In this study, an outstanding anion exchange chemical filter was prepared for acidic gas removal. Commercial anion exchange resin was attached to polyurethane (PU) foam by using different types of pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA). The water and chemical resistance and also adhesive elongation were investigated. Also, the behavior of HCl and HF adsorption was evaluated as functions of the initial concentration and flow rate. ATE-701, AT-4000C and HCA-1000 showed 900, 1,500% and 2,400% of the elongation, respectively. It was confirmed that the desorption ratio of HCA-1000 was less than 6% and had excellent durability in water and chemical resistance tests. The adsorption occurred faster as the concentration and flow rate of HCl and HF increased. But 100% adsorption equilibrium occurred after 110 minutes, regardless of the concentration and flow rate. In addition, SEM morphology showed that the adhesive was uniformly dispersed, while the porous structure of the ion exchange resin was maintained, and the chemical filter exhibited excellent durability for the adsorption/desorption process.
Purpose : this study was to evaluate the fitness of adjustable dental impression trays on the Koreans : the trays used in the previous study by Kim et al. as part of the dental adjustable tray development project were improved and modified. Material and method: The patterns of tray were made through CAD-CAM process, and a simple silicone-base molds were made from them. The trial products were reproduced by pouring polyurethane into these molds. 30 male students(Wonkwang University, Dental College) and 30 female students (Wonkwang Health Science College, Department of Dental Hygiene) were selected and Reversible hydrocolloid impression materials were used for this study. The fitness of the trays was evaluated by measuring the width and length of impression materials of each measurement sites. Results and conclusion : 1. In adapting the trays inside the mouth, a uniform width of impression material(3 $\sim$ 6mm) was obtained in most sites due to the tooth stops and the inclined planes accommodating the width of the tray 2. The thickness of impression material in the central part of the palate was a mean 9.8mm, which turned out to be somewhat thick. 3. In the mandible. the thickness of the impression material in the lingual side inferior to the contact point of the 1st and 2nd molars was 2.7mm, and the thickness of the material in the lingual side of the rearmost margin was 2.5 mm. The thickness of the impression material of these areas was relatively thin.

The adjustable dental impression trays were made for being adjusted their width automatically along the width of patient's dental arch. The purpose of this study was to investigate the retentive force of adjustable dental impression trays made of different synthetic resin materials. Three pairs of adjustable trays were made of ABS(acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) synthetic resin, polyurethane synthetic resin and polycarbonate synthetic resin with a hole and without a rim on the border area of them. The experiment was done with the horse-shoe shaped metal plate to pull out the set impression body from the tray jig which was made for holding the tray on the lower part of Universal Testing Machine(UTM, Zwick Z020, Zwick Co., Germany). After the alginate impression in the tray was allowed to set four minutes, a tensile force was applied at right angles to the tray which had been previously seated on the jig. The force was applied to measure a maximum force by use of UTM at a constant strain rate 100mm per minute. The results obtained in this study were as follows : 1. The upper trays were showed higher retentive force than lower trays in three tray materials. 2. There was no significant difference in the retentive force of the tray materials(p>0.05).
Linear and cross-linked waterborne polyurethanes (WPUs) based on isophorone diisocyanate and mixed diols of poly(tetramethylene glycol)/hydroxyethyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS-OH) were synthesized with dimethylol propionic acid as an anionic component, trimethylolpropane as a cross-linking agent, and butanediol as a chain extender and characterized. The hydrophobicity, $T_g$, stress-strain behaviors of the linear or cross-linked siloxane-containing WPU (WPU-Si) films with different PDMS content were analyzed by using water contact shape analyzer, energy dispersive spectrometer, dynamic mechanical analyzer, and universal testing machine. The results reveal that as the PDMS content increased, the hydrophobicity of WPU-Si films increased, $T_g$ moved to higher temperature, the breaking stress increased, and the breaking strain decreased.
The weight decrease curves of 18 kinds of polymers have been measured by thermobalance at the same condition where temperature is increased $1^{\circ}C$ per minutes under nitrogen or air atmosphere. The curves are further differentiated to obtain rate curve of weight decrease. Those curve offer a method to compare relative thermal stability, effects of oxygen or modes of thermal degradation of polymers qualitatively. The curves could be classified into following four types: Polystyrene, polymethylmethacrylate and acetal polymer belong to the first type. Those polymers depolymerize mainly into corresponding monomers, weight decrease curves are steepy up to perfect vaporization of polymers and rate curves show a relatively sharp peak. (Type I) Polyvinyl chloride represents the second type. This polymer decomposes with splitting off of hydrogen chloride. The thermogravimetric curve rises rapidly at first, then level off at the moderate weight decrease and gradually rises. Polyvinyl acetate also belongs to this class. (Type II) The modification of the second type is represented by polyester. The curve at the early stage is less steep, the leveling off at the next stage is less clear and the final rising of the curve is steeper than the normal second type. Polyamide, polyurethane, and polycarbonate belong to this type. (Type II') The thermal decomposition of the third type polymers is more complex than that of others. Various irregular chain scissions including side chain splitting and depolymerization to monomers occur simultaneously. The weight of the polymer decreases gradually and the rate curve does not show sharp peaks. Polyvinyl alcohol and diene polymers belong to this type. (Type III) Generally, polycondensation polymers are more stable toward heat than addition polymers and polymers having aromatic nucleus show good thermal stability. Polymers having tertiary carbon atoms such as polystyrene or polypropylene and acetal resin start decomposition under airatmosphere at the temprature below $50^{\circ}C$ or more of the temperature where the polymers start decomposition under nitrogen atmosphere.
