The aircrafts with high aspect ratio wings made by a composite material have been developed, which enable high energy efficiency and long-term flight by reducing air resistance and structural weight. However, they have difficulties in securing the aeroelastic stability such as the flutter because of their long and flexible wings. The flutter is unstable self-excited-vibration caused by interaction between the structural dynamics and the aerodynamics. It should be verified analytically prior to first flight test that the flutter does not happen in the range of flight mission. Normally, the finite element model is used for the flutter analysis. So it is important to construct the finite element model representing dynamic characteristics similar to those of a real aircraft. Accordingly, in this research, to acquire dynamic characteristics experimentally the modal test of the aircraft with high aspect ratio composite wings was conducted. And then the modal parameters from the finite element analysis(FEA) were compared with those from the modal test. To make analysis results closer to test results, the finite element model was updated by means of the sensitivity analysis on variables and the optimization. Finally, it was proved that the updated finite element model is reliable as compared with the results of the modal test.
In the current study, we present a new model for the prediction of the strip profile and the residual stresses. This new approach is an analytical model that predicts the residual stresses from the effect of post-deformation. Since the residual stress cannot exceed the yield strength of the material, post-yielding may possibly occur in the post-deformation zone prior to the strip reaching the steady-state zone. The prediction accuracy of the proposed model is examined through comparison with the predictions from 3-D finite element (FE) simulations.
This paper presents the dynamic modeling and control methodology to arrest structural deflections of industrial robotic manipulators featuring elastic members retrofitted with surface bonded pizoelectric actuators and sensors. The cynamic modeling is accomplished by employing a variational theorem, prior to developing a finite element formulation. This finite element formulation accounts for both original robot member elements and also bonded piezoelectric material elements. The governing equation of motion is then modified by condensing the electric potential vectors and subsequently two different negative velocity feedback controllers are established; a constant-gain feedback controller and a constant- amplitude feedback controller. By adopting a Model P50 articulating industrial robot manufactured by Gerneral Electric Company, conputer simulations are underlaken in order to demonstrate superior performance characteristics to be accrued from this proposed methodology such as smaller deflections at the end-effector.
In this work, a novel artificial circular muscle based on shape memory alloy (S.M.A.) is proposed. The design is inspired from the natural circular muscles found in certain organs of the human body such as the small intestine. The heating of the prestrained SMA artificial muscle will induce its contraction. In order to measure the mechanical work provided in this case, the muscle will be mounted on a silicone rubber cylindrical tube prior to heating. After cooling, the reaction of the rubber tube will involve the return of the muscle to its prestrained state. A finite element model of the new SMA artificial muscle was built using the software "ABAQUS". The SMA thermomechanical behavior law was implemented using the user subroutine "UMAT". The numerical results of the finite element analysis of the SMA muscle are presented to shown that the proposed design is able to mimic the behavior of a natural circular muscle.
Though the history of finite element analysis in field of powder metallurgy is not short, industrial engineer is still being dependent on the trial and error approach based on engineer's experience in selecting process conditions. This problem is mainly due to the difficulty in establishing models for the behavior of a powder compact during compaction and sintering as well as finding material parameters for the models and the absence of CAE software with which industrial engineer can easily investigate the effect of process conditions on the quality of product. Therefore, we established very simple and cheap procedure to find material parameters for powder compaction behavior and implemented it in self-developed commercial CAE software for powder metallurgy, PMsolver. Basically, the development strategy of PMsolver lies on simplification and convenience so as for industrial engineers to use it with least training. Using PMsolver, optimal process conditions were found for some geometry and powders. Prior to process condition design, the accuracy of finite element analysis was verified.
Finite element method was utilized to analyze crack tip stress and displacement field under drying stress case as stepwise loading. Opening mode of single-edge-notched model was employed and analyzed by linear elastic fracture mechanics of plane stress case. The drying stresses were applied as stepwise loads at the boundary elements of the model with 10 steps of time serial. The stress intensity factor($K_I$) for opening mode reached to its maximum just prior to the stress reversal. The $K_I$ from the displacement fields revealed 1.7 times higher than those from stress fields. By comparing the two sets of $K_I$ from displacement and stress fields, single parameter $K_I$ showed its validity to characterize displacement fields around the crack tip front while stress field could not be characterized due to large variations between two sets of data.
To predict vibrational energy density of simple structural-acoustic coupled systems in medium-to-high frequency ranges, Power Flow Finite Element Method(PFFEM) is used, and PFFEM sofiware, PFADS has been developed for the vibration predictions and analysis of coupled system structures in medium-to-high frequency ranges. However, it needs to consider vibro-acoustic coupled analysis to get more accurate results. Prior to implement vibro-acoustic coupled analysis functions in PFADS, research on vibro-acoustic coupled analysis using PFFEH is performed for simple models. These predictions include the indirect transmission path associated, and also the direct transmission path, and the formulation is extended to structural system model by using appropriate modifications to structural-acoustic and acoustic-acoustic joint matrices. Concerning the waves in plate and acoustic, it is possible to calculate the structural-acoustic full matrix of a model using PFFEM, and the formulations developed are implemented for two rooms surrounded by plates.
Predicting the mechanical properties of the 3-D scaffold using finite element method (FEM) simulation is important to the practical application of tissue engineering. However, the porous structure of the scaffold complicates computer simulations, and calculating scaffold models at the pore level is time-consuming. In some cases, the demands of the procedure are too high for a computer to run the standard code. To address this problem, the representative volume element (RVE) theory was introduced, but studies on RVE modeling applied to the 3-D scaffold model have not been focused. In this paper, we propose an improved FEM-based RVE modeling strategy to better predict the mechanical properties of the scaffold prior to fabrication. To improve the precision of RVE modeling, we evaluated various RVE models of newly designed 3-D scaffolds using FEM simulation. The scaffolds were then constructed using microstereolithography technology, and their mechanical properties were measured for comparison.
This study investigates the structural integrity of the amphibious tour bus under the rollover condition. The multi-purpose bus called Dual Mode Tour Bus (DMTB) which explores on land and water has been designed on top of a truck platform. Prior to the fabrication of new upper body and sailing equipment of DMTB, computational analysis investigates the rollover protection of the proposed structure including superstructure, wheels, and axles. The Computer-Aided Design (CAD) of the whole vehicle model is meshed and preprocessed under high performance using the Altair HyperMesh to attain the best mesh model suited for finite element analysis (FEA) on the proposed system. Meanwhile, the numerical model is analyzed by employing LS-DYNA to evaluate the superstructure strength. The numerical model includes detail information about the microstructure and considers wheels and axles as rigid bodies but excludes window glasses, seats, and interior parts. Based on the simulation analysis and proper modifications especially on the rear portion of the bus, the local stiffness significantly increased. The vehicle is rotated to the contact point on the ground based on the mathematical method presented in this study to save computational cost. The results show that the proposed method of rollover analysis is highly significant not only in bus rollover tests but in crashworthiness studies for other application. The critical impartments in our suggested dual-purpose bus accepted and passed "Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) R66".
