  • The semiconductor chips or electronic components generate heat, which causes malfunction of the parts when it was not cooled properly. Bulky heat sink and cooling fan are used to get rid of the heat. However, with this bulky system, it is hard to integrate the electronics system in a small scale. The cooling efficiency of the system depends on the surface area of the heat sink, thermal conductivity of the material and the method of integration. In order to develop a novel cooling system, a micro-heatsink with a large surface area while retaining small volume was fabricated by electroless deposition of gold/copper inside a Track-etched membrane. The structure of the micro-heatsink was investigated using SEM or optical microscope. It was also found that the micro-heatsink is more efficient than a flat copper plate.

  • Consolidation settlements on soft clay are often large and potentially damaging to structures. Currently, large-scale projects are in progress in Korea. These structures will be constructed on both thick and soft clay layers, and so the accurate evaluation of magnitude of settlement is required at every step in design and construction. Especially, secondary compression play an important role in consolidation settlements on soft clay. Generally, the magnitudes of secondary compression are evaluated by laboratory and in-situ consolidation tests or by empirical $C_{a/}$ $C_{c}$ relationships. The empirical $C_{a/}$ $C_{c}$ may not be only economical, but a fast and powerful tool in estimating secondary consolidation settlement. However, databases of the $C_{a/}$ $C_{c}$ relationship for sites in Korea are currently insufficient. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship of $C_{a/}$ $C_{c}$, on marine clay near the southern sea in Korea. In this study a series of incremental loading consolidation tests (measuring base pore water pressure) are performed. It was found that the $C_{a/}$ $C_{c}$ on undisturbed marine clay equaled 0.0397. This value is similar to the value proposed by Mesri and Castro(1987) for inorganic clay and silt. and silt. and silt.

  • The concurrent injection of cosolvent and air, a cosolvent-air (CA) flood was recently suggested for a dense nonaqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) remediation technology. The objectives of this study were to elucidate the DNAPL removal mechanisms of the CA flood and to quantify mass transfer rate coefficients during CA flooding. DNAPL removal mechanisms were examined by evaluating the effects of air flow rate and DNAPL solubility and visually documented at a pore-scale. Two serial processes, immiscible displacement and dissolution, were experimentally and visually documented during CA flooding. Mass transfer rate coefficients (K) were computed from the data showing PCE saturation versus time. Results showed that CA floods exhibited higher K values than cosolvent floods without concurrent air injection. • Transport phenomena of reactant and product are directly linked to intrinsic inhomogeneous random configurations of catalyst layer (CL) that consist of ionomer, carbon-supported catalyst (Pt/C), and pores. Hence, electrochemically active surface area (ECSA) of Pt/C is dominated by geometrical morphology of mass transport path. Undoubtedly these ECSAs are key factor of total fuel cell efficiency. In this study, non-deterministic micro-scale CLs were randomly generated by Monte Carlo method and implemented with the percolation process. To ensure valid inference about Pt/C catalyst utilization, 600 samples were chosen as the number of necessary samples with 95% confidence level. Statistic results of 600 samples generated under particular condition (20vol% Pt/C, 30vol% ionomer, 50vol% pore, and 20nm particle diameter) reveal only 18.2%~81.0% of Pt/C can construct ECSAs with mean value of 53.8%. This study indicates that the catalyst utilization in fuel cell CLs cannot be identical notwithstanding the same design condition.

  • In this study, we stabilized the screened soil from landfills by using aerobic bioreactor and evaluated aerobic decomposition of it. Four lab-scale bioreactors (anaerobic and 1 PV/day aeration, 5 PV/day aeration, 10 PV/day aeration) filled with screened soil were operated to investigate the effect of air injection quantity on stabilization of screened soil. In case of aerobic bioreactors, the decomposition of organics in screened soil was higher than anaerobic bioreactor. According to the results of landfill gas and soil respiration test, the air injection quantity of 5 PV/day was most efficient in stabilization of screened soil.

  • The authors investigated the bacterial community attached to granular activated carbon(GAC) particles and the susceptibility of the community to chlorine disinfection. The study was carried out at the G Water Treatment Plant in Seoul, which was in full-scale operation. Bacteria attached to the surface of GAC increased gradually with treatment from $0.4{\times}106{\sim}8.5{\times}106 CFU/g$. TOC removal was under 1.0 mg/L due to increased bacterial community on the surface of GAC. It was found that TOC removal was closely related with physical and biological parameters such as pore volume and the number of attached bacteria. When the washed and the attached cells were disinfected with 1.0mg/L of chlorine for 1 hour, the washed cells with chlorination could be controlled, but the number of the attached cells increased gradually. The results suggest a possibility that the treatment and disinfection barriers can be penetrated and pathogenic bacteria may break into the drinking water supplying system.

  • Chemical Mechanical Planarization(CMP) has been accepted as the most effective processes for ultra large scale integrated (ULSI) chip manufacturing. However, as the polishing process continues, pad pores get to be glazed by polishing residues, which hinder the supply of new slurry. And pad surface is ununiformly deformed as real contact distance. These defects make material removal rate(MRR) decrease with a number of polishied wafer. Also the desired within-chip planarity, within wafer non-uniformity(WIWNU) and wafer to wafer non-uniformity(WTWNU) arc unable to be achieved. So, pad conditioning in CMP Process is essential to overcome these defects. The eletroplated or brazed diamond conditioner is used as the conventional conditioning. And. allumina long fiber, the jet power of high pressure deionized water, vacuum compression. ultrasonic conditioner aided by cavitation effect and ceramic plate conditioner are once used or under investigation. But. these methods arc not sufficient for ununiformly deformed pad surface and the limits of conditioning effect. So this paper focuses on the characteristics of diamond conditioner which reopens glazed pores and removes ununiformly deformed pad away.

  • Nowadays, recycling of recycled aggregates from the waste concrete is seriously demanded for the protection of environment and the shortage of aggregates owing to the large scale construction project. In this study, for the development of polymer composite recycling recycled aggregates from the waste concrete, twenty five specimens of the polymer composite were prepared with the five levels of replacement ratios of recycled aggregates (0, 25, 50, 75, 100%) and polymer-cement ratios (0,5, 10, 15, 20%), respectively. For the evaluation of the performance of polymer composite specimens, various physical properties such as compressive and flexural strengths, water absorption, hot water resistance, total pore volume and porosity were investigated. As a result, physical properties of polymer composite were remarkably improved with an increase of polymer cement ratios, but greatly decreased with the replacement ratios of recycled aggregates.

  • The potential of electrokinetic (EK) technology has been successfully demonstrated for the remediation of heavy metal contaminated fine-grained soils through laboratory scale and field application studies. Arsenic contamination in soil is a serious problem affecting both site use and groundwater quality. The EK technology was evaluated for the removal of arsenic from two soil samples: kaolinite clay artificially contaminated with arsenic and arsenic-bearing tailing soil taken from the Myungbong (MB) mining area. The effect of cathodic electrolyte on the process was investigated using three different types of electrolyte: deionized water (DIW), potassium phosphate (KH$_2$PO$_4$) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH). The result of experiments on the kaolinite clay shows that the potassium phosphate was most effective in extracting arsenic, probably resulting from anion exchange of arsenic species by phosphate. On the contrary, the sodium hydroxide seemed to be most efficient in removing arsenic from the tailing soil, and it is explained by the fact that sodium hydroxide increased the soil pH and accelerated ionic migration of arsenic species through increase in desorption and dissolution of arsenic species into pore water.
