  • This paper presents the mathematical model for rolling behaviors of a small regular polygonal part on an inclined plane. Throughout the numerical analysis performed with the simulation program which has been experimentally validated, it is shown that the number of edges of the rolling polygonal part can be a measure for the energy dissipation rather than the coefficient of friction. The appropriate slope angle has been found to be around 20 degree for roughness-separation as well as shape-separation of polygonal parts which have small number of edges. In additions, the vibratory motion applied to the inclined plane is able to cause mixed parts to be separated more effectively according to the shape or the roughness. Finally, a couple of parts separation methods based on the analysis results are presented, and are validated through the numerical simulation.

  • In the apparel industry, the technology has been advanced rapidly. The use of 3D scanning systems fur the capture and measurement of human body is becoming common place. Three dimensional digital image can be used for design, inspection, reproduction of physical objects. The purpose of this study is to develop a method that drafts men's basic bodice pattern from scanned 3D body surface shape data. In order to pursue this purpose the researchers developed pattern drafting algorithm. The 3D scanner used in this study was Cyberware Whole Body Scanner WB-4. The bodice pattern drafting algorithm from 3D body surface shape data developed in this study is as follows. First, convert geometric 3D body surface data to 3D polygonal mesh data. Second, develop algorithm to lay out 3D polygonal patches onto a plane using Auto Lisp program. The polygon meshes are coplanar, and the individual mesh is continuously in contact with next one The bodice front surface shape data in polygonal patches form was lined up in bust and waist levels. The back bodice was drafted by lining up the polygonal mesh in scapula, chest, and waist levels. in the drafts, gaps between polygons were formed into the darts.

  • This research focussed on developing a hit probability model for polygonal target to increase the survivability of weapon systems by its shape design. First, we defined the delivery errors and derived functions for these errors based on the assumption of bivariate normal distribution, and the derived functions for probability of shot hitting of various shapes of polygonal target. Also, we developed computer program for computation of the probability of hitting a general n-sided polygon and we have shown a sample run output. The model could be used to improve the survivability from design phase by designing optimal polygonal shape of weapon system.

  • Herein, we present effective polygonal finite elements to which the strain-smoothed element (SSE) method is applied. Recently, the SSE method has been developed for conventional triangular and quadrilateral finite elements; furthermore, it has been shown to improve the performance of finite elements. Polygonal elements enable various applications through flexible mesh handling; however, further development is still required to use them more effectively in engineering practice. In this study, piecewise linear shape functions are adopted, the SSE method is applied through the triangulation of polygonal elements, and a smoothed strain field is constructed within the element. The strain-smoothed polygonal elements pass basic tests and show improved convergence behaviors in various numerical problems.

  • For shape description, a fast sequential method for polygonal approximation of chaincoded plane curves which are object boundaries is proposed. The proposed method performs polygonal approximation by use of the distance error from one point to a line, and its performance is enhanced by the smoothed slopes of lines. Furthermore, accumulated distance error and variable distance error threshold are proposed in order to consider and implement the visual characteristics of the human being.

  • In this letter, we propose a novel polygonal approximation of digital curves that preserve original shapes. The proposed method first detects break points, which have two different consecutive vectors, and sets an initial dominant point set. The approximation is then performed iteratively by deleting a dominant point using a novel distance, which can measure both the distance and the angle acuteness. The experimental results show that the proposed method can preserve original shapes and is appropriate for various shapes, including slab-sided shapes.

  • The advent of high-performance terrestrial laser scanners has made it possible to capture dense point-clouds of engineering facilities. 3D shape acquisition from engineering facilities is useful for supporting maintenance and repair tasks. In this paper, we discuss methods to reconstruct box shapes and polygonal prisms from large-scale point-clouds. Since many faces may be partly occluded by other objects in engineering plants, we estimate possible box shapes and polygonal prisms and verify their compatibility with measured point-clouds. We evaluate our method using actual point-clouds of engineering plants.

  • In this paper, we address how to reduce the length of tool retraction in a zigzag pocket machining. Tool retraction, in a zigzag pocket machining, is a non-cutting operation in which the tool moves to any remaining regions for machining. We developed an algorithm of generating tool retraction length in convex or concave polygonal shapes including islands. In the algorithm, we consider concave areas of cutting direction in the polygonal shape. Considering concave areas of cutting direction, the polygonal shape is decomposed to subregions which do not need any tool retraction. Using the proposed algorithm, we calculated the shortest length of tool retraction in cutting direction. Examples are shown to verify the validity of the algorithm.

  • The humid thermal vibration characteristics of a nonhomogeneous thermopiezoelectric nonlocal plate of polygonal shape are addressed in the purview of generalized nonlocal thermoelasticity. The plate is initially stressed, and the three-dimensional linear elasticity equations are taken to form motion equations. The problem is solved using the Fourier expansion collocation method along the irregular boundary conditions. The numerical results of physical variables have been discussed for the triangle, square, pentagon, and hexagon shapes of the plates and are given as dispersion curves. The amplitude of non-dimensional frequencies is tabulated for the longitudinal and flexural symmetric modes of the thermopiezoelectric plate via moisture and thermal constants. Also, a comparison of numerical results is made with existing literature, and good agreement is reached.

  • Shape changes of hard mask play a key role in the aspect ratio dependent etch (ARDE). For etch process using high density and energy ions, deformation of hard mask shape becomes more severe, and high aspect ratio (HAR) etch profile is distorted. In this study, polygonal geometric model for shape-deformation of amorphous carbon layered hard mask is suggested to control etch profile during the process. Mask shape is modeled with polygonal geometry consisting of trapezoids and rectangles, and it provides dynamic information about angles of facets and etched width and height of remained mask shape, providing important features for real-time HAR etch profiling.
