  • This study was conducted to identify transition characteristics of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb) and to calculate bio-concentration factors (BCF) in the three perennial root medicinal plants, namely Codonopsis lanceolata (Deoduck), Platycodon grandiflorum (Balloon flower) and Panax ginseng (Korean ginseng) grown in major medicinal plant producing districts in Korea. Average BCF values ranged from 0.009~0.029 in As, 0.334~1.453 in Cd, and 0.021~0.023 in Pb in three perennial root medicinal plants. The BCF values increased in the order of ginseng (0.029) > deodeok (0.012) > balloon flower (0.009) for As, balloon flower (1.453) > deodeok (0.685) > ginseng (0.334) for Cd, and ginseng (0.023) > deodeok (0.022) > balloon flower (0.021) for Pb. The BCF values calculated in this study will be useful for predicting the uptake of heavy metal (loid)s. Further study on uptake and accumulation mechanism of toxic metal (loid)s by agricultural products is required to assess the human health risk associated with soil contamination.

  • In order to evaluate the effect of various cultural methods developed during last 30 years on grain yield of wheat and barley and structure of plant stand for uptake of nutrient and water, solar energy use and com-petitive capacity with weed, 10 kinds of cultural practices were compared in the clayey upland soil. Row fertilization is more effective for uptake of N,P and K than rotary fertilization. Weed occurrence was deeply related with width of non-seeded area in the row and affected yield decrease. Winter injury was more serious in the cultural practices with thick plant community than in those with isolated individual plant. Root distribution was more remarkable in drill seeding or broadcasting than row seeding and had positively correlated with water consumption of barley.

  • There are still many problems on the physiological role of silicon in rice plants, although, it has been reported that silicate slag is the most effective fertilizer for the improvement of Akiochi soils. This experiment is carried out to investigate the effect of silicate of the mineral nutrition uptake by rice plants, using Ca45, P32, C136, and Mn54. The obtained results are summerized as follows; 1. Contents of mineral nutrients except silicon were higher in the rice plant grown in minus Si-culture solution a than in plus Si-plot. 2. Transpiration amounts appeared to be greater in the low content plant of silicon. 3. The rate of translocation to shoot of each ion absorbed by roots depended on the rate of transpiration. 4. It seemed that only CI uptake was found small in minus Si-root. 5. Silicate fetilizer did not affect the solubility of mineral ions in soils.

  • Chitin and its derivatives have been introduced to tomato seedlings by direct mixing of chitin, chitosan, or chitooligosaccharides (CO) with soils, watering of chitosan or CO solutions to soils, or chitosan-coating of tomato seeds as a biomodulator of plant growth, and the growth of tomato plants was measured 30- and 45-day after seeding in the pots. The treatment of chitin and its derivatives promoted the growth of tomato plants in plant heights, shoot weight, maximum leaf length and number of leaves. By comparison in the contents of cellular inorganic nutrients in the plants, it was found out that chitin or chitosan treatments accelerated nitrogen and potassium uptake but inhibit calcium uptake, suggesting that chitin and its derivatives modulate absorption of inorganic nutrients through plant roots from environment.

  • Various types of organic materials could affect differently immobilization of cadmium (Cd) and its uptake by plant grown in soil. Therefore, this study was conducted to evaluate effect of different organic materials in reducing Cd phytoextractability in contaminated arable soil. To do this, rice straw and composted manure were selected as organic materials and applied at the rate of 0, 15, 30, and $45Mg\;ha^{-1}$ in Cd contaminated arable soil with $6.5mg\;kg^{-1}$ of total Cd. Radish (Raphanus sativa L.) was seeded and grown for 50 days to evaluate Cd phytoavailability with different organic materials. Composted manure was more effective to decrease $1M\;NH_4OAc$ extractable Cd concentration and increase pH of soil than rice straw. $One\;M\;NH_4OAc$ extractable Cd concentration significantly decreased with increasing application rate of composted manure. Tendency of Cd uptake by radish plant with application of different organic materials was similar to that of $1M\;NH_4OAc$ extractable Cd concentration and soil pH. Changes of soil pH with application of straw and composted might be one of factors to determine extractability and phytoavailability of Cd in this study. Radish yield significantly increased with up to $45Mg\;ha^{-1}$ of composted manure application but did not with straw application. In the view point of Cd phytoextractability and plant productivity, it is recommended to apply composted manure rather than straw in Cd contaminated arable soil.

