This study represents basic research into the utilization of mixed ash (fly ash and bottom ash) from the ash pond of the Taean Thermal Power Plant as a construction material. We conducted physical and mechanical experiments on the mixed ash and examined its engineering characteristics in terms of its use as a material for road landfill and structure backfill. We evaluated the physical and chemical characteristics of the ash by performing tests to determine specific gravity, maximum and minimum density, liquid limit and plastic limit, grain size distribution, composition (by X-ray diffraction), and loss on ignition. We also evaluated the mechanical characteristics by testing for permeability, compaction, CBR, and tri-axial compression. The experiments on the mixed ash yielded a specific gravity of 2.18-2.20, dry density of $9.38-13.32\;kN/m^3$, modified CBR of 16.5%-21%, permeability coefficient of 1.32 to $1.89-10^{-4}cm/sec$, and drained friction angle of $36.43^{\circ}-41.39^{\circ}$. The physical and mechanical properties of the mixed ash do not meet the quality standards stipulated for road landfill and structure backfill materials. Mixed ash with a high content of fly ash failed to meet some of the quality standards. Therefore, in order to utilize the mixed ash as a material for road landfill and structure backfill, it is necessary to improve its properties by mixing with bottom ash.
The recycling of coal bottom ash generated from coal power plants in Korea has been limited due to heterogenous characteristics of the materials. The most common management option for the ash is disposal in landfills (i.e. ash pond) near ocean. The presence of large coarse and fine materials in the ash has prompted the desire to beneficially use it in an application such as fill materials. Prior to reuse application as fill materials, the potential risks to the environment must be assessed with regard to the impacts. In this study, a total of nine test cells with bottom ash samples collected from pretreated bottom ash piles and coal ash pond in a coal-fired power plant were constructed and operated under the field conditions to evaluate the leachability over a period of 210 days. Leachate samples from the test cells were analyzed for a number of chemical parameters (e.g., pH, salinity, electrical conductance, anions, and metals). The concentrations of chemicals detected in the leachate were compared to appropriate standards (drinking water standard) with dilution attenuation factor, if possible, to assess potential leaching risks to the surrounding area. Based on the leachate analysis, most of the samples showed slightly high pH values for the coal ash contained test cells, and contained several ions such as sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, chloride, sulfate, and nitrate in relatively large quantities. Three elements (aluminum, boron, and barium) were commonly detected above their respective detection limits in a number of leachate samples, especially in the early leaching period of time. The results of the test cell study indicate that the pollutants in the leachate from the coal ash test cells were not of a major concern in terms of leaching risk to surface water and groundwater under field conditions as fill materials. However, care must be taken in extending these results to actual applications because the results presented in this study are based on the limited field test settings and time frame. Structural characteristics and analysis for coal bottom ash may be warranted to apply the materials to actual field conditions.
Bottom ash from coal fired power plants is not widely used due to a broad range of particle sizes and a high carbon content for producing geopolymers. The effect of mechanical activation on compressive strength of bottom ash- based geopolymers was examined by rod and planetary-ball milling to encourage full-fledged recycling of bottom ash, the main component of pond ash. The amount of amorphous component in the milled ash samples did not change significantly after the mechanical activation. It is presumably because needle-shaped mullite crystals, which is a major crystalline phase and grown in a glassy matrix, possess high strength and toughness, and therefore, they could endure external shocks and remain almost intact. Milling operation, however, decreased the particle size and improved the homogeneity of ash, thereby leading to increase reactivity of milled ash with alkali activators. Rod milling produced a relatively narrow particle size distribution of the milled ash particles; however, it was less effective in reducing the particle size. Nevertheless, it was interesting to observe that rod milling had equal effect on improving the compressive strength of geopolymers up to about 37%, as that of planetary ball milling. Rod milling is believed to be suitable process for enhancing the reactivity of bottom ash for large-scale recycling of bottom ash and producing geopolymers.

