Effects of Dietary Supplementation of Microbial Complex on Improvement of Environment in Finishing Pig Building (복합미생물제제 급여가 비육돈사의 환경개선에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of microbial complex diets on improvement of air quality in finishing pig building. Ammonia and hydrogen sulfide concentrations were significantly(p<0.05) decreased by dietary supplementation of 0.1% level of microbial complex compared with those of control according to the time in the finishing pig building. Characteristics of piggery liquid slurry that total nitrogen and $NH_3-N$ of treatment were reduced relatively compared with those of control, and were decreased depending on the time. In conclusion, the result obtained from this study suggest that the dietary supplementation of microbial complex for finishing pigs may improve environment in the finishing pig building.

  • Pig production is one of the viable enterprises of the livestock sub-sector of agriculture. It contributes significantly to the economy and animal protein supply to enhance food security in Africa and globally. This article explored the present status of pig production in Africa, the challenges, prospects and potentials. The pig population of Africa represents 4.6% of the global pig population. They are widely distributed across Africa except in Northern Africa where pig production is not popular due to religio-cultural reasons. They are mostly reared in rural parts of Africa by smallholder farmers, informing why majority of the pig population in most parts of Africa are indigenous breeds and their crosses. Pig plays important roles in the sustenance of livelihood in the rural communities and have cultural and social significance. The pig production system in Africa is predominantly traditional, but rapidly growing and transforming into the modern system. The annual pork production in Africa has grown from less than a million tonnes in year 2000 to over 2 million tonnes in 2021. Incidence of disease outbreak, especially African swine fever is one of the main constraints affecting pig production in Africa. Others are lack of skills and technical know-how, high ambient temperature, limited access to high-quality breeds, high cost of feed ingredients and veterinary inputs, unfriendly government policies, religious and cultural bias, inadequate processing facilities as well as under-developed value-chain. The projected human population of 2.5 billion in Africa by 2050, increasing urbanization and decreasing farming population are pointers to the need for increased food production. The production systems of pigs in Africa requires developmental research, improvements in housing, feed production and manufacturing, animal health, processing, capacity building and pig friendly policies for improved productivity and facilitation of export.

Estimation of Adequate Capacity of Ground Source Heat Pump in Energy-saving Pig Farms Using Building Energy Simulation (BES를 사용한 에너지 절감형 양돈장의 지열히트펌프 적정 용량 산정)

  • In Korea, attention is being paid to the use of renewable energy in the livestock industry, and Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP), which is advantageous for temperature control, is considered as one of the ways to reduce the use of fossil fuels. But GSHP is expensive to install, which proper capacity calculation is required. GSHP capacity is related to its maximum energy load. Energy loads are affected by climate characteristics and time, so dynamic analysis is required. In this study, the optimal capacity of GSHP was calculated by calculating the heating and cooling load of pig farms using BES (Building Energy Simulation) and economic analysis was performed. After designing the inside of the pig house using TRNSYS, one of the commercial programs of the BES technique, the energy load was calculated based on meteorological data. Through the calculated energy load, three heating devices and GSHP used in pig farms were analyzed for economic feasibility. As a result, GSHP's total cost of ownership was the cheapest, but the installation cost was the highest. In order to reduce the initial cost of GSHP, the capacity of GSHP was divided, and a scenario was created in which some of it was used as an auxiliary heating device, and economic analysis was conducted. In this study, a method to calculate the proper capacity of GSHP through dynamic energy analysis was proposed, and it can be used as data necessary to expand the spread of GSHP.

A Study on the Relationship among Exhibition Selection Factor, Performance, Satisfaction and Intention to Revisit of Participants in International Exhibition (국제전시회 참가기업의 전시회 선택속성과 참가성과, 만족 및 재참가의도 간의 관계 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine relationships among exhibition selection factor, performance, satisfaction and intention to revisit of participants in international exhibition. For this purpose, we set hypotheses relationship among external selection factor of exhibition (ESFE), internal selection factor of exhibition (ISFE), performance of sales (PS), performance of information gathering (PIG), performance of relationship building (PRB), performance of image building (PIB), satisfaction (SAT) and intention to revisit (IR). To verify theses hypotheses, we conducted path analysis on the data from 100 participants of 2019 Korea International Boat Show. The result of this study is as follows: Frist, ESFE positively impacts on PS, PIG, PRB, PIB. Second, ISFE positively impacts on PIG, PRB. Third, PS and PIB positively impacts on SAT. Fourth, SAT positively impacts on IR. The implication of this study is two fold. This study expands research area of international exhibition to a new industry such as marine leisure sports industry and provides useful information to firms that plan to participate in the international exhibition and to those who organize the international exhibitions.

FIELD TEST INSTALLATIONS USING N$H_3$SENSOR AND VENTILATION RATE SENSOR FOR CONTINUOUS MEASUREMENT OF TOTAL AMMONIA EMISSION FROM ANIMAL HOUSES

  • Two field test installations are discussed. In the first one a new ammonia sensor and an accurate ventilation rate sensor are combined. They are installed in the exhaust chimney in a ventilated pig house. The relative humidity and the room temperature are measured as well. In the second one, an in situ NH$_3$longrightarrowNO converter with subsequent NOx analyser is also being added for accurate ammonia measurement . In this way , the continuous measurement of the total NH$_3$emission can be obtained , the performance of the NH$_3$ sensor can be evaluated, and the ammonia reduction techniques can be tested. The outputs of measurement are fed into a data acquisition system then to a PC in the laboratory. There has been realised the first test installation with which research on the new ammonia sensor is carried out. The primary research results are presented.

