  • The temperature dependence of piezoelectric strain constant and the electric field induced strain are investigated as a function of PT in 0.5[xPT-(1-x)PZ]-0.5PNN ceramics. The piezoelectric strain constant d31 has the highest value(360$\times$10-12m/V) at PT=0.68. The temperature dependence of d31 is improved as Curie temperature of sample is increased, and the electric field dependence of induced strain is decreased with the coercive field increased. This ceramic system shows both piezoelectric effect and electrostrictive effect under the applied electric field. The piezoelectric of tetragonal phase is higher than that of rhombohedral phase, and the magnitude of electrostrictive constant is appeared in the order of morphotropic, rhombohedral and tetragonal phase. The piezoelectric strain constant with applied field must be considered theelectrostrictive effect due to 90$^{\circ}$domain wall displacements, and the displacement of bimorph type actuator agrees with the calulated value well.

  • In this study, piezoelectric actuator samples were fabricated using 0.375PMN-0.37OPT-0.255PZ system ceramics with Barium substitution and the strain properties of them were investigated. Dielectric constant of the specimens increased with the increase of Ba content up to 5mol% and decreased with futher addition of Ba. The largest piezoelectric coefficient and electromechanical coupling coefficient were observed at the sintering temperature of 1250'C and Barium content of 5mol%. The characteristics of strain hysteresis was found largely with varing the sintering temperature on the single round type, and the strain is proportional to piezoelectric coefficient.

  • In order to reduce the piezoelectric field originated from the well layer which resides in InGaN/GaN light emitting diode, InGaN/GaN superlattice buffer layers were grown at the bottom and the top of the active layer. Measuring the photoluminescence spectra with different reverse bias voltages clearly revealed the condition of the flat band under which the transition energy is maximized and the linewidth is minimized. Accordingly, the piezoelectric field of $In_{0.15}Ga_{0.85}N$ in our sample was estimated as -1.08 MV/cm. It is less than half the value reported in the previous studies, and it is evidenced that the strain has reduced due to the superlattice buffer layers.

  • This paper deals with the analytical modeling, and the experimental verification of the strain rate self-sensing method using a hybrid adaptive filter for a cantilevered piezoelectric beam. The piezoelectric beam consists of two laminated lead zirconium titanates (PZT) on a metal shim. A mathematical model of the beam dynamics is derived by Hamilton's principle and the accuracy of the modeling is verified through the comparison with experimental results. For the strain rate estimation of the cantilevered piezoelectric beam, a self-sensing mechanism using a hybrid adaptive filter is considered. The discrete parts of this mechanism are realized by the DS1103 DSP board manufactured by dSPACE$\^$TM/. The efficacy of this method is investigated through the comparison of experimental results with the predictions from the derived analytical model.

  • This study presents a method to monitor cable force of a long-span cable-stayed bridge using a smart piezoelectric sensor system. The following approaches are implemented in order to achieve the objective. Firstly, the method to utilize piezoelectric materials for the health monitoring of stay cables is presented. For strain measurement of a stay cable, a PZT-embedded smart skin is designed to overcome the difficulties of bonding PZT sensors directly on stay cables. Secondly, a piezoelectric strain monitoring system for stay cables is designed. For the operation of the sensor board, the Imote2 sensor platform is used to provide the computation, wireless communication and power supply units. The feasibility of the proposed monitoring system is then evaluated on a full-scale cable of a cable-stayed bridge.

  • In this paper, wireless health monitoring of stay cables using piezoelectric strain sensors and a smart skin technique is presented. For the cables, tension forces are estimated to examine their health status from vibration features with consideration of temperature effects. The following approaches are implemented to achieve the objective. Firstly, the tension force estimation utilizing the piezoelectric sensor-embedded smart skin is presented. A temperature correlation model to recalculate the tension force at a temperature of interest is designed by correlating the change in cable's dynamic features and temperature variation. Secondly, the wireless health monitoring system for stay cables is described. A piezoelectric strain sensor node and a tension force monitoring software which is embedded in the sensor are designed. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed monitoring technique is evaluated on stay cables of the Hwamyung Grand Bridge in Busan, Korea.

  • To develop the piezoelectric actuator, the structural, dielectric and piezoelectric properties and electric fieldinduced strain of the ceramics(Pb$\_$1-2/Ba$\_$x/)[Mg$\_$1/2/W$\_$1/2/)$\_$0.03/-Ni$\_$1/3/Nb$\_$2/3/)$\_$0.12/-(Zr$\_$0.5/Ti$\_$0.5/)$\_$0.85/]O$_3$(x=0, 0.01, 0.03, 0.05, 0.07, 0.1) were investigated with the substitution of Ba. The tetragonality of crystal structure and grain size decreased by the substitution of Ba. Curie temperature decreased due to the decrease of the tetragonality, and dielectric constants increased with the substitution of Ba. The coercive field, remnant polarization and electromechanical coupling factor also decreased, whereas the piezoelectric constatns d$\_$33/ and d$\_$31/ were showed the highest value of 430 and 209(x10$\^$-12/C/N), respectively, because of the increase of dielectric constant. The strain induced by 60Hz AC electric field had the maximum value of 204x10$\^$-6/Δℓ/ℓ at the substitution of Ba 3mol%. As the applied electric field approaches to the coercive field, the piezoelectric element is depolarized and the electric field induced strain revealed non-linearity.

  • Finite element analyses are carried out to understand the piezoelectric behaviors of ZnO nanowires. Three different types of ZnO nanowires, with aspect ratios of 1:2. 1:31, and 1:57, are analyzed for uniaxial compression, pure bending, and buckling. Under the uniaxial compression with a strain of $1.0{\times}10^{-4}$ as the reference state, it is predicted that all three types of nanowires develop the same magnitude of the piezoelectric fields, which suggests that longer nanowires exhibit higher piezoelectric potential. However, this prediction is not in agreement with the experimental results previously reported in the literature. Such discrepancy is understood when the piezoelectric behaviors under bending and buckling are considered. When only the strain field due to bending is present in bending or buckling, the antisymmetric nature of the through-thickness stain distribution indicates that two piezoelectric fields, the same in magnitude and opposite in sign, develop along the thickness direction, which cancels each other out, resulting in a zero net piezoelectric field. Once additional strain contribution due to axial deformation is superposed on the bending, such field cancelling is compensated for due to the axial component of the piezoelectric field. Such numerical predictions seem to explain the reported experimental results while providing a guideline for the design of nanowire-based piezoelectric devices.

  • In-plane piezoelectric charge constant of Electro-Active paper (EAPap) was investigated based on direct and converse piezoelectric effects. EAPap samples were made with cellulose film with very thin gold electrode coated on both sides of the film. To characterize direct piezoelectricity of EAPap, induced charge was measured when mechanical stress was applied to EAPap. In-plane piezoelectric charge constant was extracted from the relation between induced charge and applied in-plane normal stress. To investigate converse piezoelectricity, induced in-plane strain was measured when electric field was applied to EAPap. Piezoelectric charge constant was also extracted from the relation of induced in-plane strain and applied electric field. Piezoelectric charge constants obtained from direct and converse piezoelectricity are 31 pC/N and 178 x 10-12m/V for 45 degree sample, respectively. Measured piezoelectric charge constants of EAPap provide promising potential as a piezoelectric material.
