In the era of the 4th industrial revolution, the development of information technology brought various benefits, but it also increased social interest in privacy issues. As the possibility of personal privacy violation by big data increases, academic discussion about privacy management has begun to be active. While the traditional view of privacy has been defined at various levels as the basic human rights, most of the recent research trends are mainly concerned only with the information privacy of online privacy protection. This limited discussion can distort the theoretical concept and the actual perception, making the academic and social consensus of the concept of privacy more difficult. In this study, we analyze the privacy concept that is exposed on the internet based on 12,000 news data of the portal site for the past one year and compare the difference between the theoretical concept and the socially accepted concept. This empirical approach is expected to provide an understanding of the changing concept of privacy and a research direction for the conceptualization of privacy for current situations.
Due to increasing demand for improving road safety and optimizing road traffic, Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks (VANET) have been subject to extensive attentions from all aspects of commercial industry and academic community. Security and user privacy are fundamental issues for all possible promising applications in VANET. Most of the existing security proposals for secure VANET concentrate authentication with privacy preservation in vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-roadside infrastructure (V2I) communications and require huge storage and network capacity for management of revocation list. Motivated by the fact, we propose a new scheme with security and privacy preservation which combines V2V and V2I communication. With our proposed scheme, the communication and computational delay for authentication and overhead for management of revocation list can be significantly reduced due to mutual authentication between a vehicle and a Roadside Unit (RSU) requires only two messages, and the RSU issues the anonymous certificate for the vehicle on behalf of the Trust Authority (TA). We demonstrate that the proposed protocol cannot only guarantee the requirements of security and privacy but can also provide efficiency of authentication and management of revocation list.
Internet of Things (IoTs) technology makes every things in physical world being digitalized and communicated with each other. The technology is emerging as a new paradigm and is expected to provide a convenient and effective life. However, for the successful realization of the IoT technologies, IoT security issues are an important prerequisite, and particularly the privacy protection is expected to become more important in view of object communication directively related with human. In this paper we describe for the security and privacy threats in IoT environment and introduce the shodan (a legitimate search engine that finds backdoor routers, switches, webcams, IoT devices connected to the Internet etc.) that can expose the security and privacy problems. Lastly, we compare the privacy threats through real-world case study of network cameras currently in use and finally derive the countermeasures for the threats.
In the information age, cheap price of information processing and advances in personalization technology have allowed companies to enhance the relationships with their existing customers and to expand their customer base by effectively attracting new customers. However, most customers are reluctant to provide their personal information to companies. This study explores the tension between companies' desire to collect personal information to offer personalized services and their customers' privacy concerns. The psychological reactance theory suggests that when individuals feel that their behavioral choice is threatened or restricted, they are motivated to restore their freedom. Therefore, despite the expected benefits from personalized services, customers may perceive the services to be restrictive of their freedom to choose. This adverse effect may undermine the relationships between companies and their customers. We conducted experiments to explore the dynamic roles of transactional and environmental factors in motivating customers to provide personal information. We revisited online privacy issues from the perspective of psychological reactance. For the experiments, we created an online shop and randomly assigned the participants to one of the two experimental conditions-high and low levels of information requirements. The results of the experiment indicate that threatening the free choice serves as a transactional cost in online profiling. On the other hand, the expected benefits of personalization services have positive correlations with customers' willingness to provide personal information. This study explains privacy based on transactional and environmental factors. Our findings also indicate that the environmental factors such as the Internet privacy risk and trust propensity do not significantly affect the willingness to provide personal information when firms required much personal information. Implications and contributions are discussed.

