  • This experiment was conducted to characterize the vertical transport trend of dissolved elements through throughfall, stemflow, effluent from Ao layer, and leachate out of soil profile on Pinus koraiensis stand in Experimental Forest of Kyunghee University, located in Kwangju, Kyunggi province for 12 months from July, 1998 to Jun, 1999. In addition, we investigated the content of dissolved elements and the factors influencing the water chemistry concentrations separately collected from the field. Water movement in the process of throughfall and stemflow from precipitation, and rainfall leached from Ao layer into soil water was governed by concentration of through fall, precipitation, rainfall intensity, seasonal variation, and other factors. Also, smaller changes of pH in soil water than that of dissolved elements in soil water could contribute buffer capacity, as well as balancing the concentration between cations and anions.

  • Wood cell-wall modification with acetic anhydride, lumen filled with styren monomer and methyl methacrylate, and a combination of these two treatments were studied for their effectiveness for dimensional stability. Compared to those of untreated Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc and sole acetylated red pine, The combination of acetylation and impregnation with methy methacrylate greatly reduced water absorption, increased ASE to the best and gave better bending strength and compression strength.

  • We investigated the biodiversity of endophytic fungi isolated from leaves of three coniferous species (Pinus densiflora, P. koraiensis, Larix kaempferi) on Mt. Minjuji, Korea. A total of 39 isolates were discovered from 17 host plants and their homology with the ITS region was searched. They were then identified as 22 taxa; 64% of fungal isolates belong to Sordariomyetes, 33% of isolates to Leotiomycetes, and 3% isolates to Agaricomycetes.

  • The genets of Suillus granulatus in a Pinus strobus stand ($13m{\times}60m$) were identified using random amplified polymorphic DNA molecular markers and the DNA of mushrooms that fruited for two years, and variations in genet size and distribution were analyzed. From a total of 116 mushrooms, 73 genets were identified and were grouped into three locations. The genets of mushrooms in close proximity differed from each other. The genet sizes varied at any of the three locations. The lengths of the identified genets in the pine stand ranged from 0.09 to 2.90 m. The average number of mushrooms per genet was 1.2 to 2.3, and the percentage of genets that were represented by a single mushroom was 44% to 94%. This variation in the genets of mushrooms in close proximity suggests that the ectomycorrhizal mycelial bodies of S. granulatus propagated sexually by fusing haploid spores derived from the mushrooms gills with below-ground mycelia. Therefore, it is necessary further to investigate the formation of new genets through spores in ectomycorrhizal fungal colonies.

  • EtOAc extract from the bark of Pinus koraiensis Sieb. et Zucc was isolated by column chromatography which was packed with Sephadex LH-20 or TSK-gel HW-40F. Several stilbene glycosides were identified by $^1H{\cdot}^{13}C$-NMR, HMQC, HMBC and $FAB^+$ MS. Three stilbene glycosides, Z-pinostilbenoside, E-desoxyrhaponticin, and E-resveratroloside, were identified.

  • Extracts from sawdust of Pinus densiflora were showed antifungal activity against Lentinula edodes. It was extracted by hot water and then successively extracted by n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol. The yields of the n-hexane-soluble, ethyl acetatesoluble, methanol-soluble and methanol-insoluble fractions of water extracts were 8.2%, 10.6%, 32.0%, and 49.2%, respectively. The ethyl acetate-soluble fraction showed the greatest antifungal activity against L. edodes: 41.5% inhibition at 1,000 ppm. However, there were not significant differences of antifungal activities between n-hexane-soluble fraction and methanol-soluble fraction at a concentration of 1,000 ppm. The hot water extracts showed 23.5% of antifungal activity against L. edodes at a concentration of 1000 ppm. The four antifungal compounds were separated from ethyl acetate fraction by thin layer chromatography.

  • The standing crop and net production were estimated in Moojaechi on Mt. Jungjok. By using the decay model of organic carbon, absolute year of bog peat was calculated. Pollen analysis to bog peat revealed vegetational history and climate change around Moojaechi. The time required for amount of the accumulated peat in the bog was estimated in terms of the balance of the accumulation and decay of organic carbon of the deposit peat. Absolute year of the peat surveyed in this study was about 314 years. Pollen of Pinus was predominant in all the pollen zone, Geamineae and Cyperaceae increased in lower pollen zone while Pinus in upper pollen zone. This showes that climate of the past was probably more humid than that of present. In addition, middle pollen zone showed warming trend which is suggested by high pollen concentration of Quercus, Juglans, Carpinus and Corylus. It suggests that overall environment and vegetation were changed from warmer and more humid to dry condition in Moojaechi and it is considered as the course of boggy ground formation by retrogressive successions.

  • The forest vegetation of Jongyeoul hill, Seoul, was classified into six secondary forests and two plantations by ZM method; Pinus densiflora, Quercus acutissima, Pinus rigida, Robinia pseudoacacia and Alnus hirsuta-Quercus mongolica community, and Castanea crenata and Pinus koraiensis plantation. In the herb layer the species richness and total coverage of deciduous broad leaf forests showed higher values than those of evergreen needle leaf forests. The peak in July at Q. acutissima forest and in the middle of June at R. pseudoacacia forest. Simpson's diversity index(Ds) in different stands are as follows: Ds>0.6 in R. pseudoacacia forest, Ds=0.3~0.6 in Q. acutissima forest and Ds<0.3 in P. densiflora and P. rigida forest. It is found that, although dominance rank and importance value were originated from different school each other, two measures can be used exchangablym showing almost linear positive correlation between them in this study.

  • The montane forests of Ulreung Island, Korea, were investigated by the ZM school method. By comparing the montane forests of this island with those of Korean Peninsula and of Japan, a new order, F a g e t a l i a m u l t i n e r v i s, a new alliance, F a l g i o n m u l t i n e r v i s, a new association, H e p a t i c o-F a g e t u m m u l t i n e r v i s and Rhododendron brachycarpum-Pinus parviflora community were recognized. The H e p a t i c o - F a g e t u m m u l t i n e r v i s was further subdivided into four subassociations; Subass. of Sasa kurilensis, Subass. of Rumohra standishii, Subass. of Rhododendron brachycarpum and Subass. of typicum. Each community was described in terms of floristic, structural and environmental features.

  • In the present experiment as a basic study for establishing a hybrid seed orchard, an observation was made on the survivability of grafts using Pinus rigida as the stock and its hybrids as the sciion, and on the shape and germination of pollen collected from grafted plants. The results are summarized as follows: 1. The hybrid scion of P. rigida.taeda or $P. rigida{\times}(P. rigida.taeda)$ grafted into P. rigida stock showed lower survivability than the homoplastic graftings of P. rigida. 2. Five among the eight eleven-year old scions homoplastically grafted into two-year old stock for the staminate strobile one year after their grafting. 3. There was no difference in the size and germination ability between the pollen collected from homoplastically grafted plant and from the normal one. 4. The pollen collected from the grafted plant is thought to be usable for the control pollination as the germination of such pollen was considerably good.
