Ion diffusion and chemical binding to acrylic polymer were investigated in a solid film. The composition of acrylic monomers containing amino group and carboxylic acid was adjusted for rapid ion migration in the film. p-Methylred (PMR) and phenolphthalein derivatives were optically sensitive to the concentration of proton and hydroxyl anion, respectively and verified the ion migration through the film layers. A rapid proton migration was observed in the film of a high amino content. On the other hand, $OH^-$ migration occurred rapidly in a high content of carboxylic acid group. The proton migration occurred through the internal layer as well as surface layer of a film and was reversible during 50 repetition examination. Copper(II) ion migration was examined with a Rhodamine-containing polymer film. The light absorption and emission spectra of a Rhodamine-Cu complex showed the key contribution of carboxylic acid group to the Cu(II) migration in a film.
The most common sources of biological trace material which are found in crime scene are the human bloodstains. Reliable identification in the forensic casework is important as it provides crucial insights into crime scene reconstruction and can thus contribute towards solving crimes. Blood-stains are routinely tested in forensic practise using various methods including the leucomalachite green (LMG) test, Kastle-Meyer phenolphthalein test, tetramethylbenzidine test, orthotolidine test, or the luminol chemoluminescence test with the latter cleaning attempts. All these presumptive thus indicative but not identifying tests take advantage of the peroxidase-like activity of the heme unit of the hemoglobin molecule in human blood. Therefore, false-positive results can be caused by the presence of strong oxidants, such as chlorine-containing detergents or by true peroxidases (e.g., from plants). In this study, composition for Gum guaiac was evaluated for the forensic identification of bloodstain and compared with the LMG. The sensitivity and specificity of the composition for Gum guaiac were examined more stable in bloodstain. The positive of Composition for Gum guaiac shown even with the 100,000-fold diluted bloodstain, which was no difference in comparison with LMG test. It was shown that composition for Gum guaiac was very stable to resist boiling for 20 minutes and the effect of bacteria did not affect the genetic analysis as well. The above result of the crime scene investigation, composition for Gum guaiac is easily expected to help identifying bloodstain in the evidences.
We developed analytical methods using high performance chromatography (HPLC) and liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) for the simultaneous determination of 80 unapproved compounds in dietary supplements. The target compounds for analysis were unapproved ingredients (e.g., pharmaceuticals) that have potential adverse effects on consumers owing to accidental misuse, overuse, and interaction with other medication in dietary supplement. Two analytical methods were tested to identify the optimal validation results according to AOAC guideline. As a result, limit of quantification (LOQ) was 0.14-0.5 ㎍ mL-1; linearity (r2) was ≥ 0.99; accuracy (expressed as recovery) was 78.9-114%; precision (relative standard deviation) was ≤ 4.28% in the HPLC method. In the LC-MS/MS method, LOQ was 0.01-2 ng mL-1, linearity (r2) was ≥0.98, accuracy was 71.7-119%; precision was ≤ 12.5%. The developed methods were applied to 51 dietary supplements collected from 2019 to 2021 through MFDS alert system. Based on our previous monitoring study, major compounds were icariin, sibutramine, yohimbine, sildenafil, tadalafil, sennosides (A, B), cascarosides (A, B, C, D), and phenolphthalein. In this study, we re-analyzed samples of detected compounds, and evaluated the statistical difference using Bland-Altman analysis to compare two analytical approaches between HPLC and LC-MS/MS. These results showed a good agreement between two methods that can be used to monitor the unapproved ingredients in dietary supplements. The developed two methods are complementarily suitable for monitoring the adulteration of 80 unapproved compounds in dietary supplements.

