Considered is non-symmetric contact traction induced by the tilting of a contact body and/or by a far field bulk tensile load to the other body. The problem is under the regime of plane strain. General profile of the contact end is incorporated and partial slip condition is supposed. As an example contact configuration, an indentation of a punch with rounded corners onto a half plane is studied. The variation of the internal stress field due to the tilting and the bulk tension is investigated. An edge crack problem is analyzed to examine the influence of the non-symmetric traction. It is shown that the tilting of a punch does not influence the behaviour of the crack. Rather, the effect of the bulk tension on the cracking behaviour is found considerable.

The aim of this paper was to examine the continuous and discontinuous contact problems between the functionally graded (FG) layer pressed with a uniformly distributed load and homogeneous half plane using an analytical method and FEM. The FG layer is made of non-homogeneous material with an isotropic stress-strain law with exponentially varying properties. It is assumed that the contact at the FG layer-half plane interface is frictionless, and only the normal tractions can be transmitted along the contacted regions. The body force of the FG layer is considered in the study. The FG layer was positioned on the homogeneous half plane without any bonds. Thus, if the external load was smaller than a certain critical value, the contact between the FG layer and half plane would be continuous. However, when the external load exceeded the critical value, there was a separation between the FG layer and half plane on the finite region, as discontinuous contact. Therefore, there have been some steps taken in this study. Firstly, an analytical solution for continuous and discontinuous contact cases of the problem has been realized using the theory of elasticity and Fourier integral transform techniques. Then, the problem modeled and two-dimensional analysis was carried out by using ANSYS package program based on FEM. Numerical results for initial separation distance and contact stress distributions between the FG layer and homogeneous half plane for continuous contact case; the start and end points of separation and contact stress distributions between the FG layer and homogeneous half plane for discontinuous contact case were provided for various dimensionless quantities including material inhomogeneity, distributed load width, the shear module ratio and load factor for both methods. The results obtained using FEM were compared with the results found using analytical formulation. It was found that the results obtained from analytical formulation were in perfect agreement with the FEM study.

A continuum-based design sensitivity analysis (DSA) method fur non-shape problems is developed for geometrically nonlinear elastic structures. The non-shape problem is characterized by the design variables that are not associated with the domain of system like sizing, material property, loading, and so on. Total Lagrangian formulation with the Green-Lagrange strain and the second Piola-Kirchhoff stress is employed to describe the geometrically nonlinear structures. The spatial domain is discretized using the 4-node isoparametric plane stress/strain elements. The resulting nonlinear system is solved using the Newton-Raphson iterative method. To take advantage of the derived analytical sensitivity In topology optimization, a fast and efficient design sensitivity analysis method, adjoint variable method, is employed and the material property of each element is selected as non-shape design variable. Combining the design sensitivity analysis method and a gradient-based design optimization algorithm, an automated design optimization method is developed. The comparison of the analytical sensitivity with the finite difference results shows excellent agreement. Also application to the topology design optimization problem suggests a very good insight for the layout design.

The vibration of a semi-circular pipe conveying fluid is studied when the pipe is clamped at both ends. To consider the geometric nonlinearity, this study adopts the Lagrange strain theory for large deformation and the extensible dynamics based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory for slenderness assumption. By using the Hamilton principle, the non-linear partial differential equations are derived for the in-plane motions of the pipe, considering the fluid inertia forces as a kind of non-conservative forces. The linear and non-linear terms in the governing equations are compared with those in the previous study, and some significant differences are discussed. To investigate the dynamic characteristics of the system, the discretized equations of motion are derived from the Galerkin method. The natural frequencies varying with the flow velocity are computed from the two cases, which one is the linear problem and the other is the linearized problem in the neighborhood of the equilibrium position. Finally, the time responses at various flow velocities are directly computed by using the generalized-$\alpha$ method. From these results, we should consider the geometric nonlinearity to analyze dynamics of a semi-circular pipe conveying fluid more precisely.

The GEOKST program was used to solve the tunnel example problem. The package can solve such geotechnical problem as excavation, embankment, foundations, etc., in which the soil can be modeled by various elastoplastic geomaterial models. The main objective was to consider the effects of excavation depth to the face of the tunnel on the stability of the ground and support system. Depended on the strength of the ground materials, the limit excavation depth without any support system could be established by analyzing three-dimensional excavation problem. In this given example problem, the strengths of the ground materials were enough for the stability of the tunnel without any support system up to fairly deep excavation and the maximum tunnel section displacement was stabilized as the excavation proceed. The asymptotic value was approximately the same as that of the plane strain analysis. Thus, assuming the plain strain condition and simulation the actual excavation procedure, the maximum tunnel section displacement was caculated after final step. The maximum calculated displacement occured at the top section of the tunnel geometry and was about 8mm.

This paper reports a potential problem in the electrical performance of the silicide film to silicon contacts with respect to the scaling trend in integrated circuit (IC) devices. The effects of elastic strain on the agglomeration of the coherent silicide film embedded in an infinite matrix are studied employing continuum linear elasticity and finite-difference numerical method. The interface atomic diffusion is taken to be the dominant transport mechanism where both capillarity and elastic strain are considered for the driving forces. Under plane strain condition with elastically homogeneous and anisotropic system with cubic symmetry, the dilatational misfit and the tetragonal misfit in the direction parallel to the film thickness are considered. The numerical results on the shape evolution agree with the known trend that the equilibrium aspect ratio of the film increases with the elastic strain intensity. When the elastic strain intensity is taken to be only a function of the film size, the flat film morphology with a large aspect ratio becomes increasingly unstable since the equilibrium aspect ratio decreases, as the film scales. The shape evolution results in a large decrease in contact to silicon area, and may deteriorate the electrical performances.

The buckling of two elastic layers bonded to a semi-infinite substrate under a transverse compressive plane strain is investigated. Incremental deformation theory, which considers the effect of the initial stress on the incremental stress field, is employed to describe the buckling behavior of both two isotropic layers and the semi-infinite substrate. The problem is converted to an eigenvalue-eigenvector case, from which the critical buckling strain and the buckling wavelength are obtained. The results are presented on the effects of the layer geometries and material properties on the buckling behavior.
The paper analyzes the problem of torsion in an adhesive non-tubular bonded single-lap joint. The joint considered consists of two thin rectangular section beams bonded together along a side surface. Assuming the materials involved to be governed by linear elastic laws, equilibrium and compatibility equations were used to arrive at an integro-differential relation whose solution makes it possible to determine torsional moment section by section in the bonded joint between the two beams. This is then used to determine the predominant stress and strain field at the beam-adhesive interface (stress field along the direction perpendicular to the interface plane, equivalent to the applied torsional moment and the corresponding strain field) and the joint's elastic strain (absolute and relative rotations of the bonded beam cross sections). All the relations presented were obtained in closed form. Results obtained theoretically are compared with those given by a three dimensional finite element numerical model. Theoretical and numerical analysis agree satisfactorily.
In this article the frequency response of magneto-flexo-electric rotary porous (MFERP) nanobeams subjected to thermal loads has been investigated through nonlocal strain gradient elasticity theory. A quasi-3D beam model beam theory is used for the expositions of the displacement components. With the aid of Hamilton's principle, the governing equations of MFERP nanobeams are obtained. Further, administrating an analytical solution the frequency problem of MFERP nanobeams are solved. In addition the numerical examples are also provided to evaluate the effect of nonlocal strain gradient parameter, hygro thermo environment, flexoelectric effect, in-plane magnet field, volume fraction of porosity and angular velocity on the dimensionless eigen frequency.
