The 23 wt% polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)/15 wt% polyurethane (PU) fibers were electrospun using the conjugated nozzle at a flow rate of 1.0 mL/h and an electric field of 1 kV/cm. The formation of ${\beta}$ crystal phase in the PVDF and the PVDF/PU fibers was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. After electrospinning, the asspun fibers were immersed in a boiling water and then dried at $100^{\circ}C$ in a convection oven to make a crimp phenomenon. The crimps with a diameter of $2.0{\pm}0.08{\mu}m$ were observed for the PVDF/PU fibers after hydrothermal treatment without sacrificing the extent of ${\beta}$ crystal phase. All the PU, PVDF and PVDF/PU fibers exhibited average cell viability of more than 98 %. The cell proliferation results suggested that L-929 cells adhered well to the PU, PVDF and PVDF/PU fibers and proliferated continuously with increasing time, indicating that the PVDF/PU fibers are highly applicable to the biomedical applications.
In this research, the application of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) modified PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) membrane was tested as a simply and beginning attempt to overcome membrane fouling because CNTs importantly affect the transport of natural organic matter (NOM). Suwannee River fulvic acid (SRFA) as the representative of NOM was selected and its sorption results with single-walled CNT (SWCNT), multi-walled CNT (MWCNT), and oxidized MWCNT (O-MWCNT) were obtained through the batch experiment. SRFA sorption isotherms had a strong nonlinearity and its sorption capacity followed the order O-MWCNT < MWCNT < SWCNT. The adsorbed mass of SRFA on each CNT decreased as a function of pH due to their charge repulsion. For the CNT-PVDF membrane filtration experiments, the suspended CNT solution (10 mg/40 mL) was incorporated into $0.45{\mu}m$-PVDF membrane and 5 mg/L of SRFA solution was monitored using UV detector connected with high pressure pump after passing through CNT-PVDF membrane. The SRFA removal efficiency by MWCNT-PVDF membrane was the strongest among other modified membranes. This suggests that the CNT modified microfiltration (MF) membrane might effectively and selectively apply to treat the contaminated water including organic compounds in the presence of NOM.
To study the effect of titanium dioxide ($TiO_2$) nanoparticles on membrane performance and structure and to explore possible improvement of using mixed solvents in the casting solution, composite polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) ultrafiltration membranes were prepared via immersion precipitation method using a mixture of two solvents triethyl phosphate (TEP) and dimethylacetamide (DMAc) and addition of $TiO_2$ nanoparticles. Properties of the neat and composite membranes were characterized using scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and contact angle and membrane porosity measurements. The neat and composite membranes were further investigated in terms of BSA rejection and flux decline in cross flow filtration experiments. Following hydrophilicity improvement of the PVDF membrane by addition of 0.25 wt.% $TiO_2$, (from $70.53^{\circ}$ to $60.5^{\circ}$) degree of flux decline due to irreversible fouling resistance of the composite membrane reduced significantly and the flux recovery ratio (FRR) of 96.85% was obtained. The results showed that using mixed solvents (DMAc/TEP) with lower content of $TiO_2$ nanoparticles (0.25 wt.%) affected the sedimentation rate of nanoparticles and consequently the distribution of nanoparticles in the casting solution and membrane formation which influenced the properties of the ultimate composite membranes.

In this study, the $\beta$-Polyvinylidene fluoride(PVDF) thin films were fabricated by physical vapor deposition method. Also, the properties of dielectric relaxation were studied to understand carrier's behavior of PVDF thin films, to be regarded as the excellent piezo and pyroelectricity. In the process of vapor deposition, the $\beta$-PVDF thin films have been fabricated under the condition of the substrate temperature at 3$0^{\circ}C$, the applied electric field at 142.8kV/cm and the pressure at 2.0${\times}10^{-5}$torr. The dielectric properties of PVDF have been studied in the frequency range 10Hz to 1MHz at temperature from 30 to $100^{\circ}C$. The relative dielectric constant of $\alpha$ and $\beta$-PVDF were 6.8 and 9.8, respectively, under a frequency of 1kHz. Such a phenomenon was caused by the decrease in intermolecular forces originated by the phase-transition from the TGTG' molecular conformation to the TT planar zig-zag conformation. And the relative dielectric constant is increased as a measuring temperature increases, because of the reduction of relaxation time caused by the decrease of intermolecular force.
