  • This paper presents the analytical results of local buckling of orthotropic I-shape compression members. Employing the equilibrium approach, the characteristic equation for local buckling of I-shape compression member is derived. Using the derived equation, the minimum buckling coefficients with respect to the ratio of width to thickness for the I-shape column are suggested as a graphical form. In addition, the dominant plate component initiating the local buckling of I-shape column is also identified by using the approximate solution and the results are plotted with dotted line on the minimum bucking coefficient curve.

  • A kinetic theory analysis is made of low-speed gas flows around a micro-plate. The Boltzmann equation simplified by a collision model is solved by means of a finite difference approximation with the discrete ordinate method. The method does not suffer from statistical noise which is common in particle based methods and requires much less amount of computational effort. Calculations are made for flows around a micro-scale flat plate with a finite length of 20 microns. The method is assessed by comparing the results with those from several different methods and available experimental data.

  • This paper is concerned with the active vibration control of flexible plate system using $H_2$ controller. The main objective of this paper is to propose the system identification for estimation dynamic equation of plate vibration system and control algorithm such as $H_2$ controller design. In this paper dynamic equation is determined by considering only the first, second, and third vibration modes, and experiments confirm that this model works well. The $H_2$ control algorithm is proposed and implemented on the experimental setup to show their efficacy. Effectiveness and performance of the designed controller was verified by both simulation and experiment result.

  • In general, a structure that is composed with plates has lower bending strength and stiffness than solid structure. To solve this problem, reinforced structures have been used. And we need rules to choose best shape for each using conditions. In this paper, simple equation that expresses equivalent thickness with respect to parameters by substituting results from Finite Element Analysis to normal plate displacement equation was derived.

  • A numerical analysis between the piston and cylinder in swash plate type hydraulic piston pumps under reciprocating motion is presented. A finite difference method and the Newton-Raphson method are used simultaneously to solve the Reynolds equation In the clearance and the equation of motion for the piston. The tapered piston showed stable behaviors regardless of their initial eccentric conditions in the clearance and the reciprocating speed affect highly on the piston end trajectories. Therefore, the results of present study can be used other types fluid machineries.

  • The general equation of equilibrium is presented for a stiffened plate on which the stiffeners having rectangular cross-sections are attached by one or both sides with arbitrarily angles. The principle of minimum potential energy is applied using the concept of adjusted-centroid to derive the equilibrium equation for the stiffened plate. Equivalent rigidities in the present theory are in good agreement with the experiments by the vibration method.

  • Apartment building floor with a damping layer can be modeled as a sandwich plate. In order to reduce low frequency noise more efficiently due to heavy impact on such a floor, thickness of the damping layer needs to be optimized at the design stage. Modal loss factors are determined in this paper by RKU equation which is popular In sandwich plate theories. Optimum damping layer thickness determined at each mode is weighted so that several modes in the frequency range of interest can be included in a more systematic way. Furthermore, to reflect frequency-dependent characteristics of complex stiffness of the damping layer, an iteration method is proposed in finding modal frequencies.

  • We study thickness-shear (TSh) free vibrations of an unbounded, laminated elastic plate with three layers of different materials. One of the two interfaces is slightly weakened as described by the shear-lag model that allows the displacement to be discontinuous across the interface. A frequency equation is obtained from the linear theory of elasticity. A perturbation solution of the frequency equation is obtained from which the frequency shifts of TSh modes due to the weakened interface can be calculated. It is shown that the frequency shifts of TSh modes of different orders are different, and they satisfy different conditions when different interfaces are weakened. These conditions are obtained which can potentially be used as criteria for determining specifically which interface is weakened.

  • Visco-elastic material and thin metals were adhered to plate structures, forming the composite components that are similar to the sandwich plates, called constrained layered damped (CLD) plates. Constrained layer damping has been utilized for years to reduce vibration, and advances in computation and finite element analysis software have enabled various problems to be solved by computer. However, some problems consume much calculation time. The vibration equation for a constrained layered damped plate with simple supports and an impact force is obtained theoretically herein. Then, the results of the vibration equation are compared with those obtained using the finite element method (FEM) software, ABAQUS, to verify the accuracy of the theory. Finally, the 3M constrained layer damper SJ-2052 was attached to plates to form constrained layered damped plates, and the vibration equation was used to elucidate the damping effects and vibration characteristics.
