  • The performance of a residential heating and cooling system with $CO_2$ is predicted by using a cycle simulation model. The simulations are conducted by varying design parameters and operating conditions. The efficiency of the transcritical cycle can be improved by utilizing the advantages in heat transfer characteristics of $CO_2$ and developing microchannel indoor and outdoor heat exchangers. For the designed system of this study, the predicted COP of the heat pump system is approximately 3.5 in the heating mode and 3.0 in the cooling mode. The predicted optimal discharge pressure for the heat pump system is approximately 11 MPa in the heating mode and 9 MPa in the cooling mode.

  • This paper presents a novel predictive digital control method for boundary conduction mode PFC converters without the need for detecting the inductor current. In the proposed method, the inductor current is predicted by analytical equations instead of being detected by a sensing-resistor. The predicted zero-crossing point of the inductor current is determined by the values of the input voltage, output voltage and predicted inductor current. Importantly, the prediction of zero-crossing point is achieved in just a single switching cycle. Therefore, the errors in predictive calculation caused by parameter variations can be compensated. The prediction of the zero-crossing point with the proposed method has been shown to have good accuracy. The proposed method also shows high stability towards variations in both the inductance and output power. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed predictive digital control method for PFC converters.

  • For efficient NDE of pipes, essential components of power plant facilities, ultrasonic guided waves were generated and received applying an air-coupled transducer and comb one as non-contact technology, Mode generation and selection were predicted based on theoretical dispersive curve and the element spaceof a comb transducer. In addition, a receiving angle of the air-coupled transducer was determined to acquire the predicted modes by theoretical phase velocity of each mode. Theoretical dispersive curve was compared with the results of the time-frequency spectroscopes based on the wavelet transform and 2D-FFT to identify the characteristics of the received mode. The received modes show a good agreement with the predicted ones.

  • This study proposes a method of an equivalent bell model in order to tune the beat period of a Korean bell. In a Korean bell having a slight asymmetry, each circumferential mode splits into a mode pair which has a slight difference in frequency, and the interaction of the mode pair makes a beat in vibration and sound. An equivalent bell model which consists of an axi-symmetric bell and an equivalent point mass, has the same mode property as in a real bell. The equivalent bell model is constructed by the finite element analysis based upon the theory of a revolutionary shell Using the equivalent bell model, the beat period is predicted when the bell thickness is locally decreased to improve the beat property. The predicted result is verified by experiment on a test bell. The proposed method is useful to save the time required for tuning the beat period of a large bell.

  • TCM has been used for many environmental impact assessments in Korea. But there was reported that an error was found in area source calculation of original TCM and modified. In this study, TUM(TCM-urban mode) and TRM(TCM-rural mode) were developed for urban and rural area by modification of original TCM. McElroy-Pooler dispersion parameter was used for area and point source in TUM, Pasquill-Gifford parameter was used for area and point source in TRM. And Irwin's vertical wind speed profile exponents were used for TUM and TRM. Then predicted value by TUM, TRM and a value from the same area and point data by CDM2, ISCLT3 were compared. And it was found that predicted value from point source by TUM, TRM was very similar to a value by CDM2, ISCLT3, and predicted value from area source by TRM was similar to a value by CDM2, ISCLT3. But predicted value from area: source by TUM was an half lower than a value by CDM2, ISCLT3.

  • A previous paper(Ito et al., 2000) has described the improvement of the standard error(SEC and SEP) of the predicted soluble solids(Brix) in a melon cultivar by non-contact mode with a fiber optic probe. Then we examined the immature and mature fruits. The objective of this study was to determine if non-contact mode could improve the standard error of the predicted Brix of matured melon fruits from cross progeny as well as the contact mode(usual method). The optical absorption spectrum was measured using a NIR Systems model 6500 spectrophotometer. A commercial spectral program(NSAS ver. 3.27) was used for multiple linear regression analysis. Absorbances of 902 and in the vicinity of 877 nm were included as the independent variables in both multiple regression equations. These wavelengths are key wavelengths for non-destructive Brix determination. When the results for the contact mode and non-contact mode are compared, the latter mode improved the former standard error(SEP and RMS).

  • High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) adopts intra transform skip mode, in which a residual block is directly quantized in the pixel domain without transforming the block into the frequency domain. Intra transform skip mode provides a significant coding gain for screen content. However, when intra-prediction errors are not transformed, the errors are often correlated along the intra-prediction direction. This paper introduces a residual differential pulse code modulation (DPCM) method for the intra-predicted and transform-skipped blocks to remove redundancy. The proposed method performs pixel-by-pixel residual prediction along the intra-prediction direction to reduce the dynamic range of intra-prediction errors. Experimental results show that the transform skip mode's Bjøntegaard delta rate (BD-rate) is improved by 12.8% for vertically intra-predicted blocks. Overall, the proposed method shows an average 1.2% reduction in BD-rate, relative to HEVC, with negligible computational complexity.

  • In this study, beat control method using an equivalent ring model is proposed to control beat period of a slightly asymmetric ring. Slight asymmetry in a ring generates mode pair and the interaction of the mode pair makes beat in vibration and sound. In a ring, as a simplified bell type structure, mode data are measured and an equivalent ring is determined so that the measured mode condition is satisfied. By the finite element analysis on the equivalent ring, changes of mode pair condition are predicted when local mass is attached or the local thickness is decreased. The predicted results are compared with the experimental result and the validity of the proposed method is verified.

  • High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), the latest video coding standard, has twice of the compression efficiency compared to AVC/H.264 under the same image quality condition. To obtain the improved efficiency, however, it was adopted for many methods which need complicated calculation, and the time complexity of HEVC was increased more than that of AVC/H.264. To solve this problem, the various fast algorithms have been researched. In this paper, we propose a fast intra prediction mode decision method which uses result of Rough Mode Decision (RMD) and Most Probable Mode (MPM). The proposed method selects a best predicted mode by comparing each predicted directions which are calculated through RMD and MPM. We applied the proposed method to HM 10.0 and conducted an comparing experiment in All-Intra environment. The experiment result showed that total encoding time is reduced by about 26% on average with about a 0.8% loss of BD-rate.

  • In this paper, we propose a new intra mode coding method using the candidate mode table. In the conventional HEVC, if the predicted most probable mode (MPM) is not same with the current prediction mode, the current prediction mode is encoded using the fixed length code (FLC). However, since a large number of modes are used in HEVC, the codeword length of FLC gets longer. In this paper, we generate the candidate mode table from neighboring blocks and encode the obtained intra mode index using Golomb-Rice code instead of FLC, when the predicted MPM is not identical to the current mode. From the experiment, we verified that the proposed method reduces the BD-rate by 0.5% on average, compared to the HEVC intra mode coding method.
