Ab Initio Study of Complexation of Alkali Metal Ions with Alkyl Esters of p-tert-Butylcalix[4]arene

  • The complexation characteristics of tetramethyl (1) and tetraethyl esters (2) of p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene with alkali metal cations have been investigated by ab initio calculation. The structures of endo- or exocomplexation of the hosts in cone conformation with alkali metal ions have been optimized using HF/6-31G method followed by B3LYP/6-31G(d) single point calculation. B3LYP/6-31G(d) calculations suggest that exo-complexation efficiencies of sodium ion to the cavity of lower rim of hosts 1 and 2 are 27.1 and 25.8 kcal/mol better than that of potassium ion, respectively. The exo-complexation efficiencies of potassium ion to the cavity of lower rim of hosts 1 and 2 are 33.3 and 31.5 kcal/mol better than the endo-complexation inside the upper rim (four aromatic rings) as expected from the experimental results. B3LYP/6-31G(d) calculation of the ethyl ester 2 shows 29.5 and 30.8 kcal/mol better exo-complexation efficiency for both sodium and potassium ions than the methyl ester 1.

  • To swimming motor neurons (SMNs) of Polyorchis penicillatus, a hydrozoan medusae, dopamine (DA) acts as an inhibitory neurotransmitter by hyperpolarizing its membrane potential and decreasing its firing rate as well. Such an inhibitory action of DA is caused by an increased permeability to potassium (K) ions. To investigate whether voltage-gated K channels are directly responsible for the membrane hyperpolarization induced by DA, we employed whole-cell voltage clamp configuration. One ${\mu}M$ DA applied to SMNs increased the peak and rear values of voltage-gated K currents by 37 and 54%, respectively, in a reversible manner. Combined with subtraction analysis, this result suggests that the outflux of K ions by DA in SMNs occurs mainly through rectifier-like K channels.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the applicability of PVC membrane-based ion-selective electrodes for macronutrients (K, Ca, and N) by measuring of potassium, calcium, nitrate ions in hydroponic nutrient solution. The capabilities of two ion-selective membranes with varying chemical compositions for each ion were evaluated in terms of sensitivity, selectivity, and lifetime to choose sensing elements suitable for measuring typical ranges of nutrient concentrations in hydroponic solutions. The selected calcium and nitrate ion-selective membranes showed effectively sensitive responses to calcium and nitrate ions with lifetimes of 25 and 15 days, respectively. The addition of a cation additive to the potassium membrane cocktail allowed its sensitivity to be increased whereas its lifetime was reduced from 30 days to 10 days.

  • In large generators in power plants, stator winding insulations is exposed to a combination of thermal, electrical, mechanical, environmental stresses in service. These combined stresses cause insulation aging which leads to final insulation breakdown. In order to identify the breakdown mechanism, the stator winding insulation materials which are composed of mica-epoxy is analyzed by the component of materials with EDS, SEM techniques. We concluded that the potassium ions of mica are replaced by hydrogen ions at boundary area of mica-epoxy and/or mica-mica. It is proposed that through these phenomena, the conductive layers of potassium ions enable high voltage fields of multiple stresses to create voids and microcracks.

Equilibrium Removal of Pb (II) Ions from Aqueous Solution onto Oxidized-KOH-Activated Carbons

  • In the present study, the removal of Pb (II) ions on oxidized activated carbons (ACs) was investigated. ACs were derived from activation of indigenous cotton stalks waste with potassium hydroxide (KOH) in two-stage process. The KOH-ACs were subjected to liquid-phase oxidation with hot $HNO_3$ and one untreated sample was included for comparison. The obtained carbons were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), slurry pH and $N_2$-adsorption at 77 K, respectively. Adsorption capacity of Pb (II) ions on the resultant carbons was determined by batch equilibrium experiments. The experimental results indicated that the oxidation with nitric acid was associated with a significant increase in mass of yield as well as a remarkable reduction in internal porosity as compared to the untreated carbon. The AC-800N revealed higher adsorption capacity than that of AC-800, although the former sample exhibited low surface area and micropore volume. It was observed that the adsorption capacity enhancement attributed to pore widening, the generation of oxygen functional groups and potassium containing compounds leading to cation-exchange on the carbon surface. These results show that the oxidized carbons represented prospective adsorbents for enhancing the removal of heavy metals from wastewater.

