Land-based seaweed (Gracilaria) cultivation systems may provide products with high quality and biosafety for human consumption, as well as for other high value applications. However, a limitation for this land based system is high management costs. The objective of this study was to determine if the management costs for Gracilaria cultivation can be reduced without a decrease in productivity by using $CO_2$ injection along with a high stocking density and high photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), and commercially available fertilizers. When Gracilaria tikvahiae was cultivated at a high stocking density and high PAR, coupled with $CO_2$ enhancement, the productivity was significantly higher than that at a lower stocking density, low light without $CO_2$ injection. We also found that G. tikvahiae grown in a medium of commercially available fertilizer (Jack's Special, JS) showed a similar growth rate and productivity to that grown in von Stosch's enriched (VSE) seawater, while the cost for JS media is only 2% of the cost for VSE. These results suggest that $CO_2$ injection and commercial fertilizer may be a potential way to provide sustainability in land-based Gracilaria cultivation systems.
Determining 'photosynthetically active radiation' (PAR) is a key part of calculating phytoplankton productivity in a biogeochemical model. We explore the daily and seasonal variability in the ratio of PAR irradiance to total irradiance that occurred at Ieodo Ocean Research Station (IORS) in the East China Sea under clear-sky conditions in 2004 using a simple radiative transfer model (RTM). Meteorological data observed at IORS and aerosol optical properties derived from Aerosol Robotic Network observations at Gosan are used for the RTM. Preliminary results suggest that the use of simple PAR irradiance-ratio values is appropriate in calculating phytoplankton productivity as follows: an average of $0.44\;({\pm}0.01)$ in January to an average of $0.48\;({\pm}0.01)$ in July, with average daily variabilities over these periods of about $0.016\;({\pm}0.008)$ and $0.025\;({\pm}0.008)$, respectively. The model experiments demonstrate that variations in the major controlling input parameters (i.e. solar zenith angle, precipitable water vapor and aerosol optical thickness) cause PAR irradiance ratio variation at daily and seasonal timescales. Further, increases (>0.012) in the PAR irradiance ratio just below the sea-surface are positively correlated with high solar zenith angles and strong wind stresses relative to those just above the sea-surface.
Carbon dioxide (CO₂) and ozone (O₃) fluxes were measured over Glycine max canopy using the bowen ratio energy balance method at Fuchu - 20 km west of Tokyo, in late July and late September 1996. The CO₂, and O₃, fluxes were influenced by variation in leaf area index (LAI) during the measuring period. When LAI was more than 3.0, the CO₂ flux was found to be positively correlated with photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). The O₃, flux was always positive with an average deposition velocity for this case of about 0.5 mol m/sup -2/s/sup -1/. A positive correlation existed between the deposition velocity of O₃ and CO₂ during the period of LAI>2.0.
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of the salinity on growth, inorganic ion content, and photosynthetic rate ($\textrm{P}^{N}$) in Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) with complex fertilizer (CF) and NaCl concentrations. The salinity was applied to plant using NaCl and CF, and controlled an EC as 0.0, 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 dS $\textrm{m}^{-1}$. The salinity treated three times at 35, 42 and 49 d after transplanting. The leaf area in different electrical conductivity (EC) decreased only the higher NaCl 1.0 dS $\textrm{m}^{-1}$. The root growth increased with CF and especially, it was two times higher at 3.0 dS $\textrm{m}^{-1}$ than that of control. But the root growth sharply decreased with NaCl compared to CF. The light saturation point of Korean ginseng was around 100 $\mu\textrm{mol}\;\textrm{m}^{-2}\textrm{s}^{-1}$ photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), and $\textrm{P}^{N}$ increased as CF increased but decreased with NaCl especially at the late growth stage. The $\textrm{Na}^{+}$ content in Korean ginseng increased sharply with NaCl.

본 연구에서는 MODIS(MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) 다중 위성영상을 기반으로 전국 시공간 토양수분 및 토양수분 기반의 가뭄지수 SWDI(Soil Water Deficit Index)를 산정하였다.
Spectroradiometric light transmittance from 300 to 1,100nm in the greenhouse covered with the CEM BIO polyethylene film was greater than that in the greenhouse covered with polyethylene film (control). As a whole, solar radiation transmittance into greenhouse was a half level, due to shades caused by double layer covering, frame and equipment. Net radiation energy emitted throughout surface of the greenhouse covered with CEM BIO polyethylene film was 5,424.5W.m$^{-2}$ , which was lower by 2.9% as compared to that of the greenhouse covered with polyethylene film. Photosynthetically active radiation from 400 to 700nm of the greenhouse covered with CEM BIO polyethylene film was 3,861.2W.m$^{-2}$ , which was higher by 3.8% as compared to hat of the greenhouse covered with polyethylene film. Accumulated minimum air temperature from Oct. 7, 1997 to Oct. 16, 1997 of the greenhouse covered with CEM BIO polyethylene film was 100.5$^{\circ}C$, which was higher by 2.5$^{\circ}C$ as compared to that of the greenhouse covered with polyethylene film. As results, height, stem diameter, leaf count, leaf area, fresh weight and dry weight of green pepper plants and canopy production structure measured at 30 days after transplanting were enhanced. Mean fruit weight n the greenhouse covered with CEM BIO polyethylene film was 11.28 g and 1.25 g greater as compared to that in the greenhouse covered with polyethylene film, due to increased fruit diameter and flesh thickness. Percent marketable fruits produced in the greenhouse covered with CEM BIO polyethylene film were 96.1%, and was greater by 2.7% thant that of the greenhouse covered with polyethylnee film due to decreased infection, sterility, severe curve and twisted fruits. The green pepper yield of the greenhouse covered with CEM BIO polyethylene film from Nov. 19, 1997 to Feb. 3, 1998 was greater by 974 kg per hectare than that of the greenhouse covered with polyethylene film, but the total fruit had no difference.
