Seismic Landslide Hazard Maps in Ul-Ju Ul-san Korea (지진에 대한 사면의 재해위험지도 작성 - 울산시 울주군 지역을 중심으로-)

  • Landslide damage comprise most part of the damages from the earthquake and it only causes the damage to lives and structures directly but also cease the operation of social system by road or lifeline failure. For these reasons hazard assesment on the landslides has been recognized very important. And hazard maps have been used to visualize the hazard of the landslide. In this study as first step for application of hazard map to domestic cases hazard maps are made for the Ul-Joo Ul-san Korea, Where the Yan-san faults are located. For building hazard maps the degree of hazard are evaluated based on Newmark displacement and the resulting maps are constructed by GIS technique. In hazard assesment maximum ground acceleration obtained from attenuation equation of wave propagation and design earthquake acceleration suggested by Ministry of construction are used for acceleration term. Hazard maps are made by GIS programs Arc/Info and Arc/View based on the digital maps and data from lab tests and elastic wave surveys The maps show the possible landslide regions significantly and the displacements of slide are proportional to the slope angles.

Factors that Impact Construction Workers' Hazard Recognition Ability and their Technological Solutions

  • Hazard recognition is considered as one of the pre-requisites for effective hazard management and injury prevention. However, in complex and changing environments, construction workers are often unable to identify all possible hazards that can occur in the jobsite. Therefore, identification of factors that impact hazard recognition in the work environment is necessary to reduce safety incidents as well as to develop strategies that can improve worker's hazard recognition performance. This study identified factors/problems that impact worker's hazard recognition abilities and suggested some potential technologies that can mitigate such problems. Literature reviews of journal articles and published reports related to hazard recognition studies were conducted to identify the factors. The study found out that the major factor responsible for affecting worker's hazard recognition abilities were human-related. Industry factors, Organizational factors and Physical factors of the site were the other factors identified from the study that impact worker's hazard recognition performances. The findings from the study can help site personnel recognize areas where effective measures can be directed towards worksite safety of workers while working in complex construction environments.

Determination of THRs - A Practical Approach for Manufacturers According to EN50129

  • The paper will outline how hazard identification and risk evaluation can effectively be performed to obtain Tolerable Hazard Rates (THR). As a target group manufacturers are addressed, who face the situation, that for a generic application THRs are needed for compliance with EN 50129 [1]. Focusing on functional hazards this paper shows a possible hazard log and the relevant analysis methods. The terms safety barrier and barrier function will be introduced and used instead of the term "safety function". As functional hazards and barrier functions depend on each other, emphasis will be put on a comprehensive and detailed definition of barrier functions and the usage of function lists. By using detailed and complete hazard and barrier function definitions THRs can be obtained while at the same time the approach becomes clear how the hazard rates (HR) will be established.

  • Debris flows are a natural hazard which looks like a combination of flood, land and rock slide. Large rainfall in July 2006 produced several large scale debris flows and many small debris flows that resulted in loss of life and considerable property and railway damage, as was widely reported in the national media. The hazard "debris flow" is still insufficiently researched. Furthermore debris flows are very hard to predict. Flexible Ring net barriers are multi-functional mitigation devices commonly applied to rock fall or floating wood protection in floods, snow avalanches and also mud flows or granular debris flows, if properly dimensioned for the process or processes for which they are intended. Overtopping of the barriers by debris flows and sediment transport is possible, supporting the design concept that a series of barriers may be used to stop volumes of debris larger than are possible using only one barrier. The future for these barrier concepts looks promising because these barriers represent the state of art for such applications and are superior to many other available options.

  • The road construction with horizontal expansion of country using and augmentation of traffic demand is advanced actively and it accompanies hereupon, the above of 70% of the country is formed at the mountain in our country where the hazard cut slope has been created. In this study, It is prepared a effective management countermeasure of cut slope introduced priority investigation decision method against hazard cut slope which is influenced by abnormally rainfall by an unusual change in the weather such as a guerilla rainfall character. In meaning link, It was executed collapse cause by failure character analysis in the cut slope which has failed for the last five years and it is prepared the hazard grade criterion from E to A grade according to collapse cause. It is decided that a maintenance management grade by the hazard grade classification criterion of cut slope. So It is possible to hazard cut slope. It is established failure protection counter countermeasure by effective maintenance management through the hazard grade c1assification criterion and it will be able to dispose to advanced nation level like Hong Kong and Japanese.