Recent advances in sensor and mobile technologies have made it possible to collect user location data. This location information is used as a valuable asset in various industries, resulting in increased demand for location data collection and sharing. However, because location data contains sensitive user information, indiscriminate collection can lead to privacy issues. Recently, geo-indistinguishability (Geo-I), a method of differential privacy, has been widely used to protect the privacy of location data. While Geo-I is powerful in effectively protecting users' locations, it poses a problem because the utility of the collected location data decreases due to data perturbation. Therefore, this paper proposes a method using Geo-I technology to effectively collect user location data while maintaining its data utility. The proposed method utilizes the prior distribution of users to improve the overall data utility, while protecting accurate location information. Experimental results using real data show that the proposed method significantly improves the usefulness of the collected data compared to existing methods.

The purpose of this study is to explore information ethics issues based on academic big data from Web of Science (WoS) and to provide implications for information ethics education in informatics subject. To this end, 318 published papers from WoS related to information ethics were text mined. Specifically, this paper analyzed the frequency of key-words(TF, DF, TF-IDF), information ethics issues using topic modeling, and frequency of appearances by year for each issue. This paper used 'tm', 'topicmodel' package of R for text mining. The main results are as follows. First, this paper confirmed that the words 'digital', 'student', 'software', and 'privacy' were the main key-words through TF-IDF. Second, the topic modeling analysis showed 8 issues such as 'Professional value', 'Cyber-bullying', 'AI and Social Impact' et al., and the proportion of 'Professional value' and 'Cyber-bullying' was relatively high. This study discussed the implications for information ethics education in Korea based on the results of this analysis.

Intelligent transportation system (ITS) is realized through a highly ephemeral network, i.e. vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) which is on its way towards the deployment stage, thanks to the advancements in the automobile and communication technologies. However, it has not been successful, at least to date, to install the technology in the mass of vehicles due to security and privacy challenges. Besides, the users of such technology do not want to put their privacy at stake as a result of communication with peer vehicles or with the infrastructure. Therefore serious privacy measures should be taken before bringing this technology to the roads. To date, privacy issues in ephemeral networks in general and in VANET in particular, have been dealt with through various approaches. So far, multiple pseudonymous approach is the most prominent approach. However, recently it has been found out that even multiple pseudonyms cannot protect the privacy of the user and profilation is still possible even if different pseudonym is used with every message. Therefore, another privacy-aware mechanism is essential in vehicular networks. In this paper, we propose a novel identity exchange mechanism to preserve conditional privacy of the users in VANET. Users exchange their pseudonyms with neighbors and then use neighbors' pseudonyms in their own messages. To this end, our proposed scheme conditionally preserves the privacy where the senders of the message can be revoked by the authorities in case of any dispute.

Mobile RFID system, that consists of the existing RFID reader mounted on the mobile devices such as smartphones, is able to provide the users a variety of services and convenience. Although the users can get the information about a certain product anytime anywhere, there is high probability that their privacy may be violated because their belongings with RFID tags can be scanned by other mobile readers at any time. Several RFID authentication schemes have been proposed to deal with these privacy issues. However, since the existing solutions require heavy computation on the tag side, most of them is not applicable to the general low-cost passive tags which do not have any processing unit. In this paper, we propose the efficient authentication scheme for mobile RFID system applicable to the passive tags as well as the active ones by the best use of computing capability of mobile devices. The proposed scheme satisfies the import security issues such as tag protection, untraceability, anti-traffic analysis. We also implement the proposed scheme on top of real smartphone for feasibility and show the experimental results from it.
The various digital services that people are experiencing recently are bringing about changes in the daily lives, and these changes are due to the spread of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The 4th Industrial Revolution is based on the development of ICT technology, and ICT technology inevitably generates issues such as the use and protection of personal information as well as the use of public data. Accordingly, countries around the world are making efforts to revitalize new industries by wisely solving conflicting issues between the use and protection of personal information through legislation. There are some differences in the protection and use of personal information in Korea, the United States, and the EU. Korea trys to make the legislation that prioritizes the use of data, and the United States establishes individual laws governing the protection of personal information by sector, while the EU has clarified the strengthening personal information protection. This paper aims to find out how personal information protection is defined in Korea, the United States, and the EU through enacted laws and organize the direction of the future policies.
