Physiochemical Properties of Fernbraken Jangachi during Korean Traditional Pickling Process (숙성 기간 및 절임원에 따른 고사리장아찌의 이화학적 특성 변화)

  • Fernbraken is a popular and well-known wild grass, but the physiochemical properties of Korean Traditional pickling (Jangachi) during aging have been little reported. Therefore, this study was carried out to investigate the physiochemical properties of Fernbraken Jangachi treated with a soybean sauce mixture for 6 weeks (1st pretreatment) as well as fermented with soybean paste, red hot pepper paste and soybean sauce for 7 weeks. Total polyphenol contents, acidity, salinity, sweetness (Brix), and ${\alpha}$-tocopherol of Fernbraken Jangachi all increased with aging period. On the other hand, pH and total acidity of Fernbraken Jangachi did not change much. Among the three kinds of Jangachies, Jangachi fermented with soybean sauce showed 2 fold higher salinity and total acidity levels compared to the others. Therefore, the physiochemical properties of Fernbraken Jangachi were dependent on the pickling properties, such as soybean paste, hot pepper paste or soybean sauce, and these properties maintained a certain level after 5~6 weeks of aging. Further, proper aging period for Fernbraken Jangachi was suggested as 10 weeks.

  • No.2 PCM (Pickling and tandem cold rolling mill) at Pohang works was revamped in 2003. The purpose of this project is to produce carbon and stainless steel using conventional carbon production process, rolling and annealing. This paper introduces the applied facilities and technologies of PCM which are used in production of carbon and stainless steel. To realize the main purpose of this project, POSCO have developed laser weld technology in normal carbon and special steel (stainless, high carbon and high silicon). And this report describes the method which is developed to get down the surface defect of stainless 400 series. After revamping, No.2 PCM can have competitive power in this field and can supply the special steel using carbon rolling process.

Characteristics Evaluation of Conversion Coating of Acid Pickling AZ31 Magnesium Alloy by a Chromium-Free Phosphate-Permanganate Solution (비크롬계 인산-과망간산 용액을 이용한 AZ31 마그네슘 합금의 산처리에 따른 화성 피막의 특성 평가)

  • A chromium-free conversion coating for AZ31 magnesium alloy has been obtained by using a permanganatephosphate solution, which has been developed with acid pickling. Examination have been carried out on the conversion coatings for morphology, composition and corrosion resistance. The morphology of the conversion-coated layer was observed using optical microscope and SEM. It was shown that the conversion coatings are relatively uniform and continuous, with thickness 1.8 to 2.7 ${\mu}m$. The chemical composition of conversion coating was mainly consisted of Mg, O, P, K, Al and Mn by EDS analysis. It was found that the corrosion resistance of the AZ31 magnesium alloy has been improved by the permanganate-phosphate conversion treatment from electrochemical polarization.

Removal of Nitrate-Nitrogen in Pickling Acid Wastewater from Stainless Steel Industry Using Electrodialysis and Ion Exchange Resin (전기투석과 이온교환수지를 이용한 스테인레스 산업의 산세폐수 내 질산성 질소의 제거)

  • Lab-scale Electrodialysis(ED) system with different membranes combined with before or after pyroma process were carried out to remove nitrate from two pickling acid wastewater containing high concentrations of $NO_3\;^-$(${\approx}$150,000 mg/L) and F($({\approx}$ 160,000 mg/L) and some heavy metals(Fe, Ti, and Cr). The ED system before Pyroma process(Sample A) was not successful in $NO_3\;^-$ removal due to cation membrane fouling by the heavy metals, whereas, in the ED system after Pyroma process(Sample B), about 98% of nitrate was removed because of relatively low $NO_3\;^-$ concentration (about 30,000 mg/L) and no heavy metals. Mono-selective membranes(CIMS/ACS) in ED system have no selectivity for nitrate compared to divalent-selective membranes(CMX/AMX). The operation time for nitrate removal time decreased with increasing the applied voltage from 10V to 15V with no difference in the nitrate removal rate between both voltages. Nitrate adsorption of a strong-base anion exchange resin of $Cl\;^-$ type was also conducted. The Freundlich model($R^2$ > 0.996) was fitted better than Langmuir mode($R^2$ > 0.984) to the adsorption data. The maximum adsorption capacity ($Q^0$) was 492 mg/g for Sample A and 111 mg/g for Sample B due to the difference in initial nitrate concentrations between the two wastewater samples. In the regeneration of ion exchange resins, the nitrate removal rate in the pickling acid wastewater decreased as the adsorption step was repeated because certain amount of adsorbed $NO_3\;^-$ remained in the resins in spite of several desorption steps for regeneration. In conclusion, the optimum system configuration to treat pickling acid wastewater from stainless-steel industry is the multi-processes of the Pyroma-Electrodialysis-Ion exchange.

  • Pickling of oxidized 304 stainless steel has been investigated using rotating disk electrode in waste acid solutions generated from the etching process of silicon wafer in order to recycle them. The waste acid solution contained acetic, nitric, hydrofluoric acids, and silicon of $19.6g/L^{-1}$. Electrochemical behavior during the pickling was distinctively different between the original and silicon-removed acid solutions. Open circuit potential was continuously changed in the original solution, while it was discontinuously changed and fluctuated in the silicon-removed solution. Fast and abrupt removal of surface oxide layer with severe pitting was observed in the silicon-removed solution. It was found that solution temperature had the most influential effect on glossiness. Surface glossiness after pickling was decreased with solution temperature. At the same condition, the glossiness was higher in the original solution than in the silicon-removed solution.

Improvement of Color for Iron Oxide from Waste Pickling Acid (산화철 안료의 색상개선 연구)

  • In this study, to improve the color of iron oxide from waste pickling acid at the cold rolling mill, the quality control technologies especially about color were investigated on the spray roaster and iron oxide powder. At the operation condition of the spray roaster, the charge amount of waste acid per hour, temperature, numbers of spray nozzle were investigated. At admixing process, titanium oxide, silica, goethite were tested. Color character of iron oxide can be improved by process control at spray roaster and by admixing process at a pigment factory Iron oxide from results of this study is enough to use as the colorant of concrete product.

  • Kimchi is an important traditional fermented food a korean eating habbit. It is an outstanding food to supply its taste, dietary fiber, vitamins and inorganic substances by microorganism. And recently Kimchi has spotlighted as an international food. To make study of contents concerned Kimchi, analyzed the girl’s high school economics textbook, made questionnaires about necessity of Kimchi education, practiced process of Kimchi to present how to pickle vegetables into Kimchi. The results were: 1. The most of the respondents wanted for Kimchi making and answered that they prepare Kimchi at home by themselves. 2. The most suitable pickling time was about 4 hours and salting conditions by dry and wet styles were 20% for good taste and nutrition of Kimchi. 3. Teaching-learning program by cooperative learning model developed.

  • No. 1 PL(Pickling Line) and No. 1 TCM(Tandem Cold Rolling Mill) at Pohang works started up in 1977 and have been operating successfully keeping high productivity for productivity thin gauge sheat such as BP, CR and silicon steel. On the other hand, customer's requirements of quality level are rasing higher continuously, so that Pohang works has combined and revamped No. 1 PL and No. 1 TCM in order to improve labor productivity, thickness accuracy and shape control capability, and so on in the period of 1977∼1999. This paper introduce the applied facilities, technologies and recent operations after revamping.
