  • After radical excision of a tumor in the maxillofacial area, functional and esthetic reconstruction is needed, including flap surgery. Among the many etiologies of flap failure, venous thrombosis is one of the most frequent. Heparin is used routinely in the effort to avoid development of venous thrombosis. In rare cases, heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) type II occurs due to exposure to heparin. Heparin attached to platelet factor 4 forms a PF4/heparin-immunoglobulin G immune complex on platelet surfaces. This complex activates platelets, which leads to multiple coagulation in venous and arterial blood. We report here on a rare occurrence of HIT type II following fibula free flap surgery.

  • Theoretical models based on modern interpretations of the morphology and interactions of cement hydration products are developed for prediction of the mechanical properties of hydrated cement paste (hcp). The models are based on the emerging nanostructural vision of calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) morphology, and account for the intermolecular interactions between nano-scale calcium C-S-H particles. The models also incorporate the effects of capillary porosity and microcracking within hydrated cement paste. The intrinsic modulus of elasticity and tensile strength of hydrated cement paste are determined based on intermolecular interactions between C-S-H nano-particles. Modeling of fracture toughness indicates that frictional pull-out of the micro-scale calcium hydroxide (CH) platelets makes major contributions to the fracture energy of hcp. A tensile strength model was developed for hcp based on the linear elastic fracture mechanics theories. The predicted theoretical models are in reasonable agreements with empirical models developed based on the experimental performance of hcp.

  • Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura(ITP) is an autoimmune disease which is related to antibodies against platelets. More than 95% of the patients progress into chronic type. Usually, IPT patients suffer form hypodermal bleeding, purpura, decreases in platelet counts. Purpura of legs, nosebleeds and oral ulcer may occur. In this study, herbal medicine, acupuncture and moxibustion in conjunction with cupping were applied to IPT patient based on the oriental medicine principle such as Lihyulyanggangeonbi-tang(理血養肝建脾湯). After the treatment, the patient improved better, and had no more inconvenient symptoms according to the follow-up research. So the result shows the possibility that oriental medical treatment may be applied to the IPT patient clinically.

  • Hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes and low platelets (HELLP) syndrome, a variant presentation of severe preeclampsia/eclampsia is associated with high maternal morbidity and mortality. Despite several advantages to the use of epidural analgesia for the management of labor pain in preeclamptic parturients, this procedure is relatively contraindicated in the presence of severe thrombocytopenia. Determining the pain management of choice depends on the parturient's condition, fetal well-being, and the urgency of the situation. We report a safe case of epidural analgesia in a HELLP syndrome parturient with severe thrombocytopenia for labor pain management without any neurologic complications or epidural hematoma.

  • It has been known that pinusolide isolated from Biota orientalis inhibits specifically [$^3$H] PAF binding to and PAF-induced aggregation of rabbit platelets in vitro. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the effects of pinusolide on hypotension and bronchoconstriction due to PAF. PAF(i.v.) in doses of 0.01 to 0.3 $\mu\textrm{g}$/kg induced a dose-dependent hypotension without tachyphylaxis in rat. Pinusolide(5~20 mg/kg, i.v.) inhibited PAF(0.03 $\mu\textrm{g}$/kg, i.v.)-induced hypotension dose-dependently, while it failed to block the hypotensive action of histamine, serotonin and acetylcholine. It inhibited bronchoconstriction and cutaneous vascular permeability induced by PAF in anesthetized guinea-pigs and rats, respectively, but it showed no inhibitory effect on the increase in bronchial resistance by histamine and acetylcholine. These results strongly suggest that in vivo pinusolide acts as a selective antagonist of PAF.

  • Nanostructured materials are attracting increased interest and application. Exciting perspectives may be offered by electrical insulation. Epoxy/Organoclay nanocomposites may find new and upgraded applications in the electrical industry, replacing conventional insulation to provide improved performances in electric power apparatus, e.g, high voltage motor/generator stator winding insulation, dry mold transformer, etc. In the paper work, the electrical and thermal properties of epoxy/organoclay nanocomposites materials were studied. The electrical insulation characteristics were analyzed through the permittivity characteristics. by analyzing the permittivity spectra, it was found that dielectric constant becomes smaller with increase frequency and becomes larger with increase temperature. This indicates restriction of molecular motion and strong bonds at the epoxy/organoclay nanocomposites. The morphology of nanocomposites obtained was examined using TEM and X-ray diffraction. It has been shown that the presence of polar groups leads to an increased gallery distance and partial exfoliation. Nevertheless, full exfoliation of clay platelets has not been achieved.

  • Ethylene glycol was given orally in 6 crossbred male cow calves @ 12 ml/kg b wt for 2 days continuously to develop acute nephrotoxicity and monitor blood chemicals profile in affected calves. Progressive depression, hypersalivation, ataxia, incoordination, staggering gait, grinding of teeth, recumbency, coma, convulsions and death were prominent symptoms in affected calves. Respiration and pulse rates were increased whereas body temperature and rumen movements were low. Haematological investigations revealed increase in total erythrocyte count, platelets count and packed cell volume till death and total leukocyte count up to day 3 which decreased on day 4 and 5. These calves revealed azotaemia, reduction in calcium, chloride and potassium and rise in sodium and AST, ALT and alkaline phosphatase enzymes activity.

  • The steam distillate obtained from sawdust of Thujopsis dolabrata var. hondai was fractionated by centrifugal thin-film evaporation. and then the fractions were investigated against antiplatelet activity using washed rabbit platelets in vitro. The biologically active constituent of T. dolabrata sawdust was isolated by silica gel column chromatography and HPLC and characterized as carvacrol by various spectral analysis ($^{1}H$, $^{13}C$-NMR and GC/MS studies). • Lipophilic Fraction (LF) from Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer strongly inhibited human platelet aggregations induced by thrombin. When platelets were prelabeled with 5-hydroxy[G-$^3$H]-tryptamine (serotonin) and then stimulated by thrombin, LF inhibited the release of serotonin in a dose-dependent manner. From this result, we suggest that LF have antiplatelet and antimigraine functions by inhibiting the release of serotonin.

  • Aqueous fractions from Korean red ginseng inhibited the phosphorylations of 40 KD and 20 KD polypeptides which were induced by phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate (100 nM) in human platelets. Much more carbohydrates were contained in the aqueous fractions than proteins. An aqueous fraction extracted with methanol, mainly, consists of glycoproteins, molecular weights of which were below 18 KD. We may infer that the aqueous fraction from Korean red ginseng do antitumorous and antiplatelet functions.