Removal Characteristics of Strontium and Cesium tons by Zeolite Synthesized from Fly Ash (석탄회로 합성한 제올라이트에 의한 Sr(II) 및 Cs(I) 이온의 제거 특성)

  • The adsorption behaviors of strontium and cesium ions on fly ash, natural zeolites, and zeolites synthesized from fly ash were investigated. The zeolites synthesized from fly ash had greater adsorption capabilities for strontium and cesium ions than the original fly ash and natural zeolites. The maximum adsorption capacity of synthetic zeolite for strontium and cesium ions was 100 and 154 mg/g, respectively, It was found that the Freundlich isotherm model could fit the adsorption isotherm. The distribution coefficients (K$\_$d/) for strontium and cesium ions were also calculated from the adsorption isotherm data, The distribution coefficients decreased with increasing equilibrium concentration of strontium and cesium ions in solution. By studying the removal of cesium and strontium ions in the presence of calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, sulfate, nitrate, nitrite, and EDTA (in the range of 0.01 - 5 mM) it was found that these coexistence ions competed for the same adsorption sites with strontium and cesium ions.

  • $\beta$-C2S and C4A3 were synthesized separately and potassium oxalate was added to each system. The ad-ditive caused calcium ions in solution to decrease at early time in hydration and promoted hydration reac-tion. And then clinker which is mainly composed of $\beta$-C2S and C4A3 was synthesized at 130$0^{\circ}C$ After ad-ding potassium oxalate to it behavior of hydration was observed. It showed that the additive promoted et-tringtie formation at early time and C-S-H formation as time went on.

  • The experimental results using the X -ray technique, the position and structure of mica crystal are not observed the phase change of aging and sound specimen respectively. However, We could observe the intensity difference of crystal element in both atmospheres. The analysis of mica-epoxy materials by optical microscope are shown that the each surface of sound and aging specimens are different in both atmospheres Also, the experimental results have shown that the potassium ions of mica cristal are substituted by hydrogen ions at boundary area of mica-epoxy and/or mica-mica. On components made of mica, a potassium ion of big atomic radius, is replaced by hydrogen ion of small atomic radius. The voids are created by the difference of radius progressed by combined stresses. Through these phenomena, it has been proposed that the conductive layers made of potassium enable the voids to form and the cracks to create by high electric field.

Growth and Characteristic Infrared Raman Spectra of Potassium Lithium Niobate Single Crystals

  • Homogeneous and crack-free potassium lithium niobate (K₃Li/sub 2-x/Nb/sub 5+x/O/sub 15/, 0<x<0.5, KLN) single crystals were successfully grown by the Czochralski technique. The KLN single crystals of several different compositions were employed for the investigation of the lattice vibration spectra using infrared Raman spectroscopy. The characteristic Raman spectra of the [NbO/sub 6/]/sup 7-/ octahedral ions were strikingly influenced by the Li ion content. The symmetric stretch vibrational modes V₁, V₂ are broadened, and the symmetric bend vibration mode V/sub 5/ is broadened and even split into three peaks with increasing the Li content, supporting that the bend vibration modes of the [NbO/sub 6/]/sup 7-/ octahedrons are obviously perturbed by Li ions in the C site. Enhanced Raman peak intensities after the post annealing at 900℃ and for 24 h evidenced that a residual stress in as-grown crystals was negligible and only a defect concentration might be reduced.

  • Effect of potassium formate, glycine and oxalic acid in a sulfate solution on the deposit composition and current efficiency of trivalent chromium plating was studied. The trivalent chromium layers prepared by solutions with potassium formate, glycine and oxalic acid contain a few carbon inside. The solutions containing potassium formate, glycine and oxalic acid are relatively stable with pH change. The solution with the potassium formate shows 6-30% current efficiency with current density, whereas, the solutions with oxalic acid and glycine show about 5% current efficiency, respectively. The improved current efficiency is related to enough supply of chromium ions to the electrode due to the increase of pH at the front of electrode.
