In this paper, we propose a cooperative hybrid spectrum sharing protocol by jointly considering interweave (opportunistic) and underlay schemes. In the proposed protocol, secondary users can access the licensed spectrum along with the primary system. Our network scenario comprises a single primary transmitter-receiver (PTx-PRx) pair and a group of M secondary transmitter-receiver (STx-SRx) pairs within the transmission range of the primary system. Secondary transmitters are divided into two groups: active and inactive. A secondary transmitter that gets an opportunity to access the secondary spectrum is called "active". One of the idle or inactive secondary transmitters that achieves the primary request target rate $R_{PT}$ will be selected as a best decode-and-forward (DF) relay (Re) to forward the primary information when the data rate of the direct link between PTx and PRx falls below $R_{PT}$. We investigate the ergodic capacity and outage probability of the primary system with cooperative relaying and outage probability of the secondary system. Our theoretical and simulation results show that both the primary and secondary systems are able to achieve performance improvement in terms of outage probability. It is also shown that ergodic capacity and outage probability improve when the active secondary transmitter is located farther away from the PRx.

This paper evaluates the outage probability of cognitive relay networks with cooperation between secondary users based on the underlay approach, when multiple primary receivers coexist with secondary users. Using an appropriate relay selection criterion in cognitive radio networks, we derive the outage probability of secondary user. It is shown that the outage probability increases as the number of primary receivers increases and we quantify the increase. Through the simulation results, we verify that the performance of relaying transmission is varied more sensitively compared to that of direct transmission as the number of primary receivers increases. In addition, the relaying transmission can be less efficient than the direct transmission when multiple primary receiver exist but it can be more efficient than the direct transmission by increasing the relay selection diversity.
This study addresses the effects of channel estimation error and mutual interference between licensed and unlicensed systems on outage performance of reactive relay selection in unlicensed systems over independent non-identical (i.n.i) Rayleigh fading channels and under both the maximum transmit power constraint and primary outage constraint. Toward this end, power allocation for unlicensed users is first recommended to satisfy both constraints and account for channel estimation error and mutual interference. Then, we derive an exact closed-form outage probability representation for unlicensed systems to quickly evaluate this effect in key operation parameters. Various results corroborate the derived expressions and provide useful insights into system performance.
This article proposes a spectrum sharing method which can avoid the mutual interference in both primary and secondary systems. The two systems make them a priority to use two single-dimension orthogonal signals, the real and imaginary pulse amplitude modulation signals, if the primary system is not in outage with this use. A secondary transmitter is selected to be the primary relay and the active secondary source to perform this. This allows a simultaneous spectrum access without any mutual interference. Otherwise, the primary system attempts to use a full two-dimensional signal, the quadrature amplitude modulation signal. If there is no outage with respect to this use, the secondary spectrum access is not allowed. When both of the previous attempts fail, the secondary system is allowed to freely use the spectrum two whole time slots. The analysis and simulation are provided to analyze the outage performance and they validate the considerable improvement of the proposed method as compared to the conventional one.

In this paper, we investigate cooperative diversity in a spectrum sharing environment where secondary users utilize primary users' spectrum only if the interference power received at the primary users is maintained below a predetermined level. The outage probability of a selective decode-and-forward (DF) based cooperative diversity scheme in the secondary network is derived to analyze the effects of spectrum sharing on cooperative diversity. Our analytical and simulation results show that the outage probability is saturated at a certain level of transmit power of secondary users due to interference regulation, and, hence, cooperative diversity gains are lost. Through asymptotic analysis, we also identify the critical value of transmit SNR beyond which the outage probability is saturated.

In this paper, we investigate the outage performance of a cognitive relay network. We consider mutual interference in an independent, non-identically distributed Nakagmai-m fading environment. We first derive the close-form outage probability expression, which provides an efficient means to evaluate the effects of several parameters. This allows us to study the impact of several parameters on the network's performance. We then derive the asymptotic expression and reveal that the diversity order is strictly determined by the fading severity of the cognitive system. It is not affected by the primary network. Moreover, the primary network only affects the coding gain of the cognitive system. Finally, Monte Carlo simulations are provided, which corroborate the analytical results.

