Probing Cosmic Near Infrared Background using AKARI Data

  • The first generation stars in the universe are not observed as discrete objects by using current observational facilities, but their contributions are redshifted to the near infrared wavelength bands at present universe. Therefore, investigation of background radiation at near infrared is important for the study of the first stars. In this study, we present new observations of spatial fluctuations in sky brightness toward the north ecliptic pole using data from AKARI. Among pointed observation program of AKARI, we used two pointing surveys named Monitor field and NEP wide field at three wavelength bands 2.4, 3.2, and 4.1 ${\mu}$. To obtain spatial fluctuations from observed images, first of all, we exclude pixels affected by resolved foreground objects and then obtain diffuse map which consists of diffused radiation only. Because the diffuse map contains not only cosmological components but also various foreground components, in order to detect cosmological components, we estimate the contributions of foreground components separately. The results of this study show that there remains excess spatial fluctuation that cannot be explained by known foreground sources. This work is based on observations with AKARI, a JAXA project with the participation of ESA.

Development of the Simulator for FPC-G, the Focal Plane Fine Guiding Camera for SPICA

  • SPICA(SPace Infrared Telescope for Cosmology and Astrophysics) is an infrared space observatory with cooled telescope of 3 m aperture. Because of its large aperture, near- and mid-infrared instruments onboard SPICA require fine guidance with attitude accuracy less than 0.1 arcsecond. The FPC-G is a focal plane camera to achieve this high attitude accuracy and KASI is leading its development. The SPICA project is now under the Risk Mitigation Phase 2 (RMP2) and one of major risks is to satisfy the requirement of pointing and attitude control. To assess the impacts of disturbance sources on the attitude control and devise methods to mitigate possible risks, a software simulator of the FPC-G is under the development. In this presentation, we report the status of development of the simulator and the development plan during the RMP2.

KMTNet 실시간 자료처리 파이프라인 개발 (DEVELOPMENT OF REAL-TIME DATA REDUCTION PIPELINE FOR KMTNet)

  • Real-time data reduction pipeline for the Korea Microlensing Telescope Network (KMTNet) was developed by Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI). The main goal of the data reduction pipeline is to find variable objects and to record their light variation from the large amount of observation data of about 200 GB per night per site. To achieve the goal we adopt three strategic implementations: precision pointing of telescope using the cross correlation correction for target fields, realtime data transferring using kernel-level file handling and high speed network, and segment data processing architecture using the Sun-Grid engine. We tested performance of the pipeline using simulated data which represent the similar circumstance to CTIO (Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory), and we have found that it takes about eight hours for whole processing of one-night data. Therefore we conclude that the pipeline works without problem in real-time if the network speed is high enough, e.g., as high as in CTIO.

거대자기임피던스 효과를 이용한 자기 센서 (Magnetic Sensor Using Giant Magneto-Impedance Effect)

  • 거대자기임피던스 효과를 이용한 자기센서를 사용하여 자화된 금속이물질을 감지할 수 있는 고감도 금속이물질 감지 센서를 구현하였다. 스트립 형태의 센서는 지자기의 영향으로 스트립의 축방향이 놓인 위치에 따라 초기 직류전압은 다르게 나타났지만 접지점에 연결된 스트립에서 멀어질수록 외부 자계에 대한 출력전압이 증가하며 스트립의 축 방향에는 무관함을 나타내었다. 제안하는 자기센서는 고감도 실현을 위하여 능동잡음필터를 적용하여 기저잡음의 반 이상을 제거할 수 있었고 설치된 주변 환경에서 발생하는 전자기 잡음 및 지자기로 부터의 영향을 받지 않고 자화된 금속 이물질을 검출할 수 있음을 보여주었다. 자화된 철구의 경우 5mm 이격거리에서 지름 0.8mm 까지 감지가 가능함을 실험적으로 보여주었다.

대한치주과학회지에 게재된 논문의 통계방법 평가(2000-2006) (Evaluation of statistical methods in the Journal of Korean Academy of Periodontology published from 2000 to 2006)

  • Purpose: This article is purposed to present the correct statistic method by pointing out the statistical errors after analyzing the method of articles that were published in Korean Academy Journal of Periodontology and made statistic processes in them. Methods: 488 science papers which being put in Korean Academy Journal of Periodontology published from 2000 to 2006 was divided according to year. Results: In the 308 articles that applied statistic methods, 59 articles (50.0%), the largest portion of all, were included the case that applied incorrect parametric statistic method when needed to apply parametric statistics and 38 articles (32.2%) were included in the case that applied incorrect parametric statistic method when needed to apply non-parametric statistics. Conclusions: It is necessary to present the cases of inappropriate statistical methods in order to improve the quality of academic researches. Also, to apply adequate methods of statistics, it is suggested to report the articles periodically which are comparing and analyzing the statistical methods that are applied in the international articles in periodontal field.

