As a raw material for pulp and paper industry, Moso bamboo, Timber bamboo and Henon bamboo pulps were prepared by soda or soda-anthraquinone(Soda-AQ) pulping process. Soda-AQ pulp yields was higher in Henon bamboo (43.2%) than in Moso bamboo or Timber bamboo (32.7-39.2%), but quite lower than hardwood species. In Kappa number comparison, Henon bamboo pulp showed lower (16.6) with 50 min cooking to $170^{\circ}C$ than that of Moso bamboo (22.8) and Timber bamboo (18.9) with 90 min cooking to $170^{\circ}C$. Fiber length of Timber bamboo soda pulp had higher (1.46 mm) than that of Moso bamboo or Henon bamboo (1.18-1.36 mm). All three bamboo pulps showed longer average fiber length than commercial hardwood pulp. With higher pulp yield and lower Kappa number, Henon bamboo is better raw material for pulp than Moso bamboo and Timber bamboo.

Objectives : Phyllostachys Folium is leaves of Phyllostachys nigra var. henesis $S_{TAPF}$. In the East Asian traditional medicine, the herb has been used to treat nasal bleeding, dysuria, epilepsy and etc. The present study was conducted to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effects of the Phyllostachys Folium water extracts (PFE) in vitro and in vivo model. Methods : Cell viability was measured by MTT assay after the treatment of PFE and NO production was monitored by measuring the nitrite content in culture medium. iNOS, COX-2, $I{\kappa}B$, $p-I{\kappa}B{\alpha}$ amd $NF{\kappa}B$ were detected by immunoblot analysis, and levels of cytokine were analyzed by sandwich ELISA kit. Anti-edema effect of PFE was determined in the carrageenan-induced paw edema model in rats. Results : LPS increased NO and cytokines levels compared with control, these increases were attenuated by PFE. In addition, LPS-induced pro-inflammatory proteins such as iNOS, COX-2 were down regulated by PFE. These anti-inflammatory effect of PFE results from inhibition of phosphorylation of $I{\kappa}B$ and translocation of $NF-{\kappa}B$. Conclusion : These results show that PFE has some anti-inflammatory effects which might play a role in gram-negative bacterial infection inflammation and $NF{\kappa}B$ activated diseases.
The purposes of this study were to investigate the physicochemical properties and component values of bamboo oil from Phyllostachys nigra var. henonis obtained by refining process. The tar concentration in the refined bamboo oil (RBO) was decreased to about 78% compared to crude Bamboo oil (CBO). The chromaticities of light, red, and yellow in RBO were 92.4 and 3.0, respectively. This result indicates that the chromaticity of light was increased with the decrease in the tar concentration in the Bamboo oil. The total concentrations of organic acid and phenolics compound in RBO were decreased to about 63% and 80%, respectively. The total concentration of free sugars was decreased to about 78% in RBO and the concentration of free sugar was in the order of lactose, fructose, and glucose. The palmitoleic acid and stearic acid concentrations were higher than that of other fatty acids. The concentration of total organic acid was decreased to about 88% through RBO. Among the various organic acids, the formic acid concentration was highest in the RBO. The minerals concentrations in the CBO were in the order of Ca, K, Na, and Fe. On the other hand, in the case of RBO, it was in the order of Ca, Fe, K, and Na.