  • The probabilistic seismic hazard analysis for engineering needs several active fault parameters as input data. Fault slip rates, the segmentation model for each fault, and the date of the most recent large earthquake in seismic hazard analysis are the critical pieces of information required to characterize behavior of the faults. Slip rates provide a basis for calculating earthquake recurrence intervals. Segmentation models define potential rupture lengths and are inputs to earthquake magnitude. The most recent event is used in time-dependent probability calculations. These data were assembled by expert source-characterization groups consisting of geologists, geophysicists, and seismologists evaluating the information available for earth fault. The procedures to prepare inputs for seismic hazard are illustrated with possible segmentation scenarios of capable fault models and the seismic hazards are evaluated to see the implication of considering capable faults models.

Design and Implementation of Vehicle Hazard Lamp Automatic Operation System Using Acceleration Sensor

  • In order to prevent a collision accident during sudden braking, we have proposed an hazard lamps automatic operation system that can be easily installed in existing vehicles that do not have hazard lamps automatic operation. There are several ways to recognize sudden braking. Using GPS, the system does not work in a tunnel, and it is difficult to install the system additionally on an existing vehicle using a vehicle speed sensor. Therefore, the proposed system eliminates these problems by using the acceleration sensor and makes it possible to recognize even the sudden turning and bounce of the vehicle.

  • Recently, development of IT technology and enhancement of spatial information technology increases the necessity about effective technology of damage investigation in the area of disaster prevention. Quick damage investigation is necessary to deal with the natural hazard and plan the recovery. To do this, UAV is the useful mean for quick damage investigation. In this study, it was evaluated based on UAV that utilization of real-time aerial monitoring system for effective damage investigation of natural hazard. Accuracy analysis was implemented to evaluate the application of this system. And utilization of damage investigation was evaluated based on the domestic regulations that is appled the system according to the type of hazard. As a result, damage investigation was possible about house, farmland, agriculture and forestry facilities and public facilities. Henceforth, it will be effectively possible to inspect damage for natural disaster and to establish restoration plan through utilization of acceptable image data by Real-time Aerial Monitoring System in real various natural disaster.

Early warning of hazard for pipelines by acoustic recognition using principal component analysis and one-class support vector machines

  • This paper proposes a method for early warning of hazard for pipelines. Many pipelines transport dangerous contents so that any damage incurred might lead to catastrophic consequences. However, most of these damages are usually a result of surrounding third-party activities, mainly the constructions. In order to prevent accidents and disasters, detection of potential hazards from third-party activities is indispensable. This paper focuses on recognizing the running of construction machines because they indicate the activity of the constructions. Acoustic information is applied for the recognition and a novel pipeline monitoring approach is proposed. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is applied. The obtained Eigenvalues are regarded as the special signature and thus used for building feature vectors. One-class Support Vector Machine (SVM) is used for the classifier. The denoising ability of PCA can make it robust to noise interference, while the powerful classifying ability of SVM can provide good recognition results. Some related issues such as standardization are also studied and discussed. On-site experiments are conducted and results prove the effectiveness of the proposed early warning method. Thus the possible hazards can be prevented and the integrity of pipelines can be ensured.

  • Today's software systems are becoming larger and more complicated, and the risk of accidents and failures have also grown larger. Software failures and accidents in industrial fields such as automobiles, nuclear power plants, railroad industries, etc. may lead to severe damage of property and human life. The safety-related international standards, such as IEC 61508 have been established and applied to industries for decades. The safety life cycle specified in the standards emphasize the activities to develop safety requirements through hazard and risk analysis in the early stage of software development. In this paper, we propose 'Hazard Analysis Process based on STPA using SysML' in order to ensure the safety of software at the early stage of software development. The proposed hazard analysis can be effectively performed minimizing the loss of hazard by using the BDD and the IBD of SysML to define the control structure of a system. The proposed method also improves the specification of the safety constraints(requirement) by using SD. As a result, it is possible to identify the hazard without missing and identify the hazard scenarios in detail, and safety can be sufficiently ensured in the early stage of software development.