Gesture based Natural User Interface for e-Training

  • Objective: This paper describes the process and results related to the development of gesture recognition-based natural user interface(NUI) for vehicle maintenance e-Training system. Background: E-Training refers to education training that acquires and improves the necessary capabilities to perform tasks by using information and communication technology(simulation, 3D virtual reality, and augmented reality), device(PC, tablet, smartphone, and HMD), and environment(wired/wireless internet and cloud computing). Method: Palm movement from depth camera is used as a pointing device, where finger movement is extracted by using OpenCV library as a selection protocol. Results: The proposed NUI allows trainees to control objects, such as cars and engines, on a large screen through gesture recognition. In addition, it includes the learning environment to understand the procedure of either assemble or disassemble certain parts. Conclusion: Future works are related to the implementation of gesture recognition technology for a multiple number of trainees. Application: The results of this interface can be applied not only in e-Training system, but also in other systems, such as digital signage, tangible game, controlling 3D contents, etc.

Extended Fitts' Law for Three-Dimensional Environment

  • This study explored an extended three-dimensional Fitts' law that is more suited for the pointing task than the conventional Fitts' law. The experiments were conducted under the manipulation of the distance to the target, size of the target, and direction of the target's location that can be described by two angles, $\theta1$ and $\theta2$. Considering the starting point as the center of coordinates, $\theta1$ is the angle between the positive z-axis and the target location and $\theta2$ is the angle between the positive y-axis and the projected target location on the x-y plane. From the experimental results, we confirmed that all four variables significantly affect the movement time. As we extended the index of difficulty of the conventional Fitts' model by incorporating $\theta1$ and $\theta2$, we established an extended Fitts' model that showed better accordance with the empirical data than the conventional Fitts' model and 3D Fitts' law of Murata and Iwase, in terms of the $r^2$ and the standard error of the residual between the measured movement time and the predicted value.

대학교육에서의 CHANGE 플립러닝(Flipped Learning) 수업모형 개발 -교육방법및교육공학교과를 중심으로- (The Development of CHANGE Flipped Learning Instructional Model in Higher Education - base on the 'educational method and technology')

  • Main objectives of the this study are: to develop a model of "Flipped Leaning" that is designed to enhance self-directed learning, learning motivation and self-control, and to verify its effectiveness-in higher education. The verification process initially concentrated on the feasibility study of the model with a thorough literature review and case analyses; then, its general and practical applicability were tested with a field study. As a result, first, the CHANGE Class Model, specifically designed for effective and efficient "Flipped Learning", was developed. It is thus named for the stages that the learning process takes place in the model-i.e., (1) Check ${\rightarrow}$ (2) Ask ${\rightarrow}$ (3) Notice ${\rightarrow}$ (4) Group presentation ${\rightarrow}$ (5) Evaluation, and it emphasizes the dynamic, questions centered (i.e. back and forth between the students and the instructor as well as between the students) learning process. Second, the Model was instrumental in enhancing self-directed learning, learning motivation and self-control; thus, as a result, it significantly improved the effectiveness, the level of concentration and the attractiveness of the learning process. The value of this study lies in pointing to a clear plan to allow a student in higher learning to set-up a self-directed learning plan, to be able to control it while being continuously motivated to complete it.

신경망 학습을 이용한 2축 ARM 헬리콥터의 중심이동 조향법 (Shift Steering Control of 2-axis ARM Helicopter based on a Neural Network)

  • This paper proposes a helicopter direction adjustment system using barycenter shift. Most conventional methods for direction adjustment of uniaxial helicopters rely on the angle of inclination of the main rotor. However, the inherent burden of the bearing of the main rotor and serious abrasion of the helicopter using the above methods may results in loss of balance. To decrease abrasion and enhance the barycenter stability, the proposed method was used to shift the barycenter of the helicopter instead of the main rotor for direction adjustment. We set a biaxial ARM on a uniaxial helicopter to adjust the direction of ARM pointing as well as to realize stable direction control when the helicopter loses its balance. The method may enhance the landing safety of helicopters in emergencies. Uniaxial helicopters can be controlled under any environment by adjusting the motor parameters of the ARM which is dependent on the center of mass using neural network. The experiment results show that the helicopter can return to the starting position quickly under the external disturbance.

선상 2축 감시장비의 기구 및 영상 안정화 (Kinematic and Image Stabilization of a Two-axis Surveillance System on Ship)

  • 해상환경에서 감시장비의 운용시 원치 않는 외란 운동으로 장비의 안정화 성능이 저하된다. 본 논문에서는 선상 2축 감시장비의 정밀한 목표물 지향를 위해 자세정보의 좌표변환을 통해 움직임을 보상해주는 기구적 안정화를 적용하였다. 적용 결과, MEMS 센서의 떨어지는 정밀도와 기구적인 제약에 의해 오차를 더 줄일 없어 보완적인 기능으로 영상 안정화를 도입하였다. 또한 본 이중 안정화 방식의 실시간 실행을 위해 6축 운동 시뮬레이터를 포함한 테스트 베드를 구축하였으며, 하드웨어 포함 시뮬레이션 수행을 통해 본 방식의 유용성을 검증하였다.
