A rapid and simple RT-PCR diagnosis method for detection of Rice stripe virus (RSV), one of major virus infecting rice, was developed using porous ceramic cubes in this study. The porous ceramic cube can rapidly absorb biological molecules such as small-sized proteins and nucleic acid fragments into its pores. We examined whether this ability of porous ceramic cubes could be applied for isolating viral nucleic acids or particles from the RSV- infected plant tissues. In this study, we found that the porous ceramic cube was capable of absorbing a detection level of viruses from the rice tissues infected with RSV and established RT-PCR-based RNA diagnosis method using porous ceramic cubes.
A porous material with a surface layer was fabricated from glass abrasive sludge and expanding agents. The glass abrasive sludges were mixed with expanding agents and compacted into precursors. These precursors were sintered in the range of $700-900^{\circ}C$ for 20 min. The sintered porous materials had a surface layer with smaller pores and inner parts with larger pores. The surface layer and closed pores controlled water absorption. As the expanding agent fraction and the sintering temperature increased, the porosity and pore size increased. The porous materials with $Fe_2O_3$ and graphite as the expanding agents had a low absorption ratio of about 3% or lower while the porous material with $CaCO_3$ as the expanding agent had a higher absorption ratio and more open pores.
This work reported the preparation and evaluation of a freshness-keeping film prepared by composite of a porous ceramic material such as vermiculite and polyethylene polymer. The ceramic material was pretreated physically and chemically to control the specific surface areas and particle size. A high content master-batch was prepared using the pretreated vermiculite. The master-batch, which contained 30% ceramic material, was mixed with a polymer material to prepare a film containing 3% vermiculite. The oxygen permeability and various physicochemical properties were evaluated for the prepared films. Compared to plain polyethylene film, the vermiculite loaded polyethylene film has a freshness maintenance property, indicating the creation of an improved film.

Active clays, Diatomite, bentonite and zeolite were used as porous materials for fabricating hygroscopic gypsum boards. Pohang active clay and Cheolwon diatomite showed excellent characteristics of moisture adsorption and desorption. These characteristics were caused by higher surface area and pore volume of porous materials. Moisture adsorption content of gypsum board with 10% active clay(P1) was 62.0 g/m$^2$, and moisture desorption content was 50.2 g/m$^2$. Moisture adsorption content of gypsum board with 10% diatomite(P) was 59.5 g/m$^2$, and moisture desorption content was 49.0 g/m$^2$. Moisture adsorption contents of gypsum boards with porous materials were higher than that moisture desorption contents of gypsum board without porous materials. Correlation coefficient between surface area and moisture adsorption content of gypsum boards was 0.98. Also, correlation coefficient between surface area and moisture desorption content of gypsum boards was 0.97. Moisture adsorption and desorption contents were influenced by surface area and pore volume of the gypsum boards, and surface area had a larger effect on moisture adsorption and desorption.

The low-temperature preparation of porous ceramics was carried out using mixtures of alumina-zinc borosilicate (ZBS) glass. The compositions of alumina-ZBS glass mixture with PMMA pore-former were unfortunately densified. Because PMMA was evaporated below the softening point of ZBS glass ($588{^{\circ}C}$), the densification through the pore-filling caused by the capillary force might occur. Howerver, those with carbon possessed pores where carbon was evaporated above the softening point. The porous ceramic having 35% porosity was successively fabricated by the low-temperature sintering process below $900{^{\circ}C}$ using 45 vol% of alumina, 45 vol% ZBS of glass, and 10 vol% of carbon as starting materials.

Porous ceramics are used in various industrial applications based on their physical properties, including isolation, storage, and thermal barrier properties. However, traditional manufacturing environments require additional steps to control artificial pores and limit deformities, because they rely on limited molding methods. To overcome this drawback, many studies have recently focused on fabricating porous structures using additive manufacturing techniques. In particular, the binder jet technology enables high porosity and various types of designs, and avoids the limitations of existing manufacturing processes. In this study, we investigated process optimization for manufacturing porous ceramic filters using the binder jet technology. In binder jet technology, the flowability of the powder used as the base material is an important factor, as well as compatibility with the binder in the process and for the final print. Flow agents and secondary binders were used to optimize the flowability and compatibility of the powders. In addition, the effects of the amount of added glass frit, and changes in sintering temperature on the microstructure, porosity and mechanical properties of the final printed product were investigated.

Ceramic powder, such as MgO, is added as a binder to prepare the green compacts of molten salts of an electrolyte for a thermal battery. Despite the addition of a binder, when the thickness of the electrolyte decreases to improve the battery performance, the problem with the unintentional short circuit between the anode and cathode still remains. To improve the current powder molding method, a new type of electrolyte separator with porous MgO preforms is prepared and characteristics of the thermal battery are evaluated. A Spherical PMMA polymer powder is added as a pore-forming agent in the MgO powder, and an organic binder is used to prepare slurry appropriate for tape casting. A porous MgO preform with $300{\mu}m$ thickness is prepared through a binder burnout and sintering process. The particle size of the starting MgO powder has an effect, not on the porosity of the porous MgO preform, but on the battery characteristics. The porosity of the porous MgO preforms is controlled from 60 to 75% using a pore-forming agent. The batteries prepared using various porosities of preforms show a performance equal to or higher than that of the pellet-shaped battery prepared by the conventional powder molding method.
It is well known that the degradation of transformer oil conseqently lead to the failure of transformer. This paper discussed the characteristics of the degradation sensor checking transformer oil condition in live line. The degadation sensor is composed of base ring, electrodes and porous ceramic, passed through the transformer oil and checks the transformer oil condition through sensor's leakage current. So it is important to minimize the leakage current of base ring and connection parts. To investigate the leakage current of base ring and connection parts the characteristics of V-T-I and DC 2 KV and other examinations were performed. It is verified that ionized transformer oil caused by the expansion of temperature increases in the leakage current of porous ceramic sensor. It is certification that the leakage current of other parts of porous ceramic is very small(about 2%) compared with the porous ceramic body and it is confirmed that the leakage current in porous ceramic is changed sensitively according to the new oil(NO) and and the degradation oil(DO).

A low temperature processing route for fabricating porous SiC ceramics by carbothermal reduction has been demonstrated. Effects of expandable microsphere content, sintering temperature, filler content, and carbon source on microstructure, porosity, compressive strength, cell size, and cell density were investigated in the processing of porous silicon carbide ceramics using expandable microspheres as a pore former. A higher microsphere content led to a higher porosity and a higher cell density. A higher sintering temperature resulted in a decreased porosity because of an enhanced densification. The addition of inert filler increased the porosity, but decreased the cell density. The compressive strength of the porous ceramics decreased with increasing the porosity. Typical compressive strength of porous SiC ceramics with ${\sim}70%$ porosity was ${\sim}13 MPa$.
