  • To estimate nondestructively strength performances of laminated woods, 3-ply parallel- and cross-laminated wood specimens exposed under atmosphere conditions after bending creep test were prepared for this study. The effects of density of species, arrangement of laminae and lamination types on dynamic MOE obtained by flexural vibration were investigated, and regression analyses were conducted in order to estimate static bending strength and bending creep performances. Dynamic MOE of parallel-laminated woods showed 1.0~1.2 times higher values than static bending MOE, and those of cross-laminated woods showed 1.0~1.4 times higher values than static bending MOE. The degree of anisotropy of dynamic MOE perpendicular to the grain of face laminae versus that parallel to the grain of face laminae was markedly decreased by cross-laminating. There were strong correlations between dynamic MOE by flexural vibration and static bending MOE (correlation coefficient r = 0.919~0.972) or bending MOR (correlation coefficient r = 0.811~0.947) of 3-ply laminated woods, and the correlation coefficient were higher in parallel-laminated woods than in cross-laminated woods. It indicated that static bending strength performances were able to be estimated from dynamic MOE by flexural vibration. Also, close correlations between the reciprocal of dynamic MOE by flexural vibration and initial compliance at 0.008 h of 3-ply laminated woods were found (correlation coefficient r = 0.873~0.991). However, the correlation coefficient between the reciprocal of dynamic MOE and creep compliance at 168 h of 3-ply laminated woods was considerably lower than those between dynamic MOE and initial compliance, and it was hard to estimate creep compliance with a high accuracy from dynamic MOE due to the variation of creep deformation.

  • The electromigration phenomenon in lead-free flip-chip solder joint has been one of the serious problems. To understand the mechanism of this phenomenon, the crystallographic orientation of Sn grain in the Sn-Ag-Cu solder bump has been analyzed. Different time to failure and different microstructural changes were observed in the all test vehicle and bumps, respectively. Fast failure and serious dissolution of Cu electrode was observed when the c-axis of Sn grain parallel to electron flow. On the contrary of this, slight microstructural changes were observed when the c-axis of Sn perpendicular to electron flow. In addition, underfill could enhance the electromigration reliability to prevent the deformation of solder bump during EM test.

  • Jurassic granite from Geochang was analysed with respect to the characteristics of the rock cleavage. we have mainly discussed the structual anisotropy formed by microcracks. The phases of distribution of microcracks were well evidenced from the enlarged photomicrographs(${\times}6.7$) of the thin section. The planes of principal set of microcracks are parallel to the rift plane and those of secondary set are parallel to the grain plane. These rift and grain microcracks are mutually near-perpendicular on the hardway planes. From the directional angle(${\theta}$) - total length($L_t$), number(N) and density(${\rho}$) chart, the curve patterns of the above microcrack parameters reflect the phases of distribution of microcracks. Microcrack parameters such as number, length and density show an order of rift > grain > hardway. These results indicate a relative magnitude of the rock cleavage. Meanwhile, brazilian tensile strengths were measured with respect to the six directions. The results revealed a strong correlation between mechanical property with the above microcrack parameters. These general results correspond to those of the previous study for Jurassic granites from Pocheon and Hapcheon. Image processing technique for the enlarged photomicrograph of the thin section was carried out. The grain 1(G1) microcrack arrays developed in quartz and feldspar grains show excellent distribution on the photomicrograph. In particular, the directional angle of each microcrack set can be ascertained easily by brief image processing for the above photomicrograph.

  • The plywood for concrete form is regarded as a laminate plate composed of orthotropic materials and the flexural analysis is conducted by applying the laminate plate theory, in which the four edges of the plate is assumed to be simply supported and the concentric point lateral load is applied. The results of flexural experiment are compared with the theoretical ones. Theoretically predicted results coincide with experimental ones up to the point of deflection less than 1/4 of plate thickness. In addition, when the plywood is regarded as an isotropic plate for simple analysis, the geometric average of the elastic modulus measured in the direction parallel to the face grain (E11) and perpendicular to the face grain (E22) could be used for the elastic modulus of isotropic plate.

