  • Pneumatic cylinders are classified into rod-type pneumatic cylinders and rodless pneumatic cylinders depending on the presence of the rod. Rodless cylinders have a constant area and have no deflection. Rodless cylinders are widely used in automatic systems requiring high-speed performance and high-precision transportation. However, the research of the pneumatic cylinder has been focused on the structure and life characteristics. In this research, aging characteristics and shape parameter analysis which are related to the lifetime were investigated. By conducting the lifetime tests with two different materials for the transfer plate, the failure mode and lifetime characteristics were analyzed. By the Anderson-Darling (A-D) verification based on the complete data set, the analysis results of lifetime distribution, shape parameter, and scale parameter were provided.

  • This paper presents the construction of an active suspension system of a one-wheel car model by using fuzzy reasoning. The car model is approximately described by a nonlinear two degrees freedom system subject to excitation from a road profile, and the active control force is constructed by actuating a pneumatic actuator, and the degradation of the performance due to the delay of the pneumatic actuator is improved by inserting a compensator. The fuzzy control is obtained by single input rule modules fuzzy reasoning, and the excitation from the road profile is estimated by using a disturbance observer. The experimental result shows that the proposed active suspension system much improves the performance in the vibration suppression of the car model.

  • An adaptive controller for trajectory tracking control of a pneumatic cylinder is proposed. The controller is directly derived by using Lyapunov function, and very simple and computationally efficient since it does not require the mathematical model or the parameter values of a pneumatic system. It is also shown that the system is bounded stable with the controller, and the size of tracking errors can be made arbitrarily small. The stability and the performance of the controller is also verified experimentally. The results of the experiments demonstrate that the proposed controller achieves more accurate trajectory tracking performance than a PD controller.

  • Air balance hoists are widely used in handling of heavy materials in industry. Currently used air balance hoists adopt manual switches for vertical motion, thus the operator has a difficulty in operating of the switches and handling of material simultaneously. To overcome this difficulty, this study develops a weightless air-balance-hoist system using compressed air. This system memorizes the weight of material in terms of pneumatic pressure with a pneumatic circuit. Such memory of the material weight is used for achieving weightless handling of materials. Through a series of experiments, handling forces and the response of the system for various material weights are analyzed. The results show that the developed system can be used for weightless handling o( heavy materials.

  • Experimental study is conducted to clarify the pneumatic characteristics of brake system for freight car. KNR(Korean National Railroad)'s freight cars have the laden-tare type control valve of brake system. But, laden-tare type control valve has some shortcomings to match the high speed freight car. Newly developed diaphragm type control valve is introduced to adopt freight car for speed-up. The test using the formated train set consisted of 21 cars is conducted to estimate the pneumatic braking efficiency of the mixed train set. From the results of experiment, the pressure characteristics of each brake cylinder show similar patterns qualitatively. But, in the case of release and brake application, quantitative pressure values of brake cylinder are different.

  • This paper describes the design and development of a PWM electronic controller for a high performance Pneumatic Actuation System. The task includes the design of a closed center valve circuit for minimum gas consumption, the selection of optimum values for key parameters in the PWM circuit, and the design of lag-lead compensation circuit. These were carried out through specific experiments using a prototype pneumatic actuation system. The final performance obtained with the actuation system confirmed the successful design of the developed PWM electronic controller.

  • When a robot is to have contact with its enviornment, such as a medi-care robot, it would be advantageous for the robot to have a high compliance. For this reason, a robot having not only a flexible link but also an actuator with compliance, is desirable. This paper is concerned with the position and vibration control of 1 degree of freedom flexible robot using a pneumatic artificial muscle actuator. The dynamics of the manipulator assumed to be and Euler-Bernoulli beam are derived on the basis of the linear mathematical modle. Although this pneumatic artifical muscle actuator has many merits for the compliance robot, it is difficult to make an effective control scheme of this system because of ths nonlinearity and uncertainty on the dynamics of the actuator. By designing a controller using .mu.-synthesis, robust performance against measurement noise, various modeling uncertainties on the dynamics of the servo valve, actuator and mainpulator, is achieved. The effectiveness of the proposed control method is illustrated through simulations and experiments.

  • Pneumatic Active Engine Mount(PAEM) with open-loop control system has been developed to reduce the transmission of the idle-shake vibration induced by engine effectively and economically. A solenoid valve installed between PAEM and vacuum tank is on-off switched by the Pulse Width Modulate(PWM) control signal to decrease the dynamic stiffness of the engine mount. This paper presents the methodology to identify the optimal values of control parameters of a PAEM, i.e, turn-on timing and duty ratio of PWM signal for 6 different idle driving conditions. A scanning algorithm was first applied to the vehicle test to obtain the approximate optimal control parameters minimizing the vibration at front seat rail and at steering wheel. Then the PAEM system identification was fulfilled to find accurate optimal control parameters by using multi-layer neural networks of Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm with vehicle test data.

  • A novel pneumatic artificial muscle actuator (PAM actuator), which has achieved increased popularity to provide the advantages such as high strength and high power/weight ratio, low cost, compactness, ease of maintenance, cleanliness, readily available and cheap power source, inherent safety and mobility assistance to humans performing tasks, has been regarded during the recent decades as an interesting alternative to hydraulic and electric actuators. In order to realize satisfactory control performance, a variable damper Magneto Rheological Brake (MRB), Is equipped to the Joint of the manipulator. Superb mixture of conventional PID controller and a phase plane switching control method brings us a novel controller. This proposed controller is appropriate for a kind of plants with nonlinearity, uncertainties and disturbances. The experiments were carried out in practical PAM manipulator and the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm was demonstrated through experiments, which had proved that the stability of the manipulator can be improved greatly in a high gain control by using MRB with phase plane switching control method and without regard for the changes of external inertia loads.

  • Stable and comfortable walking supports, which can reduce the body weight load partially, are needed for the recovering patients from neurologic disease and orthopedic procedures. In this paper, the development of a manipulator of rehabilitation robot for the patients with walking disabilities are studied. A force controller using pneumatic actuators is designed and implemented to the human friendly rehabilitation robot considering the safety of patients, reliability of the system, effectiveness of the unloading control and economic maintenance of the system. The mechanism of the unloading manipulator is devised to improve the sensibility for the movement of the patients such as direction and velocity. For the unloading force control, fuzzy control algorithm is adopted to reduce the partial body weight and suppress the unwanted fluctuation of the body weight load to the weak legs due to the unnatural working of the patients with walking disabilities. The effectiveness of the force control is experimentally demonstrated.
