analysis, 25 items were selected. Factor analysis yielded 21 items in four factors, including 1) household economic 2) parenting and discrimination 3) cultural and 4) emotional stressors, explaining 61.3% of the total variance of stress of female marriage immigrants in Korea. The Cronbach's alpha reliability coefficient was .903 for the overall instrument and .692-.892 for four factors. Conclusion: Measurement of stress for female marriage immigrants in Korea has high validity and reliability. Therefore, this measurement may be utilized for systematic assessment of stress and for identification of areas of support for female marriage immigrants in Korea.
The purpose of this study was 1) to investigate professional sports fans' perception of immigrants and changes of athletes' nationalities, and 2) to examine how the fans' perception affected the perception of changes of athletes' nationalities. Results indicated that first the fan showed a neutral attitude toward the immigrants. In the results of the regression analysis containing foreign athletes naturalized as Korean citizens as the dependent variable, independent variables (i.e., gender and acceptance) explained 39.1% and 38% of the dependent variable, respectively, within [naturalization positive]. Within [naturalization negative] female fan and exclusive perception of immigrants positively predicted the objection to changes of athletes' nationalities. Lastly, in the results of the regression analysis containing Korean athletes who naturalized as foreign citizens as the dependent variable, fans who were older and rated higher on exclusive perception of immigrants had more negative perception of the dependent variable. Female fans perceived changes of athletes nationalities as personal choice.

With the recent increase in the number of foreign settlers in our country, we need a societal system which they can adapt well in. In order to successfully settle in our society, the marriage immigrants who especially plan a life in a new environment should be supported with support programs, especially to help them adapt to their very basic housing environment as their daily environment. From this research, through a program analysis of multi-cultural family support centre, the societal support helping to adapt to the residential environment for marriage immigrants in each nation was examined, and grasp an understanding on their adaptation to the housing environment by conducting interviews about housing environment adaptation examples. From the result of analyzing the 100 programs of the multi-cultural family support system, it could be seen that for the marriage immigrants to adapt, various programs are needed. In other words, there are effective programs for the early settlement of the marriage immigrants such as Korean education, tradition culture education, provision of district daily information, but it could be seen that heavier education was needed for, than for the sake of the marriage immigrants who took such education. Through adaptation case examples of 8 marriage immigrants from 5 different countries, it was realizable that the housing problems the marriage immigrants go through, are not limited to themselves, but also are related to the safety of their family and adaptation problems with their children. Therefore, by developing an adaptation program to help with housing environmental adaptation, the lives of the marriage immigrants' families will be supported, and will support early settlement, which then basic preparation for human resources as district societal use will be needed. By developing a program with a housing environmental professional, and if there is a positive effect and achievement, it is expected that there will be a standard program system available for all marriage immigrants.

Human resource theories of becoming entrepreneurs or self-employed rather than finding employment are compared as applied to fit the occupational data of technological entrepreneurs and technology jobs. The human capital theory posits that technological entrepreneurs are prepared to become a jack-of-all-trades with a variety of fields of education. Hobo theory of entrepreneurship assumes that entrepreneurs have strong taste against concentrating on a few activities, which tend to drive entrepreneurs away from employed jobs depressing their expected income. Another theory assumes that entrepreneurs have some unobserved productive qualities and abilities over employed people. Immigrant entrepreneurs could presumably be pressured out of employment under racial discrimination. Since technology jobs are mostly filled by those educated in the science and technology fields, and they presumably offer great reward to professional concentration, technological entrepreneurs may not benefit from becoming jacks-of-all-trades compared to finding employment in technological jobs income-wise. Asian immigrants in the 2000 US Census data are compared to white immigrants in technological jobs to test alternative human resource theories of entrepreneurship. Using English language ability as a proxy for the variety of education, I find in the white immigrant technological entrepreneurs support for the jack-of-all-trades theory, while in the Asian immigrant technological entrepreneurs hobo theory is supported. In the Asian technological workers only there appears the significant self-selection or comparative advantage component, while at the same time discriminatory components are significant.

In science and engineering programs in the U.S. in 2000 China, South Korea and India were top countries of origin sending students. More than half of the students intend to stay in the U.S. Immigration, education and occupational choices all have human capital aspects that require investments. A framework is proposed where expected incomes in both countries of origin and destination are calculated and used to reflect the substitution effect and the wealth effects of the expected incomes of two countries. It appears that nonpecuniary effects of education encourages immigration as much as pecuniary effects in the immigration decision equation. After the pecuniary effects are accounted for there is some negative nonpecuniary tendency of the professional scientists to immigrate to the U.S.