This study comparatively analyzed the properties of hydration reaction and strength development of four types of pond ash(PA) and fly ash(FA), aiming for the effective use of PA. The PA whose chlorine content was highest due to the seawater movement method had a faster setting time, higher cumulative heat, and greater initial strength development than those of FA due to the acceleration of the cement hydration reaction. However, the activity factor increase rate decreased after seven days of curing due to the rapid generation of early hydrates. The PA that contained impurities, such as a large amount of unburned carbon, had a delayed setting time due to the lower hydration reaction. Moreover, the strength was degraded in all curing ages. The PA whose chlorine content was lower due to the freshwater movement method and the amorphous content exhibited similar hydration reactivity and strength development characteristics compared to that of FA. The thermogravimetric analysis results verified that it had a similar level of Ca(OH)2 consumption and pozzolanic reactivity with that of FA. Conclusively, it is necessary to expand the application of the freshwater movement method and manage the ignition loss to raise PA's usability.
Fly ash generated from (he pulverized coal power plant have caused the serious ocean pollution due to the disposal in the ash pond, the life reduction of a power plant and the waste of re-utilizable resource The research to reuse the unburned carbon and mineral composing of the ash has been progressed. In this study. the physical and chemical characteristics of high grade ash and unburned carbon particles obtained from countercurrent column flotation are investigated. The cleaned ash of the less 0,5% loss on Ignition(LOI) in carbon content is a spherical sphere and 39.8${\mu}m$ in size of MMD(Mass Median Diameter). 2.22 $m^2/g$ of specific area. The morphology of high LOI carbon particles is a amorphousness, 76.6 ${\mu}m$ of particle size and 15.2 $m^2/g$ of specific The high grade cleaned ash and the high LOI ash have some difference in the light of physical. chemical and morphological characteristics

This study introduces a densification technique of controlled low strength materials (CLSM) made with coal ashes by pump discharge pressure. Based on a small-scale laboratory test results, unit weight of CLSM around discharge pipe is greater than that of relatively some distant area from discharge pipe. It is also found that densification of CLSM depends on not only mixture rate of pond ash but also fly ash and location of discharge pipe.

Significant amount of bottom ash has been produced in the power plant located at southeast region of Korea, but those were abandoned in the pond site without any treatment. In these days, there is a strong move to enforce environmental regulations to protect surrounding nature, a lot of pressure is given to the power plant industry to remove hazardous chemicals from their waste material before landfill or site storage. The overall objective of this research is to separate hazardous chemicals from the bottom ash, and use it safely as sustainable construction material. In this specific study, magnetic separation of bottom ash was applied, and used as a fine aggregates to make mortar specimens. According to the results, it was found that the use of bottom ash decreased 28-day compressive strength. However, using non-magnetic bottom ash provides best results in terms of thermal conductivity, showing strong possibility to be used as heat insulating material.

Distribution of rare earth metals (REMs) and rare valuable metals (RVMs) contents in coal ashes (fly ash, bottom ash, and pond ash) and leachate from 11 coal-fired power plants in Korea were investigated. Coal ashes and leachates were found to contain important REMs and RVMs such as Yttrium (Y) and Neodymium (Nd), which was in the range of 23~75 mg/kg. However, it still requires developing effective recovery and separation methods in order to utilize REMs and RVMs in ash and leachate. Recovery of valuable elements (Y and Nd) from various and extensive ash sources (8.21 million tons/year in 2013) can provide the existing power plants with additional profit; therefore, it can significantly improve economics of the power plants.
There are needs to examine the consequences of a regulation in effect to control the migration of leachates from disposal sites. The main objective of this study is to illustrate the methodology to evaluate basic disposal designs for compliance with a certain regulation, The "100/100 rule" is selected for demonstration purpose which dictates that the time for the leachates to travel a horizontal distance of 100feet (30.5m) away from the property where the landfill or pond is located must exceed 100 years. The two primary methods for disposal of ash from coal-fired utility plants, landfill and pond, are studied, Numerical groundwater flow analysis resulted in pressure head distribution and flux information in the cross-section of the domain while path line analysis provided travel path and time of leachate migration to compliance zone.ance zone.
In this study, the possibility of the utilization of coal ash as earthwork materials is investigated. For this purpose, some laboratory experiments were carried out. The samples used in these tests are fly ash(FA), bottom ash(BA), coal ash dropped into ash pond(FA:BA=8:2), and mixed coal ash(FA:BA=5:5), which were discharged as a by-product at Yong-Yeul thermoelectric power plant, and general road filling materials. And for the deformation analysis of coal ash reclamation ground, several hyperbolic model parameters were determined by triaxial compression test. As a result of this study, coal ash has excellent engineering properties such as strength parameters comparing with general soils of the same grain size, especially in case of being used as backfill materials and reclamation materials on soft ground, and coal ash is superior to general earthwork materials in engineering properties becasuse of self hardening behaveiour, light weight property, etc.
