A simple pendulum shows how efficient gravity is in recovering energy. Any transportation is a linearly oscillating system; every load gains kinetic energy, but loses the same to come to a stop. The Gravity Power Towers comprise of a set of vertically moving heavy masses coupled, through microprocessor controlled continuously variable gear and cable system, to a horizontally rolling unit on wheels either on rail or road. The heavy masses move vertically up against gravity gaining potential energy while stopping a moving mass; move down under gravity force, giving out energy. The Tower thus accelerates or sustains the speed a rolling unit, and while decelerating, recover the kinetic energy. Speeds of 360 kmph can be attained. Recovery of energy varies from 98.5-70%; the longer the distance between stops, the lesser is recovery. The economical, omnipresent & eternal Gravity Power grants energy independence to many a nation. Global warming reduces.

Recently, microturbines have received attention as a small-scale distributed power generator. Since the exhaust gas carries all of the heat release, the microturbine CHP (combined heat and power) system is relatively compact and easy to maintain. Generating hot water or steam is usual method of heat recovery from the microturbine. In this work, a heat recovery unit producing hot water was installed at the exhaust side of a 30 kW class microturbine and its performance characteristics following microturbine power variation was investigated. Heat recovery performance has been compared for different operating conditions such as constant hot water temperature and constant water flow rate. In particular, the influence of water flow rate and hot water temperature on the recovered heat was analyzed.
The presence of induction motor loads in a power system may cause the phenomenon of delayed voltage recovery after the occurrence of a severe fault. A high proportion of induction motor loads in the power system can be a significant influence on the voltage stability of the system. This problem referred to as FIDVR(Fault Induced Delayed Voltage Recovery) is commonly caused by stall of small HVAC unit(Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioner) after transmission or distribution system failure. This delayed voltage recovery arises from the dynamic characteristics associated with the kinetic energy of the induction motor load. This paper proposes the UVLS (Under Voltage Load Shedding) control strategy for dealing with FIDVR. UVLS based schemes prevent voltage instability by shedding the load and can help avoid major economic losses due to wide-ranging cascading outages. This paper review recent topic about under voltage load shedding and compare decentralized load shedding scheme with conventional load shedding scheme. The load shedding strategy is applied to an actual system in order to verify the proposed FIDVR mitigation solution. Simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in resolving the problem of delayed voltage recovery in the Korean Power System.

Transmission line is exposed to a large area, and then faults are likely to occur than the other component of power system. When a fault occurs on a transmission line, fault locator helps fast recovery of power supply on power system. This paper deals with the design of a digital fault locator for improvement accuracy of the fault distance estimation and a fault occurrence position for transmission line. The algorithm of a fault locator uses a DC offset removal filter and DFT filter. The algorithm utilizes a fault data of GPS time synchronized. The computed fault information is transmitted to the other side substation through communication. The digital fault locator includes MPU module, ADPU module, SIU module, and a power module. The MMI firmware and software of the fault locator was implemented.
In this study, a novel hydraulic energy-regenerative system was presented from its proposal through its modeling to its control. The system was based on a closed-loop hydrostatic transmission and used a hydraulic accumulator as the energy storage system in a novel configuration to recover the kinetic energy without any reversion of the fluid flow. The displacement variation in the secondary unit was reduced, which widened the uses of several types of hydraulic pump/motors for the secondary unit. The proposed system was modeled based on its physical attributes. Simulation and experiments were performed to evaluate the validity of the employed mathematical model and the energy recovery potential of the system. The experimental results indicated that the round trip recovery efficiency varied from 22% to 59% for the test bench.
In this paper, we proposed a burst mode symbol timing recovery unit that is applicable to the VDL Mode-2 using D8PSK modulation. A method that IIR loop filter is used to minimize symbol timing error is hard to apply to burst mode because its convergence time is long. That is, the fast convergence property is important. In this paper, the proposed method takes one sample which has maximum symbol power after the initial synchronization has been achieved by using preambles. The main principle of operation is that the unit moves one sample clock to advance or retard according to symbol power. We verify that the proposed method is operated well in ${\pm}100$ ppm or greater through the test results between Australia ADS Corp. transmitter and the designed receiver.
As a part of the government renewable energy policy, KOWEPO is constructing 300MW IGCC plant in Taean. IGCC plant consists of gasification block, air separation unit and power block, which performance test is separately conducted. Overall performance test for IGCC plant is peformed to comply with ASME PTC 46. Major factors affected on the overall efficiency for IGCC plant are external conditions, each block performance(gasification, ASU, power block), water/steam integration and air integration. Performance parameters of IGCC plant are cold gas efficiency, oxygen consumption, sensible heat recovery of syngas cooler for gasification block and purity of oxygen, flow amount of oxygen and nitrogen, power consumption for air separation unit and steam/water integration among the each block. The gas turbine capacity applied to the IGCC plant is 20 percent higher than NGCC gas turbine due to the low caloric heating value of syngas, therefor it is possible to utilize air integration between gas turbine and air separation unit to improve overall efficiency of the IGCC plant and there is a little impact on the ambient condition. It is very important to optimize the air integration design with consideration to the optimized integration ratio and the reliable operation. Optimized steam/water integration between power block and gasification block can improve overall efficiency of IGCC plant where the optimized heat recovery from gasification block should be considered. Finally, It is possibile to achieve the target efficiency above 42 percent(HHV, Net) for 300MW Taean IGCC plant by optimized design and integration.

In a traditional hydraulic elevator, elevator car is descended by down control valve, and the oil hydraulic energy must be lost during the descending stroke. In this paper, the performance characteristics of the hybrid type energy saving unit, is used to save the hydraulic energy which is lost during the descending stroke, for a hydraulic elevator are studied. The energy can be reused as the auxiliary power. The results show that the performance characteristics, such as the pressure, flow rate, output current and voltage, efficiency, and the energy recovery rate of the unit are stable and good as the energy recovery rate is 54%, and the energy saving unit is useful to reuse the saved energy during the descending stroke of elevator car. Also, it was confirmed that the energy saving unit can be deployed on a commercial scale.

This paper describes a load simulator with power recovery capability, which is based on the voltage source converter-inverter set. The load simulator can save the electric energy that should be consumed to test the operation and performance of the power quality compensator and the power equipment. The load simulator consists of a converter-inverter set with a DSP controller for system control and PWM pulse generation. The converter operates as a universal load to model the linear load and the non-linear load, while the inverter feed the energy back to the power source with harmonic compensation. the performance of proposed load simulator was analyzed with scaled-model experiment, interconnected with the active power filter. The experimental results confirms that the proposed load simulator can be utilized to test the performance of active power filter.

In this paper, we studied the control strategy of applying STATCOM(static synchronous compensator) to mitigate the FIDVR(fault induced delayed voltage recovery) phenomenon. The proportion of motor loads is gradually increasing which might affect power system stability. Excessive reactive power consumption by the stall of the motor loads causes FIDVR phenomenon. In addition, the low inertia of the small HVAC(heating, ventilation and air conditioner) unit will not separate itself in the event of a contingency, causing system instability. For this reason, we have developed a control strategy that utilizes STATCOM efficiently through static and dynamic analysis. Case studies on a Korean power system have validated the performance of the proposed scheme under severe contingency scenarios. The results have verified that the proposed strategy can effectively mitigate FIDVR and improve the stability and reliability of the system.
