The ginseng root has been used as a tonic remedy, and its antidiabetic activity has been demonstrated as early as 1920s. Although wild ginseng was anecdotally thought to be superior to cultivated ginseng in terms of pharmacological properties, there have been no prior reports on its improvement of metabolic syndrome. In this study, we figured out whether wild ginseng ethanol extract (WGEE) exerted the preventive effects on high fat diet-induced metabolic syndrome as well as treatment effect in ICR mice. In the preventive mode experiment, WGEE at 500 mg/kg significantly inhibited body weight gain $(16\%)$, fasting blood glucose $(37\%)$ and insulin $(37\%)$, triglyceride $(15\%)$, and free fatty acid levels $(32\%)$ when compared to those in high fat diet (HFD) fed control group. WGEE-treated mice at doses of 250 and 500mg/kg improved the insulin resistance index by $55\%\;and\;61\%$ compared to the HFD control group, respectively. In the treatment mode experiment, WGEE also markedly reduced the blood glucose levels (210 mg/dl in control group was lowered to 167 mg/dl).Taken together, WGEE has potential as a preventive and treatment agent for metabolic syndrome and deserves clinical trial in the near future.

To understand the micro-mechanical changes and the effects of the fluoride on rat's femur after administration of sodium fluoride, the three-point bending test, acoustic emission analysis during the three-point bending test and scanning electron microscopy were performed. The obtained results were as follows: 1. Bone strength increased in the rats given 1, 5, 10 and 20 ppm of fluoride but, there were no statistical significances (p>0.05). 2. With increasing the concentration of fluoride, most AE events released rapidly just before the maximum load and smaller events were recorded than the control group's. The average of cumulative AE event counts until maximum load of the femur in 20 ppm group were significantly small with respect to the control group's (p<0.05). 3. Fracture surfaces were well coincide with the results of acoustic emission behavior. Analyses of fracture surfaces indicated that, consistent with its the highest load, rat femur in 20 ppm fluoride group displays the roughest surface.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to identify a conceptual link between role conflict, job satisfaction, and organizational commitment, with a specific examination on how job satisfaction mediated the relationship between role conflict and organizational commitment, among community healthcare workers. Methods: Participants were 119 community healthcare workers of the Seoul Preventive Project for Metabolic Syndrome at 15 community health centers. Descriptive analysis, correlations analysis, and multiple regression analysis were used for statistical analysis of our data. Additionally, Sobel's test was used to verify the significance of the mediating effect. Results: An inverse association between role conflict and organizational commitment was found (beta=-0.53, p<.001). This relationship was fully mediated by job satisfaction (z=-6.43, p<.001). Conclusion: Job satisfaction mediates the effects of role conflict on the organizational commitment of healthcare workers in community health centers. Strategies for improving the components of job satisfaction are needed to achieve better outcomes in organizational commitment in the Seoul Preventive Project for Metabolic Syndrome and possibly other work settings.
The average human life span has increased due to the development of modern medicine and science, resulting in prolonged life expectancy and increase in the population counts of the geriatric age group. In particular, a dramatic increase of elderly patients suffering from senile disorders including neurodegenerative diseases, Alzheimer's disease(AD), and vascular dementia has become a serious social problem in public health. Thus, this study is aimed to summarize available clinical trial data on several commonly used medicines include donepezil, rivastigmine, galantamine, memantine and oriental medicine, and examine the effect of oriental medicine combined with western medicine in the treatment of patients with senile disorders using the data from literature reviews and survey studies.
Alterations of H-and M-isozymes of Lactic Dehydrogenase(LDH) were observed in the various tissues after exposing the rats to 50ppm and 250ppm of sulfur dioxide. These isozymes of the respective tissue were separated by Diethlaminoethyl (DTAE)-cellulose from the tissue homogenates of brain, lung and muscle, presenting the activities by rate of reduction of nicotinamide-adenine-dinucleotide ($NAD^+$). Pure LDH and the coenzyme ($NAD^+$) were directly treated with sulfur dioxide in vitro in order to find out the direct to sulfur dioxide on LDH and $NAD^+$ and the results were as follows. 1. In the normal tissues, the H-isozyme activity was dominant in the brain and heart, and the M-isozyme in the muscle. 2. In the lung tissue of normal rats, there was no difference between the activity of H-and M-type of LDH. 3. When rats inhale sulfur dioxide gas in concentration of 50ppm and 250ppm, it appeared that the H-type tend to be suppressed in aerobic tissues and the M-type in anaerobic tissues. 4. In the lung tissue exposed to sulfur dioxide, both the LDH activities were suppressed. 5. It seems that LDH and the coenzyme ($NAD^+$) are not directly affected by exposing in sulfur dioxide gas.
We analyzed the effects of an Atopic Preventive Drink (APD) on the regulation of Th2 cytokines using RAW 264.7 macrophage cells. In the evaluation of nitric oxide (NO) production in cells, NO production levels were shown to be elevated only in the APD-treated group in a dose-dependent manner. In the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) with APD-treated group, NO production significantly decreased as APD concentration increased. Further, mRNA expression levels and protein concentrations of pro-inflammatory cytokines in cells were determined. Th2 stimulatory cytokine ($IL-1{\beta}$) and Th2 cytokine (IL-6 and IL-10) levels were significantly reduced in the LPS with APD-treated group compared to the only LPS-treated group. mRNA expression levels of inflammatory-related genes (COX-2 and iNOS) were significantly reduced in the LPS with APD-treated group compared to the only LPS-treated group. These results suggest that APD has an anti-atopic effect by reducing mRNA and proteins expressions of Th2 cytokines and inflammatory-related genes.

