  • It has been shown that many Reinforced Concrete(RC) structures designed without seismic details have experienced brittle shear failures in the beam-column joint area and resulted in large permanent deformations and structural collapse. In this study, experimental investigations into the performance of exterior reinforced concrete beam-column joints strengthened with the carbon fiber-reinforced polymer(CFRP) under cyclic loading were presented. The CFRP has been applied by choosing different combinations and locations to determine the effective way to improve structural performances of joints. Eight beam-column joints were tested to investigate behaviors of each specimen under cyclic load and to compare performances of seismic retrofit. According to the experimental study, the retrofit strengthened with the CFRP provides significant improvements of flexural capacity and ductility of beam-column joints originally built without seismic details.

  • Total polar lipid produced from the soybean oil and lard by heating with different surface area at $185^{\circ}C$ were measured by silica gel column chromatography. Further, the polar lipid was fractionated by high performance size exclusion chromatography-evaporative light scattering detector (HPSEC-ELSD). The HPSEC system was composed of two GPC columns $(100\;{\AA}\;and\;500\;{\AA})$ and a THF mobile phase. With this system it was possible to fractionate into the free fatty acid, diglyceride, triglyceride monomer, triglyceride dimer and triglyceride polymers. The triglyceride monomer, triglyceride dimer and triglyceride polymers significantly increased as the heating time and surface area increased. But diglyceride and free fatty acid did not increased as the heating time and surface area increased. Triglyceride polymer (r>0.93), triglyceride dimer (r>0.97), triglyceride monomer (r>0.95) showed a high correlation with polar lipid content. On the other hand, diglyceride (r<0.68) and free fatty acid (r<0.76) were not significantly correlated with the polar lipid content. These results indicated that a major oxidative components formed during thermal oxidation were triglyceride polymers and triglyceride dimer and triglyceride monomer.

  • Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) bar has emerged as a viable and sustainable replacement to steel in reinforced concrete (RC) under severe corrosive environment. The behavior of concrete columns reinforced with FRP bars, spirals, and hoops is an ongoing area of research. In this study, 3D nonlinear numerical modelling of circular concrete columns reinforced with Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) bars and transversely confined with GFRP spirals were conducted using fracture-plastic model. The numerical models and experimental results are found to be in good agreement. The effectiveness of confinement was accessed through von-mises stresses, and it was found that the stresses in the concrete's core are higher with a 30 mm pitch (46 MPa) compared to a 60 mm pitch (36 MPa). The validated models are used to conduct parametric studies. In terms of axial load carrying capacity and member ductility, the effect of concrete strength, spiral pitch, and longitudinal reinforcement ratio are thoroughly investigated. The confinement effect and member ductility of a GFRP RC column increases as the spiral pitch decreases. It is also found that the confinement effect and member ductility decreased with increase in strength of concrete.

  • Aliphatic hydrocarbon gases from rubber pyrolysis have been identified by gas chromatography with tetraethyleneglycol dimethylether column. Rubbers used in this work are polyisoprene, SBR, NBR, polybutadiene, buthyl rubber, polychloroprene and polyurethane rubber. The chromatogram is characteristic for each polymer. Author proposes a method of identification of synthetic rubbers by gas chromatograph of pyrolyzed gas. Sample is pyrolyzed at $450^{\circ}C$ under nitrogen or more effectively helium and gaseous portion, which eliminated liquid condensate, is passed to the column. The appearance of exclusively large peak of isoprene, isobutylene and carbon dioxide shows the presence of polyisoprene, polyisobutylene and polyurethane, respectively. Large peak of butadiene will appear in case of polybutadiene, SBR and NBR, but SBR can be identified through the styrene peak in gas chromatogram of liquid pyrolyzate and NBR can be identified by the evolution of hydrogen cyanide during pyrolysis. Polychloroprene is identified by the evolution of hydrogen chloride. This method could be applied to the identification of copolymer or polymer blend.

  • A metal complex, copper (II) L-proline was chemically bound to ethylene glycol dimethacrylate and divinylbenzene crosslinked chloromethylated polystyrene and they were used as chiral chelate resin matrix for column chromatography to resolve enantiomers of DL-amino acids. The L-enantiomers eluted first and the degree of resolution on the polymer crosslinked with ethylene glycol dimethacrylate was superior to the polymer crosslinked with divinylbenzene.

