  • International trade is becoming more and more important in this age of globalization. In particular, It is very important to export for South Korea economy. An important factor in export performance is logistics firms' competitiveness and resources. Nevertheless, many scholars and researchers are overlooking the role of logistics firms in the export market. Most studies have focused only on the capability of export companies without considering the capacity of logistics companies. This paper is attempted to analyze the competitiveness of logistics which affect export performance. So this study adopts the moderated regression analysis. The results analysis shows that logistics firms' resource level were statistically significant on export performance. The moderating effect of logistics firms' resource level was found in the relationship between export performance and international orientation. Lastly, the moderating effect of the logistics services level on the relationship between export firms capacity and export performance was statically significant.

  • The aim of this paper is to make projection of the demand for export loaded container throughput originating at Incheon port in Korea over the period in question. Systematic analysis is used as a forecasting method instead of quantitative analysis. First of all, the method explores coincident indicators which may reflect the square measure of neighboring industrial complexes which originate/destinate general cargo in export traffic trends. It is noted that in terms of the export loaded container throughput, per unit production scale is intermediated transforming from square measure of production facilities to freight weight in Korea. Consequently, the future progress of the volume can be anticipated relying on the development schemes for developing square measure out of the total square of the industrial complexes. Thus, moving-into percentage of the industrial complexes, percentage of business categories, percentage of capacity and percentage of passing through via Incheon port are adopted and the future traffic demand is projected taking advantage of them.

  • This study suggests a gateway strategy for transporting agri-food exports to expand exports after examining the patterns of Korean agri-food exports by commodities and the role of export gateways. Korean agri-food exports have increased, but processed food exports have increased significantly compared to fresh agricultural products during the last 17 years. More importantly, Busan port is the main agri-food export hub in Korea. Under these circumstances, this paper examines the determinants of processed cereal-based food (HS 19) exports through Busan port using classification and regression tree (CART) analysis. As a result, the main factors that help to predict the real value of Korean exports are the GDP of the export destination countries, their distances from Korea and their GNI per capita. The destinations of Korean agri-food exports are finally classified into eight groups, which reveals the characteristics of clusters and provides useful insights for the strategies to expand agri-food exports.

  • In this paper, we investigate the selection of transport route for import-export container cargo based on the sacrifice model and environmental cost of transport route. At first, the sacrifice model, environmental cost of transport, the volumes and the transport share of import-export container cargo are investigated briefly. And next, the transport time and cost, the environmental cost which is caused by cargo transport are investigated for the transport of import-export container cargo from Busan Port to Seoul. And also we calculate the sacrifice of each route by using the sacrifice model including the environmental cost. Finally we decide the transport route of import-export container cargo by using the sacrifice of each transport route. From the research results, we confirm that the road transport share decreases and the coastal transport share increases when the environmental coast of transport is considered.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the trend of export growth rate and rate of change by each port/airport in Korea. And to analyze which each port/airport are showing a high growth rate. To this end, Incheon Airport, Busan, Incheon, Ulsan, Gwangyang and Pyeongtaek were selected in order of export value. The analysis period for each port/airport was 200 monthly data from September 2001 to April 2018. Pyeongtaek, Incheon and Gwangyang are relatively larger than Busan and Ulsan in the rate of increase and change. This is because export to China and Southeast Asia has increased more than in the US and Japan. As a result of the analysis, exports from Busan, Incheon Airport and Ulsan have recently been shifted to Incheon Airport, Incheon, Gwangyang and Pyeongtaek. In addition, the export portion of Incheon International Airport, which is an aviation logistics service, is growing more and more. In the west coast era, interest and investment in Incheon, Pyeongtaek and Gwangyang seem to be more needed in preparation for import and export to China, Southeast Asia and North Korea.

  • This study aims to grasp the hierarchy in the influence areas of port by the intensity of freight shipments and to seek the activating methods for the increase of export and import volumes of Pyeongtaek and Dangjin port. Pyeongtaek and Dangjin port whose major import and export freights are natural gas and automobile, were constructed for the increasing trade with People's Republic of China. This port is expanding the influence in the hinterland and foreland of the port, but core influence area of Pyeongtaek and Dangjin port is rich in trade volume within the radius of 70km. To become international as well as national ports, Pyeongtaek and Dangjin is required to execute the active policy to receive many-sideness of sea route and the recognition of freight holders, forwarders and ship companies in many regions.

  • The direct investment and export of Korean companies has increased to Russia. Korea and China have mostly accounted for the Russian far eastern port of import and export cargo since 2000, and the share of container volume from Vostochny port in 2009 was Korea(71%), China(26%) and Japan(3%) each countries. Like above mentioned, The development in TSR transportation has a huge significance in the position of Korea because Korea is actively utilizing TSR(Trans Siberian Railway) transportation. Therefore, this paper is to examine the development and prospects in Trans Siberian Railway transportation.

  • The standard GARCH model imposing symmetry on the conditional variance, tends to fail in capturing some important features of the data. This paper, hence, introduces the models capturing asymmetric effect. They are the EGARCH model and the GJR model. We provide the systematic comparison of volatility models focusing on the asymmetric effect of news on volatility. Specifically, three diagnostic tests are provided: the sign bias test, the negative size bias test, and the positive size bias test. This paper shows that there is significant evidence of GARCH-type process in the data, as shown by the test for the Ljung-Box Q statistic on the squared residual data. The estimated unconditional density function for squared residual is clearly skewed to the left and markedly leptokurtic when compared with the standard normal distribution. The observation of volatility clustering is also clearly reinforced by the plot of the squared value of residuals of export volume and values. The unconditional variance of both export volumes and export value indicates that large shocks of either sign tend to be followed by large shocks, and small shocks of either sign tend to follow small shocks. The estimated export volume news impact curve for the GARCH also suggests that $h_t$ is overestimated for large negative and positive shocks. The conditional variance equation of the GARCH model for export volumes contains two parameters ${\alpha}$ and ${\beta}$ that are insignificant, indicating that the GARCH model is a poor characterization of the conditional variance of export volumes. The conditional variance equation of the EGARCH model for export value, however, shows a positive sign of parameter ${\delta}$, which is contrary to our expectation, while the GJR model exhibits that parameters ${\alpha}$ and ${\beta}$ are insignificant, and ${\delta}$ is marginally significant. That indicates that the asymmetric volatility models are poor characterization of the conditional variance of export value. It is concluded that the asymmetric EGARCH and GJR model are appropriate in explaining the volatility of export volume, while the symmetric standard GARCH model is good for capturing the volatility.

  • This study examined the impact of geopolitical risk on port throughput in Korea. With a high trade-to-GDP ratio, Korea has an open economy. The vast majority of its exports and imports are serviced by maritime transport. Therefore, cargo volume of Korean seaports is highly likely to be affected by changes in global economy resulting from escalation in geopolitical risk. In this regard, this study investigated the relationship between geopolitical risk and port throughput in Korea during the period of 1995-2022. Results indicated that the impact of geopolitical risk on port throughput was not statistically significant. However, the relationship varied by export, import, and ports. Especially, it was revealed that cargo volume of Korean ports was negatively associated with the level of geopolitical risk. In addition, it was also found that geopolitical risk had a negative impact on the unit price of Korean import..
