Data were collected by means of the PAQ (The Preschool Adjustment Questionnaire) and questionnaires regarding the rearing attitudes of the mothers. For the purpose of data analysis, a T-test and one-way ANOVA were used. The results were as follows. First, there were significant differences in terms of the early adaptation of infants according to their ages and their length of experience in child care centers. Second, there were no significant differences in the early adaptation of infants according to the child rearing attitudes of the mothers and between unemployed mothers and the employed mothers. Third, there were significant differences in the early adaptation of infants according to the child care teachers' level of career experience and their ages.

The participants of this study were 162 mothers whose children have developmental disabilities and attend pre-school and social welfare centers for early education. This study investigates the time management behaviors of the participants, and whether these behaviors have an effect on their time management satisfaction and parenting stress. The findings were as follows: 1) The time management behaviors of the participants were lower than average, scoring 2.87 out of 5. The order of dimensional scores from highest to lowest were sequencing, planning, recording habits, evaluating, and setting goals. 2) Time management satisfaction and parenting stress for the participants exhibited a negative correlation. 3) Adaptation behaviors of the children and time management behaviors of the mothers were factors that had significant effects on the mothers' parenting stress. These results showed the importance of time management for mothers with developmentally disabled children.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the differences in interactive peer play according to the type of problem behavior. The subjects were 112(67 boys, 45 girls) S-year-old children at 25 daycare centers in Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Gyeongsang areas. Instruments included the Preschool Behavior Questionnaire(PBQ; Behar & Stringfield, 1974) and the Penn Interactive Peer Play Scale(PIPPS) in both the teacher version(Choi & Shin, 2008) and the parent version(Fantuzzo, Mendez, & Tighe, 1998). The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, cluster analysis, t-test, and one-way ANOVA using the SPSS 18.0 software program. The results showed that the clusters of problem behaviors on the PBQ could be grouped into four categories; 'hostility-aggressiveness', 'hyperactivity- distractibility', 'anxiety-fear', and 'combined'. In addition, group differences among the problem behaviors were significantly found in 'play disruption' and 'play disconnection' but not in 'play interaction' of the PIPPS on teachers' and parents' ratings. Specifically, group differences were not found in the parental reports, while significant group differences were noted in the 'play disconnection on PIPPS component of the teachers' reports.

  • This study investigated the moderating effect of negative emotionality on the association between teacher-child intimacy and peer interaction based on a differential susceptibility model. The participants were 252 three-year-old children recruited from a day care center and preschool located in Incheon and Gyeonggi province. The teacher-child relationship was measured on a Student-Teacher Relationship Scale. This measure is a type of teacher's report with ratings based on a teacher's daily observations. This scale is composed of closeness items on the degree of warmth and open communication in teacher-child relationships. Peer interactions were measured with a Penn Interactive Peer Play Scale. This measure is composed of play interaction items, play disruption items and play disconnection. Negative emotionality was measured with Child Behavior Questionnaire. Teachers measured teacher-child intimacy and peer interaction scales. Parents reported children's negative emotionality. The research showed that negative emotionality moderated the association of teacher-child intimacy, play interaction, play isolation and play disruption. The magnitude of association between teacher-child intimacy and play disconnection as well as play interaction was greater for high levels of negative emotionality. Teacher-child intimacy was significantly associated with play disruption only for high levels of negative emotionality. The findings of this study support a differential susceptibility model.

  • This study examined how the relationship between grandmother-adult child solidarity, caregiving satisfaction, and grandmother's child-rearing role varies according to the relation with the grandchild. Mediation effects and moderated mediation effects were analyzed to investigate the relationship between these variables. The participants were 295 grandmothers raising preschool-aged grandchildren in the Seoul and Gyeonggi areas. Data was analyzed using SPSS 23.0 and PROCESS macro, performing correlation analysis and hierarchical regression analysis. The statistical significance of the indirect effect was examined using a bootstrapping procedure. The results are as follows. First, grandmother-adult child solidarity directly affects the grandmother's child-rearing role. Second, grandmother-adult child solidarity indirectly affects the grandmother's child-rearing role through caregiving satisfaction. Third, the direct and indirect effects of grandmother-adult child solidarity on the grandmother's child-rearing role are moderated by the relation with the grandchild. The direct effect of grandmother-adult child solidarity on grandmother's child-rearing role was therefore shown to be significant on the maternal grandmother. Fourth, the indirect effect of grandmother-adult child solidarity on the grandmother's child-rearing role through caregiving satisfaction was shown to be significant on the paternal grandmother. Based on the results of this study, we discussed ways to strengthen the capacity of co-parenting between grandparents and adult children.

  • This study aimed to investigate the association between interest in beauty care and dietary behaviors of 581 (analysis rate 96.0%) high school girls in Incheon using a survey done in May 2019. Based on the degree of interest in beauty care, subjects were classified as "Beauty care group (n=346)", and "Non-beauty care group (n=235)". The mean age of the subjects was 16.5 years old. The beauty care group had significantly lower BMI than the non-beauty care group (p<0.01). The beauty care group showed a significantly higher interest in weight control than the non-beauty care group (p<0.001). The most time-consuming preschool morning activity in the beauty care group was beauty care, while that of the non-beauty care group was eating breakfast (p<0.001). The beauty care group had significantly higher frequency of exercise than the non-beauty care group (p<0.05). The number of individuals who skipped breakfast was significantly higher in the beauty care group. In addition, the beauty care group had a significantly higher frequency of taking morning snack, convenience food (p<0.01), sweet snacks (p<0.05), and processed beverages (p<0.05) than the non-beauty care group. Our result findings provide important information on the priority groups for nutrition education based on beauty care interest.

  • Objective: The purpose of this research was to examine the moderating effect of children's negative emotionality on the relationship between maternal attitude toward children's emotional expression based on the differential susceptibility model. Methods: Participants were 216 preschool children including 116 boys and 100 girls from day care centers and preschools located in Chungchung province and Seoul. EAS was used to measure the children's negative emotionality. The children's empathy quotient was used to measure empathy. Mothers reported their attitude toward children's emotional expression. Results: The results revealed that the association between empathy and maternal suppression of children's emotional expression was significant only for the children with high levels of negative emotionality. Moreover, the magnitude of association between empathy and maternal acceptance of children's emotional expression was greater for high levels of negative emotionality. Conclusion/Implications: It was concluded that these findings supported the differential susceptibility model.
