Mobile cellular networks are becoming increasingly complex to manage while classical deployment/optimization techniques and current solutions (i.e., cell densification, acquiring more spectrum, etc.) are cost-ineffective and thus seen as stopgaps. This calls for development of novel approaches that leverage recent advances in storage/memory, context-awareness, edge/cloud computing, and falls into framework of big data. However, the big data by itself is yet another complex phenomena to handle and comes with its notorious 4V: Velocity, voracity, volume, and variety. In this work, we address these issues in optimization of 5G wireless networks via the notion of proactive caching at the base stations. In particular, we investigate the gains of proactive caching in terms of backhaul offloadings and request satisfactions, while tackling the large-amount of available data for content popularity estimation. In order to estimate the content popularity, we first collect users' mobile traffic data from a Turkish telecom operator from several base stations in hours of time interval. Then, an analysis is carried out locally on a big data platformand the gains of proactive caching at the base stations are investigated via numerical simulations. It turns out that several gains are possible depending on the level of available information and storage size. For instance, with 10% of content ratings and 15.4Gbyte of storage size (87%of total catalog size), proactive caching achieves 100% of request satisfaction and offloads 98% of the backhaul when considering 16 base stations.

Recently, Portable Internet being standardized provides fast movement with wider service range than wireless LAN does. If Portable Internet service starts, many people will use Portable Internet and thus wireless traffic is going to increase. In Portable Internet, it is important to reduce handover latency to provide user with satisfactory service when handover occurs. In IEEE 802.16e, MSS sends its own security context information to one Base Station which it will move to reduce handover latency. But this is not suitable in the situation that the BS doesn't know the security context. To reduce handover latency of proactive caching method that is to send security context information to adjacency Base Stations in advance has been proposed by[4]. In this paper we propose effective traffic management algorithm to reduce signaling network traffic caused by proactive caching method.

We studied the current state-of-the-art of Smart TV, the challenges and the drawbacks. Mainly we discussed the lack of end-to-end solution. We then illustrated the differences between Smart TV and IPTV from network service provider point of view. Unlike IPTV, viewer of Smart TV's over-the-top (OTT) services could be global, such as foreign nationals in a country or viewers having special viewing preferences. Those viewers are sparsely distributed. The existing TV service deployment models over Internet are not suitable for such viewers as they are based on content popularity, hence we propose a community based service deployment methodology with proactive content caching on rendezvous points (RPs). In our proposal, RPs are intermediate nodes responsible for caching routing and decision making. The viewer's community formation is based on geographical locations and similarity of their interests. The idea of using context information to do proactive caching is itself not new, but we combined this with "in network caching" mechanism of content centric network (CCN) architecture. We gauge the performance improvement achieved by a community model. The result shows that when the total numbers of requests are same; our model can have significantly better performance, especially for sparsely distributed communities.

In vehicular communications environment, content pre-caching can reduce the delay time from the user to the content server. However, the problem of where and how much pre-caching is still not solved. In this paper, based on the movement probability of the vehicle, we propose a method for pre-caching by distributing the optimized amount of content to each base station candidate that the vehicle will move as follows. First, the movement probability of each vehicle was learned using Markov Model. And the amount of content to be distributed and pre-cached was optimized based on the wireless environment. In experiments based on NS-3, the proposed strategy maintained the least delay compared to the existing protocol, leading to the most traffic-saving results.

As the use of mobile data increases, the proportion of video content is increasing steeply. In order to solve problems that arise when mobile users receive data from geographically remote cloud servers, methods of caching data in advance to edge servers geographically close to the users are attracting lots of attention. In this paper, we present a caching policy that stores data on Small Cell Base Station(SBS) to effectively provide content files to mobile users by applying a delayed offloading scheme in a cellular network. The goal of the proposed policy is to minimize the size of data transmitted from Macro Base Station(MBS) because the delayed offloading scheme requires more cost than when downloaded from MBS than from SBS. The caching policy is proposed to determine the size of content file and which content file to be cached to SBS using the probability of mobile users' paths and the popularity of content files, and to replace content files in consideration of the overlapping coverage of SBS. In addition, through performance evaluation, it has been proven that the proposed policy reduces the size of data downloaded from MBS compared to other algorithms.

A Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET) is characterized by multi-hop wireless connectivity, frequently changing network topology with mobile nodes and the efficiency of the dynamic routing protocol plays an important role in the performance of the network. In this paper, the performance of five routing protocols for MANET is compared by using OPNET modeler: AODV, DSR, GRP, OLSR and TORA. The various performance metrics are examined, such as packet delivery ratio, end-to-end delay and routing overhead with varying data traffic, number of nodes and mobility. In our simulation results, OLSR shows the best performance in terms of data delivery ratio in static networks, while AODV has the best performance in mobile networks with moderate data traffic. When comparing proactive protocols (OLSR, GRP) and reactive protocols (AODV, DSR) with varying data traffic in the static networks, proactive protocols consistently presents almost constant overhead while the reactive protocols show a sharp increase to some extent. When comparing each of proactive protocols in static and mobile networks, OLSR is better than GRP in the delivery ratio while overhead is more. As for reactive protocols, DSR outperforms AODV under the moderate data traffic in static networks because it exploits caching aggressively and maintains multiple routes per destination. However, this advantage turns into disadvantage in high mobility networks since the chance of the cached routes becoming stale increases.
Caching popular videos in the storage of base stations is an efficient method to reduce the transmission latency. This paper proposes an incentive proactive cache mechanism in the wireless network to motivate the content providers (CPs) to participate in the caching procedure. The system consists of one/many Infrastructure Provider (InP) and many CPs. The InP aims to define the price it charges the CPs to maximize its revenue while the CPs compete to determine the number of files they cache at the InP's base stations (BSs). We conceive this system within the framework of Stackelberg game where InP is considered as the leader and CPs are the followers. By using backward induction, we show closed form of the amount of cache space that each CP renting on each base station and then solve the optimization problem to calculate the price that InP leases each CP. This is different from the existing works in that we consider the non-uniform pricing scheme. The numerical results show that InP's profit in the proposed scheme is higher than in the uniform pricing.

For several years, virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies have been improving. However, some hurdles remain that slow down the distribution of VR and AR devices, such as head-mounted display (HMD), and related consumer content. One issue is VR motion sickness, which has been experienced by users using 360 degree VR content via HMD. This paper discusses the related international standardization work that classifies the factors causing VR sickness, and proposes the process for VR sickness level evaluation. Among the factors causing VR sickness, many research institutes regard minimizing MTP (Motion-to-Photon) latency as the key enabler to mitigate VR sickness. Thus, this paper introduces research trends of MTP latency measurement and MTP latency mitigation. This paper categorizes the research on MTP latency measurement into 2 categories of hardware-based approach and software code-level approach. The 2 approaches have different pros and cons depending on use-case, purpose, and architecture of each multimedia system. The pros and cons are addressed in this paper. Additionally, the research on mitigating MTP latency with diverse strategies such as proactive computing, caching, and edge server technology is explained, and compared to conventional technologies, shows improved performance.

The IEEE WAVE standard specification does not support handover operation since it is designed to transmit mainly the ITS-related messages that are limited in length. More advanced multimedia applications such as Internet browsing and streaming of video clips produced by CCTVs, however, require handover support such that a sequence of data packets can be received seamlessly while an OBU's association with the RSUs changes. This paper presents a new handover scheme that can operate without performance degradation in the cases where there are multiple RSUs in the areas of handover by making use of the IEEE 802.11f IAPP Move-notify messages, based on the fast handover scheme with proactive caching by disassociation messages introduced previously. Experimental results from the simulation shows that the proposed handover scheme outperforms the scheme based solely on multicast.