A LEGO-type multi-purpose dosimetry phantom was developed for intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), which requires various types of challenging dosimetry. Polystyrene, polyethylene, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), and polyurethane foam (PU-F) were selected to represent muscle, fat, bone, and lung tissue, respectively, after considering the relevant mass densities, elemental compositions, effective atomic numbers, and photon interaction coefficients. The phantom, which is composed of numerous small pieces that are similar to LEGO blocks, provides dose and dose distribution measurements in homogeneous and heterogeneous media. The phantom includes dosimeter holders for several types of dosimeters that are frequently used in IMRT dosimetry. An ion chamber and a diode detector were used to test dosimetry in heterogeneous media under radiation fields of various sizes. The data that were measured using these dosimeters were in disagreement when the field sizes were smaller than $1.5{\times}1.5\;cm^2$ for polystyrene and PTFE, or smaller than $3{\times}3\;cm^2$ for an air cavity. The discrepancy was as large as 41% for the air cavity when the field size was $0.7{\times}0.7\;cm^2$, highlighting one of the challenges of IMRT small field dosimetry. The LEGO-type phantom is also very useful for two-dimensional dosimetry analysis, which elucidates the electronic dis-equilibrium phenomena on or near the heterogeneity boundaries.

As a starting material, BCP (biphasic calcium phosphate) nano powder was synthesized by a hydrothermal microwave-assisted process. A highly porous BCP scaffold was fabricated by the sponge replica method using 60 ppi (pore per inch) of polyurethane sponge. The BCP scaffold had interconnected pores ranging from $100\;{\mu}m$ to $1000\;{\mu}m$, which were similar to natural cancellous bone. To realize the antibacterial property, a microwave-assisted nano Ag spot coating process was used. The morphology and distribution of nano Ag particles were different depending on the coating conditions, such as concentration of the $AgNO_3$ solution, microwave irradiation times, etc. With an increased microwave irradiation time, the amount of coated nano Ag particles increased. The surface of the BCP scaffold was totally covered with nano Ag particles homogeneously at 20 seconds of microwave irradiation time when 0.6 g of $AgNO_3$ was used. With an increased amount of $AgNO_3$ and irradiation time, the size of the coated particles increased. Antibacterial activities of the solution extracted from the Ag-coated BCP scaffold were examined against gram-negative (Escherichia coli) and gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus). When 0.6 g of $AgNO_3$ was used for coating the Ag-coated scaffold, it showed higher antibacterial activities than that of the Ag-coated scaffold using 0.8 g of $AgNO_3$.
Emeraldine salt of polyaniline-dodecylbenzenesulfdnic acid (PANI-DBSA) in organic solvents such as toluene and xylene was obtained by a direct one-step emulsion polymerization technique. When the molar ratio of DBSA to aniline monomer was 1.5:1, its solubility and electric property showed a maximum value and then the solid contents of PANI-DBSA was 8 wt% in toluene. The cast film of PANI-DBSA with no binder was obtained on glass or plastic substrates under ambient conditions. PANI solution can be also easily blended with polyurethane and polystyrene polymers in toluene. Improved electrical performance up to 5 S/cm was achieved with good light-transmittance up to 70% at 500 m thickness. They also showed more homogeneous morphology than that prepared with PANI-DBSA kom aqueous dispersion polymerization. The partially dispersed PANI-DBSA showed particles sizes of 50-400 m in organic solvents and their XRD pattern were observed from the powder sample.
Polyurethanes containing poly(dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS) unit, PU-Si, were synthesized and their thermal and shape memory properties were investigated. Various amounts of PDMS units were incorporated via a solution polymerization method using mixed diols of poly(tetramethylene ether glycol) (PTMEG) and PDMS-diol as the soft segment (SS) and methylene diphenyl diisocyanate and 1,4-butanediol as the hard segment (HS). Two series of PU-Si samples with an HS content of 23% or 32% were prepared and analyzed. For PU-Si with an HS content of 23%, both the cold crystallization temperature ($T_{cc}$) and melt crystallization temperature of the SS domain moved higher temperature with increasing PDMS content, while the melting temperature ($T_m$) of the SS domain remained unaffected. The increase in HS content from 23% to 32% resulted in the increased $T_m$ and disappearance of $T_{cc}$. The shape recovery of PU-Si flim with an HS content of 32% increased while its shape retention decreased as PDMS content increased.
This study was designed to investigate fire characteristics of the plastics insulating materials such as a polystyrene foam, polyurethane foam, and polyethylene foam, which is used an insulating materials i3t workplace. The fire characteristics of plastic insulating materials were carried out from the Cone Calorimeter test according to ISO 5660. The experimental materials used were commercial plastic insulating materials by products and their composition is not disclosed by the manufacturer. As the results of this study; the heat release rate of plastic insulating materials was increased with increasing density and heat flux. The peak heat release rate and the average heat release rate for the polyethylene foam in insulating materials were showed the highest, and the peak heat release rate for the polyethylene foam was the highest. The standard of heat release rate with a kind of products and heat flux of irradiance to prevent fire by plastic insulating materials was suggested.