The objective of this study was to investigate the antioxidative components and anti-oralmicrobial effect of bamboo (Phyllostachys nigra var. henonis Stapf) leaves. The moisture, crude protein, crude fat, crude ash, and carbohydrate contents were 6.30%, 5.10%, 1.73%, 10.61%, and 76.26%, respectively. Vitamin C content was higher than Vitamin A and E contents. Among organic acids, citric acid content was the most abundant organic acid, followed by succinic acid, acetic acid, malic acid, and formic acid. Total polyphenol and flavonoid contents were 21.66 mg/g and 42.78 mg/g, respectively. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of extracts of bamboo leaves for Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus were determined to be 0.04% and 0.16%, respectively. MICs of extracts of bamboo leaves for Porphyromonas gingivalis and Prevotella intermedia were determined to be 0.02%. Extract of bamboo leaves had strong antimicrobial activity against S. mutans, S. sobrinus, P. gingivalis, and P. intermedia at a concentration of 0.32%. At this concentration, extract of bamboo leaves inhibited growth of these pathogenic bacteria up to 60 h. The results of the present study demonstrate the antimicrobial effects of bamboo leaves ethanol extract against oral pathogenic bacteria, suggesting that bamboo leaves could be an effective natural agent for oral hygiene.
Three Phyllostachys stands of P. pubescens, P. bambusoides and P. nigra var, henonis in Sunchon were studied to investigate biomass, net production and nutrient distribution. Five $10m{\times}10m$ quadrats were set up and 20 sample culms of 2 years and over were harvested for dimension analysis in each stand. One year old culms and subterranean parts were estimated by the harvested quadrat method. The largest mean DBH, height and basal area were shown in P. pubescens stand, and followed by P. nigra var. henonis stand and P. bambusoides stand. There was little difference in accuracy among three allometric biomass regression models of logWt=A+B1ogD, $logWt=A+BlogD^2H$ and logWt=A+BlogD+ClogH, where Wt, D and H were dry weight, DBH and height, respectively. Analysis of covariance showed that there were significant differences in intercept among the linear allometric biomass regressons of three Phyllostachys species. Biomass included subterranean parts was the largest in P. pubescens stand(103.621t/ha), and followed by P. nigra var. henonis stand(86.447t/ha) and P. bambusoides stand(36.767t/ha). Leaf biomass was 6.3% to 7.8% of total biomass in each stands. The ratio of aboveground biomass and subterranean biomass in each stand was 1.87 to 2.26. Net production included subterranean parts was the greatest in P. pubescens stand(6.115t/ha/yr), and followed by P. nigra var. henonis stand(5.609t/ha/yr) and P, bambusoides stand(3.252t/ha/yr). The highest net assimilation ratio was estimated in P. pubescens stand(2.979), and followed by P. nigra var. henonis stand(2.752) and P. bambusoides stand(2.187). Biomass accumulation ratio of each stand was 2.679 to 5.358. Concentrations of N, P and Mg were the highest in leaves, and followed by subterranean parts, and culms+branches in all three species. Concentration of Ca was the highest in leaves, and followed by culms+branches, and subterranean parts in all three species. The difference in biomass among three species stands was caused by their culm size, leaf biomass, net assimilation ratio, and efficiency of leaves to produce culms.
For distinguish between Lophatherum gracile and Phyllostachys nigra var. henonis based on natural shape and external-internal morphology of medicinal shape, general contents of oriental medicine were rearranged through bibliography. As a result, two medicinal stuffs indicated the difference in shape and structure(external-internal and powder)of origin plant bibiliographically. After this, this contents were utilized to give proof of many effective difference between two medicinal stuff.
Lophatheri Herba is the aerial part of Lophatherum gracile Bronghiart(淡竹葉, Gramineae). 25~75 cm in length. Stem: cylindrical with nodes, empty inside, externally pale yellowish green. Leaf: dehiscent of lanceolate lamina, shrunken and rolled, 5~20 cm long, 10~35 mm wide; surface: pale green ~ yellowish green, parallel-formed with veins of square reticulate, more distinct of appearance on the lower surface. Banbusae Caulis In Taeniam is the stringy strip derived from the stem with the peeled-off epidermis of Phllostachys nigra Munro var. henosis Stapf, and Phllostachys bambusoides Siebold et Zuccarini(竹葉, Gramineae). Irregular in size and shape, thin plane ~ strip-shaped, sometimes powdery, sometimes 1~3 mm thick. Outer surface: pale green ~ yellowish green, sometimes grayish white L. gracile and P. nigra have different origins although they show similar morphologic features. We were able to distinguish between L. gracile and P. nigra which are almost indistinguishable through this study. AFLP(Amplifide Fragment Length Polymorphism) was more suitable for identifying differences between L. gracile and P. nigra in comparison with other genetic analysis using chemical analysis. Therefore. molecular biological methods are believed to be useful for discovering origins of herbal medicines.

Natural plant extract has been the subject of intense research aiming in elucidating the underlying mechanisms of their chemopreventive effects upon various forms of human cancers. The objective of our study was to evaluate the natural antioxidants and anticancer agent potential of Phyllostachys. The chemical composition of steam extract from Phyllostachys was carried out using GC-MS. The steam extract of Phyllostachys was dominated by monoterpenes (62.96% - 71.36%) and sesquiterpenes (23.58% - 33.13%) as the main compounds. The antioxidant activities of the steam extract was determined using a DPPH scavenging and hydrogen peroxide scavenging activity test systems. Furthermore, the amounts of total phenolics in steam extract were determined spectrometrically The steam extract of P. pubescens and P. bambusoides were presented the high activity (69.4% and 64.0%, respectively.). The steam extract from Pyllostachys species showed a hydrogen peroxide scavenging activity of approximately 50.4% - 54.6% when compared to that of the standard gallic acid. The anticancer activities of steam extract were determined using a MTT assay. Assessment of the cytotoxic effect of the steam extract on PC-3 cells showed that the P. bambusoides (20.85%) and P. pubescens (20.41%) were superior in induced cytotoxicity compared with the steam extract of P. nigra var. henonis (1.15%). Findings from this study indicated that steam extract of P. bambusoides and P. pubescens possessed potential as medicinal drug especially in prostate cancer treatment.
Caulis Bambusae in Taenia is widely used in Korea and China due to its various pharmacological activity. The present study aims to investigate the effect of the methanol extract of Caulis Bambusae in Taenia (CB) from Phyllostachys nigra Munro var. henonis Stapf (Gramineae) on amyloid ${\beta}$ protein (25-35) $(A{\beta}\;(25-35))$, a synthetic 25-35 amyloid peptide, -induced neurotoxicity using cultured rat cortical neurons. CB, over a concentration range of $10-50{\mu}g/{\mu}l$, inhibited the $A{\beta}\;(25-35)\;(10\;{\mu}M)$-induced neuronal cell death, as assessed by a 3-[4,5-dimethyIthiazole-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyl-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay and the number of apoptotic nuclei, evidenced by Hoechst 33342 staining. CB $(50\;{\mu}g/{\mu}l)$ inhibited glutamate release into medium induced by $10\;{\mu}M\;A{\beta}$, (25-35) which was measured by HPLC. Pretreatment of CB $(50\;{\mu}g/{\mu}l)$ inhibited $10{\mu}M\;A{\beta}$ (25-35)-induced elevation of cytosolic calcium concentration $([Ca^{2+}]_c)$, which was measured by a fluorescent dye, fluo-4 AM, and generation of reactive oxygen species. These results suggest that CB prevents $A{\beta}$ (25-35)-induced neuronal ell damage in vitro.
