Torque ripples generate mechanical vibration at low speed and acoustic noise at high speed. The back emf harmonics of a PM synchronous motor is one of the main sources of torque ripples. To reduce torque ripples resulting from back emf harmonics, dq-axis harmonic currents that reduce the torque ripples are generally compensated to the current controller. Harmonic current compensation is effective at low speed, but it is not applicable at high speed because of the limited bandwidth of the current controller. In this study, dq-axis harmonic voltage compensation that can reduce torque ripples at high speed is proposed. The dq-axis harmonic voltages are calculated from the motor speed and the dq-axis harmonic currents. The effectiveness of the proposed method in reducing torque ripple is verified by a simulation and experiments.

This paper proposes a new adaptive speed controller for the speed control of a surface-permanent magnet synchronous motor. The proposed adaptive controller is very insensitive to model parameter and load torque variations since it does not require any accurate information on the motor parameter and load torque values. Moreover, the stability of the proposed control system is analytically proven. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed adaptive speed controller, simulation and experimental results are shown under motor parameter and load torque variations. It is clearly validated that the proposed speed regulator can precisely control the speed of permanent magnet synchronous motors.

This study presents a stable start-up strategy for v/f scalar-controlled permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs). The v/f-controlled PMSMs easily lose synchronism under low-speed conditions if an insufficient stator voltage is applied to the machine due to errors in measured motor parameters and inverter nonlinearity, such as inverter dead time and on-state voltage drop. The proposed method adopts the I/f control method to ensure a stable start at low speeds and then switches to the v/f control method at medium speeds. A smooth transition method from I/f control to v/f control is proposed to minimize the oscillation of the stator current and rotor speed during transition. Moreover, the stability of the I/f and v/f control methods is analyzed using a small-signal model. Simulation and experimental results are provided to verify the performance of the proposed control strategy.

In this paper, a nonlinear controller is proposed to track the desired velocity and to cancel sinusoidal disturbances. The proposed method consists of a velocity tracking controller and internal model principles (IMPs). For the design of the velocity tracking controller, mechanical and electrical dynamic controllers are independently designed. For the mechanical dynamics, the velocity tracking controller generates the desired quadrature current to track the desired velocity. The current tracking controller is designed to guarantee the desired quadrature current and to regulate the direct current. Therefore, the proposed velocity tracking controller has a field-oriented control. Since the controllers of the mechanical and electrical dynamics are independently designed, the stability of the closed-loop system is demonstrated using passivity. Since both the cogging torque and DC current errors act as sinusoidal disturbances in PMSM, we use four add-on type IMPs that preserve the merits and performance of the pre-designed controller without sacrificing the closed-loop stability. The performance of the proposed method is validated via simulations.
This paper proposes the dead time effect compensation algorithm using proportional resonant controller in pulse width modulation inverter of motor drive. To avoid a short circuit in the dc link, the dead time of the switch device is surely required. However, the dead time effect causes the phase current distortions, torque pulsations, and degradations of control performance. To solve these problems, the output current including ripple components on the synchronous reference frame and stationary reference frame are analyzed in detail. As a results, the distorted synchronous d-and q-axis currents contain the 6th, 12th, and the higher harmonic components due to the influence of dead time effect. In this paper, a new dead time effect compensation algorithm using proportional resonant controller is also proposed to reduce the output current harmonics due to the dead time and nonlinear characteristics of the switching devices. The proposed compensation algorithm does not require any additional hardware and the offline experimental measurements. The experimental results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed dead time effect compensation algorithm.

This paper presents an advanced method for an initial pole position estimation of a Permanent Magnet Linear Synchronous Motor(PMLSM) that has an accurate incremental encoder for servo applications but does not have Hall sensors as a magnetic pole sensor. By appropriately using the secant method as a numerical method the proposed algorithm finds either of two zero force positions and then the correct d-axis by applying a q-axis test current. It only requires the tuned current controller and the relative position information md so it can be simply applicable to a rotary PMSM. The experimental results show the validity of the proposed method, which has an excellent performance with respect to an accurate pole position estimation under the minimal moving distance(average of about 85㎛) during the estimation process.

This paper proposes the fuzzy logic based vector control method for a Surface Mounted Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor(SMPMSM) used in the elevators. The gain of a conventional PI speed controller in the elevator drive system can not be usually set high due to mechanical resonances, therefore its performance becomes deteriorated. There have been many methods to solve above problems such as an acceleration feedback in the speed controller. However, the above methods have defects that parameter information is demanded. In this paper', a Fuzzy controller(FC) is adopted in the elevator drive system. The performance of a fuzzy controller is compared with a PI controller in the no load and load conditions by simulation and experiments.

Low costed position sensor or sensorless control method is generally used in the motor control for home appliance because of the material cost and manufacture standard restriction. In conventional sensorless method, the stator resistance and back-EMF coefficient are varied by the motor speed and load torque variation. Therefore, position error occurred when the motor is operated by sensorless control method because of these variations. In this paper, the compensation method is proposed for sensorless position error using 2 hall sensors.

In this paper, slot less type high-speed and compact motor was designed. it was selected through change of stator coil distribution for the optimal performance of the motor. In this paper, designed motor was expected to be very vulnerable to heat dissipation in a compact motor. Therefore, to ensure reliability in the design result, winding and permanent magnet damage caused by the losses of motor was analyzed by thermal analysis and demagnetization analysis. Using the result, whether motor burnout was confirmed by motor performance degradation and insulation breakdown.