  • Some alloying elements such as Cr, B, Ti and Si were added individually or as a mixture to Fe-30 at.%Al alloys. The alloys were melted using an arc furnace and then heat-treated for homogenization at 1000$^{\circ}C$ for 7 days and followed by rolling at 1000$^{\circ}C$. The alloying elements on rolling characteristics were investigated by the microstructures and fracture mode before and after rolling. The microstructures before rolling showed that all of the alloys had equiaxed grains. On the other hand, the microstructures of rolling plane as well as its perpendicular plane became elongated after rolling. The alloys such as Fe-30Al, Fe-30Al-3Ti, Fe-30Al-0.5B, Fe-30Al-5Cr and Fe-30Al-3Ti-0.5B revealed better rolling behaviour from the point that intergranular and cleavage fractures were not fundamentally occurred. But the addition of 5Ti or 3Si to Fe-Al alloys had detrimental effects. The Ti-added alloy system such as Fe-30Al-5Ti, Fe-30Al-5Ti-5Cr, Fe-30Al-3Ti-5Cr and Fe-30Al-5Ti-0.5B were cracked through grain and showed cleavage fracture. The Si-added alloy system such as Fe-30Al-5Si, Fe-27Al-3Si and Fe-27Al-5Cr-3Si were cracked along the grain boundary and showed intergranular fracture. $DO_3{\leftrightarrow}B_2$ transition temperature of Fe-30at.%Al alloy was 520$^{\circ}C$, whereas the addition of 3Ti and 3Ti+0.5B comparably increased the temperature to 797 and 773$^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • The objective of this study was to reveal the impact of thinning and pruning regimes on the physical and mechanical properties of clonal teak wood planted in Java. In this study, a 15-year-old clonal teak plantation was carried out and the obtained data were evaluated with analysis of variance (ANOVA). The results showed that different thinning intensities had a significant impact on the alteration of heartwood volume development (F = 25.63; p < 0.0001). Meanwhile, the impact of different thinning treatments in several physical properties depends on the pruning treatment levels [moisture content (F= 12.18, p < 0.0001); tangential shrinkage (F = 15.60, p < 0.0001); T/R ratio (F = 7.17, p < 0.0001); and volumetric shrinkage (F = 10.81, p < 0.0001)]. However, different thinning intensities had no significant impact on wood basic density alteration (F = 0.72, p = 0.486), while pruning intensities affect the differences between radial (F = 3.52, p = 0.030) and volumetric shrinkage (F = 3.13, p = 0.044). In mechanical properties, thinning intensity levels did not promote any significant differences [modulus of elasticity (F = 1.41, p = 0.248); modulus of rupture (F = 0.94, p = 0.392); compressive strength parallel to grain (F = 0.21, p = 0.813); and compressive strength perpendicular to the grain (F = 0.41, p = 0.669)]. Meanwhile, different pruning treatments and combination treatments were not significantly altered all mechanical properties. These results indicated that the thinning and pruning regimes can enhance the mechanical properties without having a serious alteration in the physical properties of clonal teak wood.

  • The effects of alloying elements on the superplastic properties of Al-Li based alloys had been investigated. The intermediate thermo-mechanical treated (ITMT) Al-2.0wt%Li, Al-2.0wt%Li-1.0wt%Mg, Al-2.0wt%Li-0.12wt%Zr and Al-2.0wt%Li-1.2wt%Cu-1.0wt%Mg-0.12wt%Zr alloys were tested in tension at various temperature (400, 450, 500 and $550^{\circ}C$) and strain rate($6.7{\times}10^{-3}$, $1.0{\times}10^{-2}$, $1.6{\times}10^{-2}$ and $5.0{\times}10^{-2}/sec$). The results were as follows : The superplasticity in binary, ternary and pentanary alloys appeared at 500 to $550^{\circ}C$, and good strain rate for superplasticity. $1.6{\times}10^{-2}/sec{\sim}1.0{\times}10^{-2}/sec$ for a binary alloy and $1.0{\times}10^{-2}/sec{\sim}6.7{\times}10^{-3}/sec$ for ternary and pentanary alloys. A Zr-added ternary alloy had best value of elongation (730%) in four alloys at $550^{\circ}C$ of tension temperature and $1.0{\times}10^{-2}/sec$ of strain rate. The strain rate was greatly dependent on tension temperature and true strain rate was more than 1.0 at all test temperature and strain rate. In binary and Mg-added teranry alloys. the necks were slightly formed and their fracture surface had lips shape, but Zr-added ternary and pentanary alloy fractured along the grain boundary without necking. Their dislocations moved to grain boundary during superplasticity deformation and arranged perpendicular to grain boundary. Super plastic deformation was made by grain boundary slip of dislocation slip creep and model of core and mantle.