The total acidity (TA) of Makgeolli was affected by suspended solids and $CO_2$ produced during the fermentation process. Nine Makgeollis (four sterilized and five unsterilized Makgeollis) were collected in the market, and their TAs were compared before and after filtration and $CO_2$ removal. TAs of sterilized Makgeollis were 0.379~0.477%, which significantly decreased to 0.167~0.225% after filtration and 0.132~0.170% after $CO_2$ removal (P<0.05). TAs of unsterilized Makgeollis were 0.412~0.467% and decreased to 0.157~0.365% after filtration and 0.143~0.280% after $CO_2$ removal (P<0.05). TAs of Makgeollis were compared by three methods using different indicators. The TAs of sterilized and unsterilized Makgeollis were 0.105~0.123% and 0.105~0.200%, respectively, by bromthymol blue+neutral red (light green), 0.129~0.154% and 0.130~0.255%, respectively, by phenolphthalein (faint pink), and 0.120~0.146% and 0.130~0.232%, respectively, by bromthymol (blue). Nowadays, Makgeolli is commercialized with various distinct colors, and thus it is important to select appropriate indicators for proper titration endpoint identification for TA measurement. The compositions of organic acids profiles varied depending on sterilized or unsterilized Makgeollis, in which oxalic acid (0.108~0.329 mg/mL), malic acid (ND to 0.134 mg/mL), lactic acid (0.127~0.776 mg/mL), and citric acid (ND to 1.159 mg/mL) were found, and lactic acid was in unsterilized more than sterilized Makgeollis.
${\beta}$-Glucuronidase from bull seminal plasma was partially purified by $(NH_4)_2SO_4$fractionation, two successive DEAE-cellulose columns, isoelectric focusing (pH 4 to 6) and Gel filtration on Sephadex G-200. Only one form of ${\beta}$-glucuronidase was obtained by isoelectric focusing at pH 5.13. Highly purified ${\beta}$-glucuronidase had specific activity of 34 units/mg protein and showed one major and some minor contaminants by disc gelk electrophoresis. The enzyme showed maximum activity at pH 5.2 and at $48^{\circ}C$. The enzyme was completely inhibited by 1,4 saccharo-${\alpha}$-lactone (5 mM). Albumin and 0.15 M NaCl increased the ${\beta}$-glucuronidase activity. Km of ${\beta}$-glucuronidase using phenolphthalein mono-${\beta}$-glucuronic acid as substrate was 2.9 mM and Vmax was $0.8{\mu}$mole/min. The enzyme appeared to be a glycoprotein by its binding to concanvalin·A. Rabbit and human sperm-acrosomal extracts and seminal plasma showed high ${\beta}$-glucuronidase activity.

Kastle-Meyer (KM) test is one of presumptive tests used to detect latent blood in crime scenes. While this method is more sensitive than others, false positive reaction can be shown where blood does not exist. In this study, we tried to suggest a new application method to solve this problem. Reaction time and aspect of reaction of this new method was compared with two conventional methods in order to identify the effectiveness and identifiability. As a result, there was no statistically significant difference in sensitivity between the methods. In addition, in case of blood with a dilution ratio of 5000:1 or less, positive reaction showed immediately, making it easy to distinguish the reaction from false positive reaction. However, it became difficult to distinguish them with the reaction time as the dilution ratio increased, and this phenomenon could be supplemented observing aspect of the reaction when using the new method. Therefore, this study suggested a new method for KM test that can be used more accurately in the field.

Some recent researches reported that high temperature rising decreases the carbonation depth of concrete, which is contrary to the previous research results. Carbonation has been known as a reaction between calcium hydroxide and carbon dioxide. But a few researches showed that the other cement hydrates as well as calcium hydroxide react with carbon dioxide. This paper investigates the influence of temperature on carbonation and the variation of $Ca(OH)_2$ and $CaCO_3$ by carbonation. In order to estimate the carbonation depth and the quantities of reactant and product of carbonation reaction, phenolphthalein testing and thermagravimetric analyzer test were conducted. The measurement of carbonation depth with temperature showed that the temperature increase from $20^{\circ}C$ to $30^{\circ}C$C in carbonation environment makes the carbonation depth larger, but the increase from $30^{\circ}C$ to $40^{\circ}C$ has a small influence on the carbonation depth. Comparing calcium hydroxide and calcium carbonate with temperature, the quantity of $CaCO_3$ of specimen carbonated at $30^{\circ}C$ is greater than that of specimen carbonated at $40^{\circ}C$ and the quantity of $Ca(OH)_2$ of specimen carbonated at $30^{\circ}C$ is similar to that of specimen carbonated at $40^{\circ}C$. This observation shows that there is the optimum temperature increasing carbonation depth and the optimum temperature is close to $30^{\circ}C$.