  • Schiff base ligand columns and glow discharge detector have been developed for the trace analysis of metal ions desolved in water. Various types of hydrazide Schiff base ligands have been used and, additionally, they were examined as a filling material of a HPLC column. The hydrazide Schiff base ligands used were N, N'-oxalybis(salicylaldehydrazone) (OBSH), N, N'-malonylbis(salicylaldehydrazone) (MBSH), and N, N'-succinylbis(salicylaldehydrazone) (SBSH). A mixture of Schiff base ligand and poly(styrene divinylbenzene) was examined and it showed a smooth flow of solution. The OBSH-polymer column demonstrated different effluent factors for different metal ions. Metal ions in eluates were detected by Hollow Cathode Glow Discharge-Atomic Emission Spectrometry(HCGD-AES). HCGD-AES showed good sensitivity and selectivity. This is only the preliminary results of new OBSH-polymer column and glow discharge detector.

  • The mechanical behavior of concrete-filled glass fiber reinforced polymer columns is affected by various factors including concrete strength, stiffness of tube, end confinement effect, and slenderness ratio of members. In this research the behavior of slender columns was examined both experimentally and analytically. Experimental works include 1) compression test with 30cm long glass fiber composite columns under different end confinement conditions, 2) uni-axial compression test for 7 slender columns, which have various slenderness ratios. Short-length stocky columns gave high strength and ductility revealing high confinement action of FRP tubes. The strength increment and strain change were examined under different end confinement conditions. With slender columns, failure strengths, confinement effects, and stress-strains relations were examined. Through analytical work, effective length was computed and it was compared with the amount of reduction in column strength, which is required to predict design strength with slender specimens. This study shows the feasibility of slender concrete-filled glass fiber reinforced polymer composite columns.

  • High temperature size exclusion chromatography (SEC) has been used widely for the characterization of crystalline polymers, for which high temperature operation above the polymer melting temperature is required to dissolve the polymers. However, this high temperature operation has many advantages in SEC separation in addition to merely increasing polymer solubility. At high temperature the eluent viscosity decreases, which in turn decreases the column backpressure and increases the diffusivity of the analytes. Therefore, many reports on the high temperature operation of high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) have focused on shortening the analysis time and enhancing the resolution. However, the application of high temperature SEC analysis to exploit the merits of high temperature operation is scarce. In this article, therefore, we report on a new apparatus design for high temperature SEC.

  • Devastating RC structural failures in the past have identified that the behavior of beam-column joints is more critical and significantly governs the global structural response under seismic loading. The congestion of reinforcement at the beam-column joints with other constructional difficulties has escalated the attention required for strengthening RC beam-column joints. In this context, numerous studies have been carried out in the past, which mainly focused on jacketing the joints with different materials. However, there is no comparative study of different approaches used to strengthen RC beam-column joints, from efficiency and cost perspective. This paper presents a detailed investigation carried out to study the various strengthening schemes of exterior RC beam-column joints, viz., steel fiber reinforcement, carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) strengthening, steel haunch strengthening, and confining joint reinforcement. The effectiveness of each scheme was evaluated experimentally. These specimens were tested under horizontal loading that produced opening moments on the joints and their behavior was studied with emphasis on strength, displacement ductility, stiffness, and failure mechanism. Special attention was given to the study of crack-width.

  • It has been shown that many reinforced concrete(RC) structures designed without seismic details have experienced brittle shear failures in the beam-column joint area and may result in large permanent deformations and structural collapse. In this study, experimental investigations for RC beam-column joints strengthened with the carbon fiber-reinforced polymer(CFRP) under cyclic loadings were presented. The use of CFRP in the joint was varied to determine the effective way of improving the structural performances of RC joints. Ten RC beam-column joints were designed and tested with cyclic loadings. The experimental results showed that the use of CFRP in RC joints would be very effective solutions to improve the seismic performances of the non-seismic RC joints. All of the non-seismic design specimens strengthened with CFRP sheets showed the significant increase of strength and ductility.
