  • This study has been conducted to provide a management plan for recycled products (plastic wastes) by identifying hazardous substances present in it and conducting exposure assessment. The concentration of 7 heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Pb, Zn) was analyzed. Exposure scenario was assumed by the consumption of kimchi made in a recycled plastic bucket. According to the analysis, all of the analyzed samples were within the food code standard level except one sample (137.03 mg/kg, sum of Cd, $Cr^{6+}$, Pb and Hg). In leaching test, all of heavy metals were within the leaching standard (Standards specifications of utensil and container-Packing). In an oral exposure test, Fe, Pb and Zn were detected in cabbages and were below PMTDI (Provisional Maximum Tolerable Daily Intake). As one of the recycled plastic buckets exceeded the standard level, we conclude not to recommend the recycled plastic buckets for cooking purpose.

  • Plastic wastes generated from household waste are separated by mixed discharge with foreign substances, and recycling is relatively low. In this study, the effect of the ratio and content of mixed plastic waste coarse aggregate(MPWCA)s and mixed plastic waste fine aggregate(MPWFA)s filled with blast furnace slag fine powder on the slump and compressive strength of concrete was evaluated experimentally. The MPWCAs were found to have a similar fineness modulus, but have a single particle size distribution with a smaller particle size compared to coarse aggregates. However, the MPWFAs were found to have a single particle size distribution with a larger fineness modulus and particle size compared to fine aggregates. Meanwhile, the effect of improving the density and filling pores by the blast furnace slag fine power was found to be greater in the MPWFA compared to the MPWCA. As the amount of the mixed plastic waste aggregate(MPWA)s increased, the slump and compressive strength of concrete decreased. In particular, the lower the slump and compressive strength of concrete was found to decrease the greater the amount of MPWFA than MPWCA when the amount of MPWA was the same. This is because of the entrapped air and voids formed under the angular- and ROD-shaped aggregates among the MPWFAs. On the other hand, the addition of the admixture and the increase in the unit amount of cement were found to be effective in improving the compressive strength of the concrete with MPWAs.

  • The pyrolysis characteristics of celluloses and plastics, which are the principal materials contributing to the municipal solid wastes(MSWs), was investigated with a thermal gravimetric analysis reaction system. The experiments were carried out in a nitrogen atmosphere in the temperature range of 400~900K at various experimental conditions. Also, a modified pyrolysis model for compressed MSWs has been proposed. Varing the heating rate to 20, 30, 40K/min, reaction orders of MSWs' main component were around 1.1~1.9, activation energies were 117~166kJ/mol for celluloses and 187~239kJ/mol for plastics. Char yield was proportional to the heating rate, particle size, and compressed ratio. The model proposed in this study, which is applying Arrhenius equation and thermodynamics, is closer to the experimental results than the conventional model.

  • Although the generation of waste flat panel displays in Korea is expected to exceed one million sets in 2016, a comprehensive recycling technology has not yet been developed for effective recovery of valuable materials from the wastes, rendering to outshine the national prestige as a global leader in display industries. The overall aim of this study was to analyze the statistical data of various valuable materials and their ratio after dismantling 40-inch and 42-inch sized waste LCDs. The analysis results showed that plastic portion of the wastes was about 22% and the portion of PCB (Print Circuit Board) part was about 9% by weight whereas panel part was about 34% and leftovers including metals totalled about 35% by weight. Based on the analytical results, a higher value recycling process could be proposed with advanced material separation techniques.

  • It is necessary to dynamic recognition system with real time loading height and pressure of the loading waste, the drying of wood, batteries, and plastic wastes, which are representative compositional wastes, and the carbonization changes on the surface. The dynamic context awareness service constituted a platform based on Universal Middleware system using BCN convergence communication service as a Ambient SDK model. A context awareness system should be constructed to determine the cause of the fire based on the analysis data of fermentation heat point with natural ignition from the load waste. Furthermore, a real-time dynamic service platform that could be apply to the configuration of scenarios for each type from early warning fire should be built using Universal Middleware. Thus, this issue for Internet of Things realize recognition platform for analyzing low temperature fired fire possibility data should be dynamically configured and presented.

  • The mixed plastic waste generated from households after hand-picking and/or mechanical sorting processes amounts to 1,750,000 ton in 2006, and most of these waste are finally end up with landfill and/or incineration due to the lacks of separation technologies and economical reasons. The mixed plastic wastes can not be used as raw materials for chemical and/or thermal recycling processes because of their high content of PVC(upto 4.0 wt.%). In the present research, gravity separation system has been developed to remove PVC from the mixed plastic waste and to recover the PO-type plastics. This system mainly consists of air classification, magnetic separation, one-step crushing, feeding system at fixed rate and wet-type gravity separation system. The gravity system based on centrifugal separation has been developed at capacity of 0.5 ton/h and it consists of mixing, precleaning, separation, dewatering, recovery system and wastewater treatment system, etc. The main objective of this process is to achieve high separation efficiency of polyolefins with less than 0.3 wt.% PVC content and less than 10% moisture content in the final products. In addition, a crushing unit of with 8 rotor system is also developed to improve the crushing efficiency of soft-type plastics. The system with a capacity of 1.0 ton/h is developed and operational results are presented.

  • The amounts of radioactive wastes to be disposed in the medical institute have been increased due to development of radiation diagnosis and therapy rapidly. They are produced mostly by the very short lived radioisotopes such as $^{18}F$ used in PET/CT, $^{99m}Tc$, $^{123}I$, $^{125}I$ and $^{201}Tl$, etc. IAEA proposed a criteria for the clearance level of waste which depends on the individual ($10{\mu}Sv/y$) and collective dose (1 man-Sv/y), and concentration of each nuclide (IAEA Safety Series No 111-P-1.1, 1992 and IAEA RS-G-1.7, 2004). Radioactive wastes of $^{18}F$, $^{99m}Tc$, $^{123}I$, $^{125}I$ and $^{201}TI$ in the several types of container like Marinelli beaker, vial and plastic, were collected to measure the concentration of the waste of each nuclide in accordance with IAEA criteria. The measurement method and procedure of determining specific activity of the wastes using gamma emitters like MCA, gamma counter and beta emitters were developed. For the efficiency calibration of the detectors, CRM (certified reference material) which has the same dimension and shape was provided by Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS). Correction factor of the radioactivity decay was calculated based on the measurement results, and the consideration of mutual relation with theoretical equation. The result of this study will be proposed as ISO standard.