  • CoFeV thin film alloys were fabricated by electrodeposition, and the dependences of their magnetic properties on the current density were investigated using an X-ray diffractometer and a vibrating sample magnetometer. The deposited Co increased from about 45 to 60 wt.% with increasing current density until $25mA/cm^2$ whereas the deposited Fe decreased from about 55 to 40 wt.% with increasing current density until $25mA/cm^2$. The deposited V, about 2 wt.%, was independent of the current density. The current efficiencies of electrodeposition decreased linearly from about 40 to 29% with increasing current density. The X-ray diffraction measurement showed that all peaks of the CoFeV films were consistent with those of a typical Co hcp and Fe bcc mixed phase. An increase in the current density decreased the grain size and increased the lattice constant. The saturation magnetization increased from about 2.2 to 2.5 T with increasing current density. The coercivity measured in the perpendicular direction decreased from 260 to 120 Oe with increasing current density; a drastic drop of 60 Oe occurred at $5mA/cm^2$. The coercivity measured in the in-plane direction remained almost unchanged, at about 20 Oe, with increasing current density.

  • Co-based alloy thin films ddeposited by fcing targets sputtering(FTS) were investigated for use in high-density magnetic recording media to determine how their magnetic properties are dependent on the sputtering conditions, and thus to find appropriate parameters that allow the sputtering and thin films to meet the specificiations for magnetic properties. FTS can discharge at lower working gas pressure than other sputtering methods such as dcmagnetron sputteing because the plasma is sufficiently confined by a magnetic field applied perpendicular to both of the target planes, which results in plasma-free substrates. Co-Cr-Ta films were deposited by FTS on glass and silicon substrates at substrate temperature between room temperature and $350^{\circ}C$, and at argon gas pressure between 0.1 and 10mTorr. The films were also deposited on polyimide tapes at substrate temperature of $130^{\circ}C$ and argon gas pressure of 1 mTorr. The effective advantages of Ta as an additional element were investigated, using the same films on the tapes. As a result of the experiment, it was found that better magnetic properties were obtained in the ranges of higher temperature and lower argon gas pressure with background pressure in thr range of $1.5 \times 10^{-6}$ Torr. Ta addition at 2 to 4 atomic percent almost havled the Co-Cr grain sizes, indicating that Ta addition at an appropriate atomic percent is effective for improving the microstructure and characteristics of Co-Cr films.

  • Multilayered films of Co/Pd have been studied as a candidate material for a high density perpendicular recording medium due to higher anisotropy energy. However, high exchange coupling among grains results in large transition noise. To reduce the exchange coupling and grain size, addition of 3rd elements and physical separation of grains have been attempted. In the present paper, effects of sputtering pressure, Co sublayer thickness and Pd underlayer thickness on magnetic properties and microstructures were studied. It was found that by increasing sputtering pressure from 5 mTorr to 25 mTorr, Ms decreased to one half and coercivity increased more than 5000 Oe. The increase of the coercivity is associated with physical separation of grains by high pressure sputtering. Ms per volume of Co for Co/Pd multilayered film deposited at 25 mTorr shows continuous decrease with increasing Co sublayer thickness. This was related to void formation and intermixing of Co/Pd interface. Also, effect of Pd underlayer thickness on magnetic properties will be discussed.