Comparison of Dust Exposure Levels among Farmers with and without Feeding (사료 급이 유무에 따른 돈사 작업자의 분진 노출량 비교)

  • Objectives: The principal purpose of this study is to statistically compare dust levels among farmers with and without feeding in a nursery pig building. Methods: Total dust and respirable dust were measured by personal sampling method, and TSP and PM10 were monitored by the direct recording method in the pig building. Results: IIn the personal samples, mean exposure levels of total and respirable dust were higher among the farmers who conducted feeding compared to farmers who did not. A significant difference between farmers with feeding and farmers without feeding was found in total dust concentration(p<0.05), whereas there was no significant difference in respirable dust concentrations. In real-time monitoring of dust based on area sampling, the highest levels of total and respirable dust were detected in the feeding time periods; $4.33{\pm}2.57mg/m^3$ for TSP and $2.53{\pm}1.02mg/m^3$ for PM10, respectively. During time periods without feeding, the levels of total and respirable dust ranged from 1 to $2mg/m^3$ and from 0.5 to $1.5mg/m^3$, respectively. Conclusions: In terms of association of feeding work and air sampling location, the mean concentrations of total and respirable dust were highest in area sampling with feeding and lowest in personal sampling without feeding. However, a significant difference among groups investigated according to air sampling condition was found in total dust.

Effects of Dietary Supplementation of Complex Probiotics and Enzyme on Improvement of Farm Environment and Performance of Finishing Pigs (복합생균효소제 급여가 돈사 환경개선과 비육돈 생산성에 미치는 영향)

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of dietary supplementation of complex probiotics and enzyme on air quality in finishing pig building and the performance of finishing pigs. A total 117 crossbred $[(Landrace{\times}Yorkshire){\times}Duroc]$ pigs were randomly arranged into nine groups and assigned to three treatments. Pigs were fed a basal diet supplemented with 0, 0.1% level of probiotics and 0.1% level of complex probiotics and enzyme until the market weight for 42 days of the experimental period. Ammonia and hydrogen sulfide concentrations in the finishing pig building were significantly (p<0.05) decreased by dietary supplementation of complex probiotics and enzyme compared with those of control, however, indoor carbon dioxide concentration was not affected by dietary supplementation of probiotics or complex probiotics and enzyme. Average daily feed intake and feed conversion ratio were significantly improved (p<0.05) with dietary supplementation of 0.1% complex probiotics and enzyme; however, average daily gain was not affected by dietary supplementation of probiotics or complex probiotics and enzyme. In conclusion, the results obtained from this experiment suggest that the dietary supplementation of complex probiotics and enzyme for finishing pigs may improve air quality in the finishing pig building and the performance.

Evaluation of Odor Reduction in the Enclosed Pig Building Through Spraying Biological Additives (생물학적 첨가제 살포에 의한 밀폐형 돈사에서의 악취 저감 평가)

  • Maintenance of an optimal air quality in the enclosed pig building is potentially important in terms of pig performance and farmer health. The objective of this on-site experiment is to evaluate and compare efficiencies of currently utilized biological additives to reduce odor emissions from the enclosed pig building. As a result, generally all the additives except for salt water, artificial spice and essential oil were proved ineffective in reducing odor generation. The beneficial effects of salt water, artificial spice and essential oil on odor reduction were highlighted on ammonia, odor intensity and offensiveness, and sulfuric odorous compounds, respectively. To efficiently utilize odor masking agent such as the artificial spice, ventilation rate should keep slightly lower than the optimal level. Essential oil functioned well as not only masking agent but also antimicrobial agent for reducing odor. To precisely quantify odor concentration, it should be measured by not the odor sensor but the olfactometry technique.

Ammonia Emission Characteristics of the Naturally Ventilated Growing-finishing Pig Building in Winter (자연환기식 육성${\cdot}$비육돈사와 동절기 암모니아 발생특성)

  • The study was carried out to develop the real time measuring technique of ammonia and carbon dioxide concentration emitted from growing-finishing pig house in winter and estimate ammonia emission rate emitted from the pig house. As the study was carried out, environmental management technique for the pig house and odor abatement skill could be properly developed to reduce the residence's annoyance. The room temperature of the growing-finishing pig house was $10^{\circ}C$ higher than outdoor air temperature in spite of additional heating, because of heat emitted from body temperature of the pigs. The daily variation pattern of room temperature in the pig house shows the similar tendency with outdoor air temperature. The daily mean ventilation rate per head was $16\;m^3/h$ and ranged from $12\;m^3/h$ to $22.4\;m^3/h$. The difference of day and night for ventilation rate was about 2 times. The ammonia emission rate was $208{\pm}28\;mg/h{\cdot}pig$ per daily basics calculated with ventilation rate and ammonia concentration.