  • To investigate the effect of Mycorrhiza (Glomus intradics) and Rhizobium inoculation on the N, P utilization and growth response of Alfalfa (Medicago saliva L.) and Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) in mixed sward, four treatments (non-inoculation, Control; Mycorrhiza inoculation: M; Rhizobium inoculation, R and Mycorrhiza and Rhizobium inoculation, M+R) were applied. The associated analyses were canied out on the early vegetative growth stage (DAS 56, 56 days after seeding) and on the early flowering stage (DAS 126). The decreased rate of total N and P content in soil, with advancing plant growth, was relatively higher in the M and M + R treatment than control. The content of availabie phosphorus in soil at DAS 126 increased by about 34 and 38 % in M and M+R treatment compared to control (189.2 mg PzOskg DM), while non-significant changes was observed in R treatment. Total N uptake and P uptake in the control at DAS 126 were 44.71 and 3.52 mglplant in mixed sward, respectively. About 71, 98 and 197 % of increases in total N uptake and 70, 72 and 11 1 % of increases in total P uptake were estimated in M, R and M+R treatment. Comparing to control, total dry matter yield significantly increased by 27, 33 and 53 %, and crude protein yield also by 78, 83 and 204 %, respectively, in M, R and M+R treatment. The present data indicated that mycorrhiza orland rhizobium inoculation improved N, P utilization of both alfalfa and perennial ryegrass plants, and consequently increased total yield (especially by dual inoculation, M+R). • This study was conducted to determine the cause of the occurence of marginal leaf chlorosis in ginseng plants (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer), and to determine its emersion in fields (practically) and in pots (experimentally). The following results were obtained. In the Present investigation, ginseng plants raised in acidic soil containing a high a moue t of Mn showed marginal leaf chlorosis. Henre it Ivas suggested that the shoot growth and root weights became grad gractually lower. The leaves having marginal leaf chlorosis contained low amounts of N, P,. Ca, Mg, and Na and the Fe/Mn ratios were low. There was a corresponding increase in Mn uptake. It was founrl that in soils where marginal leaf chlorisis occured the pH urar brlolv 4.2 to 4.9 and the Ca, Mg and Na content was decreased thus effectively increasing the available manganese in the soil. The Mn/Fe ratios in the yellow leaf margins of ginseng Plants affected by the Mn toxicity was over 2.0 compared to the general Mn/Fe ratio of 0.50 for healthily leaves, stems and roots. Typically when ginseng plants grow fields having soil with a pH below about 5.0, there tenor to be an uptake of excess Mn. When ginseng plants are grown in a nutrient sand culture solution It with an increased Mn concentration, they accumulate large amounts of Mn in the roots and in the shoots. In both casts marginal leaf chlorosis appeared in the emersions. In the Present investigation, ginseng plants raised in acidic soil and containing a high amount of Mn showed marginal leaf chlorosis.

  • On account of exchanging main process from chemical precipitation for MLE(Modified Ludzark-Ettinger), an external carbon source was required for supplementation of carbon source shortage that was needed biological denitrification in the S sewage treatment plant(S-STP). In this study, NUR(nitrate uptake rate), OUR(oxygen uptake rate) test and a field application test was conducted for the applicability assessment of Terephtalic acid(TPA) by-product contained about 4.7% acetate as alternative external carbon source. As the results, TPA by-product shows more rapid acclimation than methanol, 8.24 mg ${NO_3}^--N/g$ VSS/hr specific denitrification rate, 3.70 g $COD_{Cr}/g\;NO_3$ C/N ratio and 99.4% readily biodegradable COD contents. In the results of field application, the nutrient removal efficiency was high and effluent T-N concentration is 8.2 mg/L. It is concluded that TPA by-product is the proper alternative external carbon source.