There are increasing evidences of climate change in the Antarctic and Arctic Oceans, especially elevated temperature due to the continuous burning of the fossil fuels and ultraviolet B(UV-B) flux within the ozone hole. Light-dependent, temperature-sensitive, and fast-growing organisms respond to these physical and biogeochemical changes. Polar marine phytoplankton, which are pioneer endemic species and important carbon contributors in the polar waters, are therefore highly suitable biological indicators of such changes. By virtue of light requirement, the primary producers are exposed to extreme seasonal fluctuations in temperature, photosynthetically active radiation, and UV radiation. Local environmental warming and increased UV-B radiation during ozone depletion may have profound effects on the primary producers that are primary carbon producers in the polar water. Small changes in climate temperature and solar radiation may have profound effects on the activity threshold of the polar phytoplanktion. To demonstrate biological response to the environmental changes, standardized representative natural and biological parameters are needed so that replicate samples (including controls) can be taken over extended periods of time. In this paper, we review general characteristics of polar phytoplankton, their environment, environmental changes in the polar waters, the effects on the environmental changes to the polar phytoplankton, and the importance of the polar phytoplankton to understand the global environmental changes. The temporal and spatial variations of size-structured phytoplankton dynamics in Youngsan Lake were investigated to explore potential mechanims controlling the dynamics in the Youngsan Lake. Field data were collected monthly from February to October, 2003 at 6 stations along the axis of Youngsan Lake. In this study, phytoplankton (chlorophyll $\alpha$) were categorized into three size classes: micro-size ($>20{\mu}m$), nano-size ($2{\sim}20{\mu}m$) and pico-size ($<20{\mu}m$). Water temperature, light attenuation coefficients, PAR (photosynthetically active radiation) and suspended solids were measured to analyze relationship between physical-chemical properties and size structure of phytoplankton. Phytoplankton blooms developed during March, July and October in the upper region of the main stem whereas small-scaled spring bloom was observed in the lower region. The scales of phytoplankton blooms were higher in the upper regions than the lower region and blooms were predominated by micro-size class in upper region but predominated by nano-size class in lower region. Growth of size-structured phytoplankton appeared to be controlled by rather light availability than temperature-dependant metabolisms in the system. Phytoplankton growth may be also supported by ambient nutrients available in the water column from analyses of chlorophyll $\alpha$ vs. nutrient concentrations including nitrite+nitrate and orthophosphate. Growth of nano-sized phytoplankton alone appeared to be supported by orthophosphate as well as nitrite+nitrate indicating that response of phytoplankton to nutrient inputs may be size-dependent.
This study was conducted to investigate the optimum shading material of rain shelter in Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer. Results obtained from our experiment can be summarized as follows. From photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) as shade materials on sunny day, temperature under rain shelter was low in comparison with that under polyethylene net. It was ranged from 3 to $5^{\circ}C$ Survival rate of 3,4, and 5 year-old ginsengs under shade materials of rain shelter was lower than that under polyethylene net. Root fresh weight in ginseng grown under rain shelter was increased into about 5.0g in 3 year-old, 10g in 4 year-old and 8g in 5 year-old ginsengs. From investigating root grade of 3, 4, and 5 year-old ginsengs, we confirmed that rain shelter was more effective than the other as shading materials. Root size of 3, 4, 5 year-old ginsengs grown under rain shelter is distributed in bigger size than that grown under polyethylene net. Also, in the case of saponin contents, the ginseng grown under the shade material of rain shelter was higher than that under polyethylene net.
A wind tunnel consisting of two air flow conditioners with polycarbonate pipes, a plant growth room, a suction fan and fan controller, and fluorescent lamps, was designed to investigate the interactions between the growth of plug seedlings under artificial light and their Physical environments. Light transmissivities in the plant growth room based on the photosynthetic photon flux density and photosynthetically active radiation was appeared to be 96.3% and 96.8%, respectively. Measurement showed a uniformity in the vertical profiles of air current speed at the middle and rear regions of plug trays in wind tunnel. This result indicated that the development of a wind tunnel based on the design criteria of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers was adequate. Air current speed inside the plug stand was significantly decreased due to the resistance by the leaves of plug seedlings and boundary layer developed over and below the plug stand. Driving force to facilitate the diffusion of gas inside the plug stand might be regarded as extremely low. Aerodynamic characteristics above the plug stand under artificial light were investigated. As the air current speed increased, zero plane displacement decreased but roughness length and frictional velocity increased. Zero plane displacement linearly increased with the average height of plug seedlings. The wind tunnel developed in this study would be useful to investigate the effects of air current speed on the microclimate over and inside the plug stand and to collect basic data for a large-scale plug production under artificial light in a semi-closed ecosystem.
