  • Cultivating creativity is one of the goals in science education. Previous studies report that students use visualization while they solve the creative science problem and it looks helpful to make them think more. For this study three $6^{th}$ grade students were selected in the consideration of pre-test through the qualitative think-aloud method. The results show that even though students have many ideas in planning stage in problem solving, they appeared to visualize familiar and empirical ideas at first. So if teachers want to watch another creative ideas, they tended to give enough time to visualize many ideas. Students drew lines, circles, "X"marks to select or remove information during their problem solving works. They said these marks seem to be useful to understand question. However, removal marks sometimes turn out to block another chance to re-think. Also students did not have a chance to reflect what they did. It means that they lose the chance to do convergent thinking. The implications of this study include the importance of students' visualization works to facilitate their creative ideas and support their problem solving strategies. In this study, we discuss the meaningful messages for teachers who construct science classroom for creativity.

  • This research is focused on the influence of internalization problem and attachment to parents on the adjustment to school life, as well as on the attachment to parents as moderators in the influence of the process of internalization problem on the adjustment to school life. To verify the hypothesis, a survey research method was applied using stratified cluster sampling method, and focusing on middle school students in Seoul. Eleven schools were selected randomly from each of the eleven District Offices of Education in Seoul, and data were collected from 1,200 students. The data were analyzed by using the T-test and hierarchical regression methods, and the results are as follows. First, the internalization problem has negatively affected the adjustment to school life. Secondly, the moderators of the attachment to parents in the adjustment to school life were investigated. Through the above mentioned analysis, it can be deducted that, intervention with internalization problem is required in order to promote the adjustment to school life, and the importance of the attachment to parents should be addressed in the intervention for improving adjustment to school life.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate effects of mental capacity and mental demand on problem solving. Two kinds of tests were used for this study. One was FIT 752 test which required general knowledge, the other was Ohm's law test which required domain specific knowledge. The items of each test had the same logical structure and content knowledge but had different sizes of mental demand. The results of the study were summarized as follows: As mental demand of the items increased, the success rates decreased. The analysis of the hierarchical relation among items was that items with large mental demand were higher than those with small demand or at least the same level. According to the results, mental of an item was a significant factor affecting solving the problem. Effect of mental capacity on problem solving was different according to the kind of required knowledge to solve. Mental capacity was a significant factor affecting solving the FIT 752 task which required general knowledge. On the contary, solving the task which required domain specific knowledge, the results were different depending on subjects' chunk size. The results of problem solving of the groups which had small chunk size were that mental capacity was appeared a significant factor. However, results of problem solving of groups which had large chunk size were that mental capacity was not.

  • In this study, we surveyed characteristics of the science related collaborative problem solving competency of pre-service elementary teachers, especially required in the digital age. The participants in online survey were 119 pre-service elementary teachers of National University of Education located in Gangwon province. The analyzed results of survey were as follows: First, pre-service teachers performed their task responsibly in collaborative problem solving context related to science. However, they lacked competencies in making rubrics for problem solving processes or outcomes, and setting up rules about team activities. Second, in using ICT technology, the competencies of utilizing tools such as app and software lacked compared with the competencies of searching data in online and using ppt. Third, there was no statistically significant difference among groups by their intensive major in university or selective subject in high school. Nevertheless, pre-service teachers majoring in natural science showed more persistence than those majoring in humanities in problem solving context. Finally, there was no significant gender difference except 'clear communication and accomplishment'. That is, female pre-service teachers performed more responsible in their task and showed more fluency in communication and presentation within their group than male counterparts. Based on these results, implications in the field of pre-service teacher education were discussed.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to investigate problem behavior and its related factors in school-aged children. Methods: A descriptive correlational study was conducted with 221 mothers of children at 1st to 6th grades. Data were collected from March to April, 2015 using self-report structured questionnaires. Questionnaires included characteristics of subjects, Korean Child Behavior Checklist for measuring problem behavior and Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire for assessing sleeping habits. Collected data were analyzed by independent t-test, $x^2$ test, and multiple logistic regression. Results: In logistic regression analysis, having any maternal job (aOR=2.8, 95% CI=1.1~6.9) and higher daytime sleepiness (aOR=2.9, 95% CI=1.2~7.4) were statistically significant contributors of internal problems. Higher bedtime resistance (aOR=2.2, 95% CI=1.0~4.9) and higher daytime sleepiness (aOR=2.8, 95% CI=1.2~6.3) were statistically significant contributors of external problems. Higher bedtime resistance (aOR=4.3, 95% CI=1.5~12.4) was statistically significant contributors of total problem behavior. Conclusion: School-aged children with sleeping problem are at risk for problem behavior. More attention is need to consider sleeping habits for supporting behavioral improvement in school-aged children.

  • This study was to investigate the relationships between stress coping strategies, emotion regulation ability and behavior problems with children from low-income families and middle-income families. Subjects were 171 children from low-income families and 228 children from middle-income families, 4th - 6th grade in elementary school. The major findings are followings: (1) The level of emotion regulation ability in children from low-income families was lower and active stress coping strategies were less than children from middle-income families. In the behavior problem, children from low-income families were higher than children from middle-income families. (2) The stress coping strategies(active/ social support) in children from low-income families were related with internal behavior problem(anxiety /withdrawal). And the emotion regulation ability was related to the children's behavior problem. (3) Regression analysis model showed that emotion-regulation ability was the most influential factor to the children's behavior problem, and children from low-income families with aggressive coping strategy showed hyperactive behavior problem. So, the education/therapy programs for children from low-income families have to be developed and practiced in schools, local children centers and so on.

  • The purpose of this paper is to analysis the basic network problem which can be applied to the mathematically gifted students in elementary school. Mainly, we discuss didactic transpositions of the double counting principle, the game of sprouts, Eulerian graph problem, and the minimum connector problem. Here the double counting principle is related to the handshaking lemma; in any graph, the sum of all the vertex-degree is equal to the number of edges. The selection of these subjects are based on the viewpoint; to familiar to graph theory, to raise algorithmic thinking, to apply to the real-world problem. The theoretical background of didactic transpositions of these subjects are based on the Polya's mathematical heuristics and Lakatos's philosophy of mathematics; quasi-empirical, proofs and refutations as a logic of mathematical discovery.
