  • This paper proposes a method for estimating the distance betweeen vehicles in a moving situation using the image ratio of the distance between the tail lamps of a front vehicle. The actual distance between the tail lamps of a front vehicle was transmitted by LED tail lamps using visible light communication. As the distance between the front vehicle and the rear vehicle changes, it calculates the ratio of the pixel width between the tail lamps of the front vehicle projected on the image. The calculated values are used to derive a distance-mapping function through non-linear regression technique. Then, the distance between vehicles in the moving situation is estimated based on this function.

  • We propose three multi-level modulation codes of the code rate 1/2 for holographic data storage considered as a promising candidate for next generation storage systems. Since a pixel with multi-levels can represent more than 1 bit, it is possible to increase the storage capacity and have many codewords. Thus, we can choose a code that the minimum distance is as far as possible. When we compare the codes with the code rate 1/2, the performance of the code with small number of levels is better than that of large number of levels.

  • In this study, the effect of important parameters such as the pixel size and number of a CCD, the object distance, the wavelength of laser, and the particle diameter on the depth of focus in digital in-line particle holography were investigated. The depth of focus in several different cases was calculated using simulation holograms and detailed description of the depth of focus in digital particle holography was presented. The depth of focus is directly proportional to the object distance and the particle size. With the increase of the wavelength of laser, the depth of focus is decreased. The depth of focus is also inversely proportional to the pixel size and number of a CCD. Using the data of depth of focus from simulation holograms and a data-fitting software, we obtained the prediction equations of depth of focus for typical CCD cameras. Finally, the prediction equations of depth of focus in digital particle holography were verified by investigating real holograms of the calibration target in different cases and satisfied agreement between measured values and predicted values was confirmed.

  • The characteristics of the satellite image quality parameters driven by satellite imaging instrument are investigated. Since the satellite image is directly produced by the satellite imaging instrument, the satellite image quality depends on the imager performance highly. This is why the imager performance parameters are considered as an important part of the satellite image quality parameters. The imager performance parameters consist of spectral band parameters, ground sample distance(GSD) parameters, swath width parameters, imager Modulation Transfer Function (MTF), imager Signal to Noise Ratio(SNR), radiometric response characteristics parameters, pixel registration, and imager calibration.

  • The Satellite Electro-Optic Payload System needsspecial requirements with the conditions of limited power consumption and the space environment of solar radiation. The acquired image quality should be mainly depend on the GSD (Ground Sampled Distance), SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio), and MTF (Modulation Transfer Function). On the well-manufactured sensor level, the thermal noise is removed on ASP (Analog Signal Processing) using the CDS (Corrective Double Sampling); the noise signal from the image sensor can be reduced from the offset signals based on the pre-pixels and the dark-pixels. The non-uniformity shall be corrected with gain, offset, and correction parameter of the image sensor pixel characteristic on the sensor control system. This paper describes the SNR enhancement method of the satellite EOS payload using the mentioned noise remove processes on the system design and operation, which is verified by tests and simulations.

  • Recent evolution of computer technology enhances the effectiveness of CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis for the 3-dimensional complex transport phenomena including turbulent flows. Cheaper and easier than laser and ultra-sonic methods, the windows simulator name by CAMSI(Computer-Aided Management of Stereo Images) has been developed in order to implement the 3-dimensional image using a disparity histogram extracted from left and right stereo images. In our program using the area-based method, the matching pixel finding methods consist of SSD(Sum of Squared Distance), SAD(Sum of Absolute Distance), NCC(Normalized Correlation Coefficient) and MPC(Matching Pixel Count). On performing the program, stereo images on different window sizes for various matching pixel finding methods are compared reasonably. When the image has a small noise, SSD on small window size is more effective. Whereas there is much noise, NCC or MPC is more effective than SSD. CAMSI from the present study will be much helpful to implement the complex objects and to analyze 3-dimensional CFD around them.

  • An algorithm for detecting a line segment in an image is presented using incremental pixel extension. We use a different approach from conventional algorithms, such as the Hough transform approach and the line segment grouping approach. The Canny edge is calculated and an arbitrary point is selected among the edge elements. After the arbitrary point is selected, a base line approximating the line segment is calculated and edge pixels within an arbitrary radius are selected. A weighted value is assigned to each edge pixel, which is selected by using the error of the distance and the direction between the pixel and the base line. A line segment is extracted by Jilting a line using the weighted least square method after determining whether selected pixels are linked or delinked using the sum comparison of the weights. The proposed algorithm is compared with two other methods and results show that our algorithm is faster and can detect the real line segment.

  • It is challenging to detect foreground objects when background includes an illumination variation, shadow or structural variation due to its motion. Basically pixel-based background models including codebook-based modeling suffer from statistical randomness of each pixel. This paper proposes an algorithm that incorporates Markov random field model into pixel-based background modeling to achieve more accurate foreground detection. Under the assumptions the distance between the pixel on the input imaging and the corresponding background model and the difference between the scene estimates of the spatio-temporally neighboring pixels are exponentially distributed, a recursive approach for estimating the MRF regularizing parameters is proposed. The proposed method alternates between estimating the parameters with the intermediate foreground detection and estimating the foreground detection with the estimated parameters, after computing it with random initial parameters. Extensive experiment is conducted with several videos recorded both indoors and outdoors to compare the proposed method with the standard codebook-based algorithm.

  • In this paper, we propose a method to classify the types of vehicle as full, medium, or small size. The proposed method is composed of three steps. First, after obtaining vehicle contour from template candidate image, edge distance template is created by distance transform of the vehicle's contour. Second, the vehicle type of input image is classified as the type of template which has minimal edge distance with input image. The edge distance value means the measurement of distance between input image and template at each pixel which is part of vehicle contour. Experimental results demonstrate that our method presented a good performance of 80% about test images.

  • To detect electrical faults of a TFT (Thin Film Transistor) panel for the LCD (Liquid Crystal Display), techniques of converting electric field to an image are used One of them is the PDLC (polymer-dispersed liquid crystal) modulator which changes light transmittance under electric field. The advantage of PDLC modulator in the electric field detection is that it can be used without physically contacting the TFT panel surface. Specific pattern signals are applied to the data and gate electrodes of the panel to charge the pixel electrodes and the image sensor detects the change of transmittance of PDLC positioned in proximity distance above the pixel electrodes. The image represents the status of electric field reflected on the PDLC so that the characteristic of the PDLC itself plays an important role to accurately quantify the defects of TFT panel. In this paper, the image of the PDLC modulator caused by the change of electric field of the pixel electrodes on the TFT panel is acquired and how the characteristics of PDLC reflect the change of electric field to the image is analyzed. When the holding time of PDLC is short, better contrast of electric field image can be obtained by changing the instance of applying the driving voltage to the PDLC.