This study was performed to determine the cytotoxic effect of methanol extract from medicinal plants. 1. The cell viability was determined by MTT method. Their cytotoxic activities against three cancer cell lines such as A549, MDA-MB-231 and SNU-C4 cell line were tested. 2. Among them, The methanol extract of Saururus Ohinensis Bail showed the strongest cytotoxic effect against SNU-C4 cells. These results suggest that the methanol extract of Saururus Ohinensis Bail possessed a potential antitumorous agent. 3. The free radical scavenging activity using DPPH method was the strongest of Saururus Chinensis Bail extract.
Objectives : This study attempts to show how studies using non-experimental data can strengthen causal inferences by applying propensity score and instrumental variable methods based on the counterfactual framework. For illustrative purposes, we examine the effect of having private health insurance on the probability of experiencing at least one hospital admission in the previous year. Methods : Using data from the 4th wave of the Korea Labor and Income Panel Study, we compared the results obtained using propensity score and instrumental variable methods with those from conventional logistic and linear regression models, respectively. Results : While conventional multiple regression analyses fail to identify the effect, the results estimated using propensity score and instrumental variable methods suggest that having private health insurance has positive and statistically significant effects on hospital admission. Conclusions : This study demonstrates that propensity score and instrumental variable methods provide potentially useful alternatives to conventional regression approaches in making causal inferences using non-experimental data.

Hypoxia induced angiogenesis and inflammation are essential processes for metastasis and progress of solid tumors. We examined the anti-angiogenic and inflammation related activity of Kochiae Fructus (KF) extract. To investigate the roles of the KF extract, we performed MTS assay, western blots using HaCaT cells and $HepG_2$ cells. The results are as follows. The protein level of $HIF-1{\alpha}$ was reduced when induced by $CoCl_2$ in $HepG_2$ cells treated with KF extract and induced by IGF-11 in HaCaT cells treated with KF extract. KF extract reduced the mRNA level of VEGF in HaCaT cells and KF extract reduced the protein level of iNOS in HaCaT cells. These results suggest that KF extract contributes to the anti-angiogenic and anti-inflammatory activities and also we could assume that KF extract act as antioxidant or anti-inflammatory agents via reduction of $HIF-1{\alpha}$.