In the development of enteral foods for the patients with diarrhea, soybean hull, by-products of soybean processing, was used to prepare crude dietary fiber extracts (soybean hull fiber, SHF). Total dietary fiber content of SHF is 85% and their composition are 86.1% cellulose, 8.1% hemi-cellulose, and 4.7% lignin. The effects of SHF on the prevention of diarrhea were studied in animal. Spraque-Dawley (SD) rats were fed AIN93G diets containing 5% dietary fiber for 3days simultaneously inducing diarrhea with the phenolphthalein Mg citrate solution. On day 4, feces were collected at different time point. Dietary fibers used for the animal study were SHF, soybean cotyledon fiber (SCF), psyllium husk fiber (PHF), and chicory fiber (CF). ${\alpha}$-cellulose was used as a control. Body weight gain, calorie consumed and food efficiency ratio among the experimental groups were not different. However, water content in the feces of SHF group was significantly lower by 10%, compared with other groups at 24hrs. time point. This effect was even greater in the feces collected later than 24 hrs. time point. SHF seems to have a greater effects on slow the symptom of diarrhea. Based on the previous results, enteral food enriched with SHF were prepared and its effect was compared with other commercially available products from domestic or imported ones. Weight changes among experimental groups were not different, but the moisture content of feces consumed SHF enriched products were lower than that of other products. Approximately 10% decrease in water content was observed from feces collected at 24 hr time point. According to the sensory evaluation, overall acceptability of the enteral food enriched with SHF was 3.24 out of 5 indicating that taste of this product is acceptable.
The G-class cement is commonly used in practice for geothermal well cementing in order to protect a steel casing that is designed to transport hot water/steam from deep subsurface to ground surface during operating a geothermal power plant. In order to maintain optimal performance of geothermal wells, physical properties of the cementing material should be satisfactory. In this paper, relevant factors (i.e., groutability, uniaxial compression strength, thermal conductivity and free fluid content) of the G-class cement were experimentally examined with consideration of various water-cement (w/c) ratios. Important findings through the experiments herein are as follows. (1) Groutability of the G-class cement increases by adding a small dose of retarder. (2) There would be a structural defect caused when the w/c ratio is kept higher in order to secure groutability. (3) Thermal conductivity of the G-class cement is small enough to prevent heat loss from hot steam or water to the outer ground formation during generating electricity. (4) The G-class cement does not form free water channel in cementing a geothermal well. (5) The Phenolphthalein indicator is applicable to the distinction of the G-class cement from the drilling mud.

There are several types of petroleum products used for the fuel oil, according to their respective quality standards, grades and usage. Depending on the degree of oil tax rate by country, even the same petroleum products will have price gap. The illegal mixing of cheap petroleum products, which are subject to the lower tax rate, with relatively expensive transportation fuel causes problems such as tax evasion, environmental pollution and vehicle breakdown. In order to prevent illicit production and mixing of these different petroleum products, a small amount of markers are legally added to specific petroleum products. In Korea, markers are introduced and used to prevent illegal activity that kerosene used as fuel for house and commercial boiler are mixed with automotive diesel fuels, and marker contents are analyzed to use UV-Vis spectrophotometer and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). In this study, we have developed a method to qualitatively and quantitatively determine the marker added to petroleum products by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) without adding developing reagent or sample pre-treatments.