Carbon blacks could be used as the filler for the electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding. The poly vinyl alcohol (PVA) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) were used as the matrix for the carbon black fillers. Porous carbon blacks were prepared by $CO_2$ activation. The activation was performed by treating the carbon blacks in $CO_2$ to different degrees of burnoff. During the activation, the enlargement of pore diameters, and development of microporous and mesoporous structures were introduced in the carbon blacks, resulting in an increase of extremely large specific surface areas. The porosity of carbon blacks was an increasing function of the degree of burn-off. The surface area increased from $80\;m^2/g$ to $1142\;m^2/g$ and the total pore volume increased from $0.14073\;cc{\cdot}g^{-1}$ to $0.9343\;cc{\cdot}g^{-1}$. Also, the C=O functional group characterized by aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids and esters was enhanced during the activation process. The EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) of raw N330 carbon blacks filled with PVA was about 1 dB and those of the activated carbon blacks increased to the values between 6 and 9 dB. The EMI SE of raw N330 carbon blacks filled with PVDF was about 7 dB and the EMI SE increased to the range from 11 to 15 dB by the activation.
This paper represents the development of an array-type flexible tactile sensor using PVDF(polyvinylidene fluoride) film and flexible circuitry. The tactile sensor which has $8{\times}8$ taxels is made by using PVDF film and FPC(flexible printed circuit) technique. Experimental results on static and dynamic properties are obtained by applying arbitrary forces and frequencies generated by the shaker. In the static characteristics, the threshold and the linearity of the sensor are investigated. Also dynamic response of the sensor subjected to the variable frequencies is examined. The signals of a contact force to the tactile sensor are sensed and processed in the DSP system in which the signals are digitalized and filtered. Finally, the signals are integrated for taking the force profile. The processed signals of the outputs of the sensor are visualized on a personal computer, the shape and force distribution of the contacted object are obtained using two and three-dimensional image in real time. The reasonable performance for the detection of contact state is verified through the experiment.
The method measuring LEP (liquid entry pressure) was optimized to evaluate the wettabilities of hydrophobic membranes which might affect long-term durability of membrane in MD (membrane distillation) process. Conductivity of the permeate was monitored to measure the LEPs of PE (polyethylene) and PVDF (polyvinylidene di-fluoride) hollow fiber membranes from highly concentrated synthetic feed water of 20 wt% NaCl. Holding time over 5 min and the ratio of membrane area to the tank volume more than $10m^2/m^3$ were required to ensure LEP value.
Recently, interest in technology for eco-friendly energy harvesting has been increasing. Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is one of the most fascinating materials that has been used in energy harvesting technology as well as micro-filters by utilizing an electrostatic effect. To enhance the performance of the electrostatic effect-based nanogenerator, most studies have focused on enlarging the contact surface area of the pair of materials with different triboelectric series. For this reason, one-dimensional nanofibers have been widely used recently. In order to realize practical energy-harvesting applications, PVDF nanofibers are modified by enlarging their contact surface area, modulating the microstructure of the surface, and maximizing the fraction of the ν-phase by incorporating additives or forming composites with inorganic nanoparticles. Among them, nanocomposite structures incorporating various nanoparticles have been widely investigated to increase the β-phase through strong hydrogen bonding or ion-dipole interactions with -CF2/CH2- of PVDF as well as to enhance the mechanical strength. In this study, we report the recent advances in the nanocomposite structure of PVDF nanofibers and inorganic nanopowders.
Velocities of leaky surface acoustic waves (LSAW/sub s/) were measured by using a line-focus polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) transducer and compared with theoretically calculated ones. Isotropic materials of Cu, Al, fused quartz, and anisotropic one of Z-cut α-quartz crystal were used as specimens. The velocities were obtained by the separation time between wave components reflected directly from the surface of specimen and LSAW components according to the defocusing distance. The measured velocities well agree with the theoretical results within 1% error, and it was shown that the leaky pseudo-surface acoustic wave (LPSAW) as well as the LSAW propagates with the typical 6-fold anisotropy on the (0,0,1) surface of α-quartz.
Most sleep apnea patients exhibit severe snoring, and long-lasting sleep apnea may cause insomnia, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, stroke, and other diseases. Although polysomnography is the typical sleep diagnostic method to accurately diagnose sleep apnea by measuring a variety of bio-signals that occur during sleep, it is inconvenient as the patient has to sleep with attached electrodes at the hospital for the diagnosis. In this study, a diagnostic pillow is designed to measure respiration, heart rate, and snoring during sleep, using only one polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) sensor. A PVDF sensor with piezoelectric properties was inserted into a specially made instrument to extract accurate signals regardless of the posture during sleep. Wavelet analysis was used to identify the extractability and frequency domain signals of respiration, heart rate, and snoring from the signals generated by the PVDF sensor. In particular, to separate the respiratory signal in the 0.2~0.5 Hz frequency region, wavelet analysis was performed after removing 1~2 Hz frequency components. In addition, signals for respiration, heart rate, and snoring were separated from the PVDF sensor signal through a Butterworth filter and median filter based on the information obtained from the wavelet analysis. Moreover, the possibility of measuring sleep apnea from these separated signals was confirmed. To verify the usefulness of this study, data obtained during sleeping was used.
