  • The purpose of this study is to investigate how students' mathematical creativity changes through problem-solving instruction using problem-posing for elementary school students and to explore instructional methods to improve students' mathematical creativity in school curriculum. In this study, nonequivalent control group design was adopted, and the followings are main results. First, problem-solving lessons with problem-posing had a significant effect on students' mathematical creativity, and all three factors of mathematical creativity(fluency, flexibility, originality) were also significant. Second, the lessons showed meaningful results for all upper, middle, and lower groups of pupils according to the level of mathematical creativity. When analyzing the effects of sub-factors of mathematical creativity, there was no significant effect on fluency in the upper and middle groups. Based on the results, we suggest followings: First, there is a need for a systematic guidance plan that combines problem-solving and problem-posing, Second, a long-term lesson plan to help students cultivate novel mathematical problem-solving ability through insights. Third, research on teaching and learning methods that can improve mathematical creativity even for students with relatively high mathematical creativity is necessary. Lastly, various student-centered activities in math classes are important to enhance creativity.

  • This article investigated the effects of students' knowledge, beliefs, and attitudes about environment on environmental issue-based environmental problem solving in secondary school students. This article also investigated whether these factors are related to the environmental problem solving. Therefore, we first developed the test instruments to measure secondary school students' environmental knowledge, environmental beliefs, and environmental attitudes. Then, we developed the environmental issue-based teaching materials for secondary school students. The subjects participated in a environmental issue-based approach that consist of 3 lesson over an three weeks period. The results of this study presents that environmental knowledge and environmental beliefs are effective for the environmental problem solving in middle school environment class. First, secondary school students knew well ecological knowledge about environmental problem, and was entertaining most ecological beliefs. Second, secondary school students were having attitude which is most pro-environmental behaviors. Third, secondary school students are referring necessity of development partially about environment point at issue of country level. But, they were retaining situation of preservation about environment point at issue of area level. It's not easy to generalize these results because of many different variables, but the results suggests that teachers should make an effort to improve student's environmental problem solving ability applying environmental issue-based learning. And it's necessary to develop many kinds of environmental issues and teacher's instruction method to enrich problem solving ability in the process of environmental issue-based learning.

  • Metacognition is defined to be 'thinking about thinking' and 'knowing what we know and what we don't know'. It was verified that the metacognitive abilities of high school students can be improved via instruction. The purpose of this article is to investigate a new method for activating the metacognitive abilities that play a key role in the Mathematical Problem Solving Process(MPSP). Hyunsung participated in the MPSP using Visual Basic Programming. He actively participated in the MPSP. There are sufficient evidences about activating the metacognitive abilities via the activity processes and interviews. In solving mathematical problems, he had basic metacognitive abilities in the stage of understanding mathematical problems; through the experiments, he further developed his metacognitive abilities and successfully transferred them to general mathematical problem solving.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of higher grades in elementary the science process skill and scientific attitudes by creative problem solving. To verify research problem, the subject of this study were sixth-grade students selected from two classes of an elementary school located in Ulsan : the experimental group is composed of thirty-two students who were participated in Treffinger's CPS teaching model situation, and the other is composed of thirty-two students(control group) who were participated in teacher map based learning situation. During six weeks, the CPS teaming-based instruction was executed In th experimental group while the teacher map based instruction in controled group. Post-test showed following results: first, the experimental group showed a significant improvement in the science process skill compared th the control group. Second, the experimental group did not showed a significant improvement in the science process skill compared th the control group. In conclusion, Treffinger's CPS teaching model was more effective than the teacher map based teaching model on science process skill. However, since the study has a limit on an object of the study and the applied curriculum, the additional studies need to be conducted with an extended comparative group and curriculum.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of the Problem Centered Instruction(PCI) and the Explanatory Instruction(El). Two classes of third grade children(69 children) were sampled from an elementary school in Chung-Buk and given a treatment. The results of this study as follows: (1) There was no significant difference between the PCI group and the El group. This means that the PCI doesn't decrease the computational ability, even though the ordinary calculation methods are not taught in the PCI group. (2) The PCI group got scores significantly higher than the El group on application problems. It may be interpreted that the PCI is more effective than the El in problem solving.

  • Mathematics education is generally to cultivate mathematical thought. Most meaningful thought is to solve a certain given situation, that is, a problem. The aim of mathematies education could be identified with the cultivation of mathematical problem-solving ability. To cultivate mathematical problem-solving ability, it is necessary to study the nature of mathematical ability and its aspects pertaining to problem-solving ability. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relation between problem-solving ability and classficational viewpoint of mathematical verbal problems, and bet ween the detailed abilities of problem-solving procedure and classificational viewpoint of mathematical verbal problems. With the intention of doing this work, two tests were given to the third-year students of middle school, one is problem-solving test and the other classificational viewpoint test. The results of these two tests are follow ing. 1. The detailed abilities of problem-solving procedure are correlated with each other: such as ability of understanding, execution and looking-back. 2. From the viewpoint of structure and context, students classified mathematical verbal problems. 3. The students who are proficient at problem-solving, understanding, execution, and looking-back have a tendency to classify mathematical verbal problems from a structural viewpoint, while the students who are not proficient at the above four abilities have a tendency to classify mathematical verbal problems from a contextual viewpoint. As the above results, following conclusions can be made. 1. The students have recognized at least two fundamental dimensions of structure and context when they classified mathematical verbal problems. 2. The abilities of understanding, execution, and looking- back effect problem-solving ability correlating with each other. 3. The instruction emphasizing the importance of the structure of mathematical problems could be one of the methods cultivating student's problem-solving ability.

  • This research aims to suggest a math-based convergence instructional model. The convergence instructional model with emphasis on problem solving ability was developed based on each subject and the STEAM model. Then, the appropriateness and limit of the classroom model were investigated, through examining the aspects of its realization in each stage of the class instruction model while enacting a four part lesson on 6th graders. As a result, each stage of the classroom instruction model influenced in helping the students discover various problem solving skills, critically examine the process of the solving, and attain positive perspectives on the classroom instruction. However, appropriate intervention of the teacher was needed to lead the students to further synthesize the explored issues in mathematics and to expand the scope of their emotional experience. This paper closes with suggestions in implementing math based convergence lessons.
