  • This study validated the factor structure of the indicators for measuring pre-service teachers' science teaching-learning competency and analyzed the effects of simulated teaching practice on these competencies. Furthermore, it used response data from 175 pre-service teachers to verify the factor structure of the science teaching-learning competency indicators, and the data from 73 respondents from three departments to examine the effects of simulated teaching practice. To analyze the factor structure of science teaching-learning competency, the content validity index was calculated by five elementary school teachers, and the principal axis factoring with the Promax rotation and reliability analysis were conducted. Moreover, using, a paired sample t-test, the comparison of science teaching-learning competencies before and after simulated teaching practice was analyzed. The study results are as follows. The science teaching-learning competency indicators were revised and supplemented by 30 items under five factors, with a content validity index of .94. The exploratory factor analysis confirmed that 30 items were loaded onto the intended factors, and the reliability of the indicators was found to be .953 (in the sub-factor .829-.918). The paired sample t-test results revealed significant improvement in the pre-service teachers' science teaching-learning competencies before and after the simulated teaching practice. Furthermore, this study verified the significant effect of the simulated teaching practice on the pre-service teachers' science teaching-learning competencies and explained the need for continued implementation of the simulated teaching practice to reflect the specifics of school teaching in the pre-service teacher education curriculum. Moreover, it suggests the necessity of developing evaluation scales for the observer-rated scale, in addition to the self-report scales, to measure the teaching-learning competencies.

  • It is necessary for the teacher to understand why teach mathematics in order to implement the visions and expectations of the national mathematics curriculum in her actual classroom. This study conducted a survey of examining how elementary school teachers might understand the purpose of teaching mathematics. The results of this study showed that teachers' conceptions of the purpose of teaching mathematics were related mainly to the development of logical thinking, practical use of mathematics in everyday life, and a tool for studying other subjects or disciplines. However, teachers did not perceive much other purposes of mathematics education such as understanding the world, appreciating aesthetic value of mathematics, and developing communicative ability as well as sociality. Whereas teachers did not think of the significance of mathematics as an intellectual field when asked to write down how they would explain students why they had to learn mathematics, they tended to strongly agree it in the Likert-scale responses. Teachers' conceptions were not different according to their gender but teachers with less than five years' teaching experience were relatively negative than others with more experience. Given these results, this study provided issues and implications of teachers' conceptions of the purpose of teaching mathematics.

  • The paradigm of education has changed with the progress of the information and communication technology. In school, there has been developing and animately discussing many data and ways of using web-practicality for teaching and learning. On the other hand, relatively, there are negligent faces about web-practicality for extension of emotion and will of our children. The common points of pre-studies about the increase of self-concept show that it is difficult to join all of the information because the work is off-line, therefore limiting it's advance so that the program is improved. This study has designed and embodied the system of web based self-expression training program. The result of application of this system has showed the positive effect on formation of self-concept of Cheongju elementary school students.

  • Practicality and value of mathematics can be verified when different problems that we face in life are resolved through mathematical knowledge. This study intends to identify whether the fraction teaching is being taught and learned at current elementary schools for students to recognize practicality and value of mathematical knowledge and to have the ability to apply the concept when solving problems in the real world. Accordingly, contextual problems and noncontextual problems are proposed around fractional arithmetic area, and compared and analyze the achievement level and problem solving processes of them. Analysis showed that there was significant difference in achievement level and solving process between contextual problems and noncontextual problems. To instruct more meaningful learning for student, contextual problems including historical context or practical situation should be presented for students to experience mathematics of creating mathematical knowledge on their own.

  • Gu-Jang-San-Sul is a book of Chinese ancient mathematics and has had an impact on Korean mathematics. The book is organized into nine chapters and each chapter is composed of problems, answers, and their computation algorithms. The contents reflect the practicality of Chinese mathematics. Especially the first chapter covers the computation of fractions for land surveying. This paper suggests how the computation methodology is used in teaching fractions for primary school students. Five strategies for fractions related to the reduction, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division are followed by: 1) developing the ability to apply rules to problems by practicing the computation process according to the given algorithm; 2) developing the communication skill by comparing the differences of various computation algorithms; 3) setting computation problems; 4) understanding the characteristics of terminology in mathematics; and 5) being exposed to new ideas in mathematics.

  • This study presents the process and outcomes of developing mathematical-informatics linkage·convergence class materials, based on previous research findings that indicate a lack of such materials in high schools despite the increasing need for development of interdisciplinary linkage·convergence class materials In particular, this research provides insights into the discussions of six teachers who participated in the same professional learning community program, aiming to create materials that are suitable for linkage·convergence class materials and highly practical for classroom implementation. Following the material development process, a theme-based design model was applied to create the materials. In alignment with prior research and consensus among teacher learning community members, mathematics and informatics teachers developed instructional materials that can be utilized together during a 100-minute block lesson. The developed materials utilize societal issue contexts to establish links between the two subjects, enabling students to engage in problem-solving through mathematical modeling and coding. To increase the validity and practicality of the developed resources during their field application, CVR verification was conducted involving field teachers. Incorporating the results of the CVR verification, the finalized instructional materials were presented in the form of a teaching guide. Furthermore, we aimed to provide insights into the trial-and-error experiences and deliberations of the developers throughout the material development process, with the intention of offering valuable information that can serve as a foundation for conducting related research by field researchers. These research findings hold value as empirical evidence that can explore the applicability of teaching material development models in fields. The accumulation of such materials is expected to facilitate a cyclical relationship between theoretical teaching models and practical classroom applications.