In this paper, we investigate a power control problem which is very critical in underlay-based spectrum sharing systems. Although an underlay-based spectrum sharing system is more efficient compared to an overlay-based spectrum sharing system in terms of spectral utilization, some practical problems obstruct its commercialization. One of them is a real-time-based power adaptation of secondary transmitters. In the underlay-based spectrum sharing system, it is essential to adapt secondary user's transmit power to interference channel states to secure primary users' communication. Thus, we propose a practical power control scheme for secondary transmitters. The feedback overhead of our proposed scheme is insignificant because it requires one-bit signaling, while the optimal power control scheme requires the perfect information of channel states. In addition, the proposed scheme is robust to feedback delay. We compare the performance of the optimal and proposed schemes in terms of primary user's outage probability and secondary user's throughput. Our simulation results show that the proposed scheme is almost optimal in terms of both primary user's outage probability and secondary user's throughput when the secondary user's transmit power is low. As the secondary user's transmit power increases, the primary user's outage probability of the proposed scheme is degraded compared with the optimal scheme while the secondary user's throughput still approaches that of the optimal scheme. If the feedback delay is considered, however, the proposed scheme approaches the optimal scheme in terms of both the primary user's outage probability and secondary user's throughput regardless of the secondary user's transmit power.

In this paper, we investigate the power allocation for cognitive relay networks. Cognitive relay networks offer not only increasing spectral efficiency by spectrum sharing but also extending the coverage through the use of relays. For spectrum sharing, conventional works have assumed that secondary users know perfect channel information between the secondary and primary users. However, this channel information may be outdated at the secondary user because of the time-varying properties or feedback latency from the primary user. This causes the violation for interference constraint, and the secondary user cannot share the spectrum of the primary after all. To overcome this problem, we propose the power allocation scheme for the secondary user under the allowable primary user's outage probability constraint. Since the proposed power allocation scheme does not use the instantaneous channel information, the secondary users have lower feedback burden. In addition, the proposed scheme is also robust to the outdated channel environment.

Although underlay spectrum sharing has been shown as a promising technique to promote the spectrum utilization in cognitive radio networks (CRNs), it may suffer bad secondary performance due to the strict power constraints imposed at secondary systems and the interference from primary systems. In this paper, we propose a two-phase based cooperative transmission protocol with the interference cancellation (IC) and best-relay selection to improve the secondary performance in underlay models under stringent power constraints while ensuring the primary quality-of-service (QoS). In the proposed protocol, IC is employed at both the secondary relays and the secondary destination, where the IC-based best-relay selection and cooperative relaying schemes are well developed to reduce the interference from primary systems. The closed-form expression of secondary outage probability is derived for the proposed protocol over Rayleigh fading channels. Simulation results show that, with a guaranteed primary outage probability, the proposed protocol can achieve not only lower secondary outage probability but also higher secondary diversity order than the traditional underlay case.

In this paper, we propose a cooperative multi-relay scheme for a secondary system to achieve spectrum access along with a primary system. In the primary network, a primary transmitter (PT) transmits the primary signal to a primary receiver (PR). In the secondary network, N secondary transmitter-receiver pairs (ST-SR) selected by a centralized control unit (CCU) are ready to assist the primary network. In particular, in the first time slot, PT broadcasts the primary signal to PR, which is also received by STs and SRs. At STs, the primary signal is regenerated and linearly combined with the secondary signal by assigning fractions of the available power to the primary and secondary signals respectively. The combined signal is then broadcasted by STs in a predetermined order. In order to achieve diversity gain, STs, SRs and PT will combine received replicas of the primary signal, using selection combining technique (SC). We derive the exact outage probability for the primary network as well as the secondary network. The simulation results are presented to verify the theoretical analyses.
