  • N-acetylneuraminic acid is one of the major derivatives of sialic acid. is widely distributed in mammalian cells as the ${\alpha}$2-3- or ${\alpha}$2-6-linked nonreducing terminal residue of oligosaccharide chains of glycoconjugates, and plays important structural and functional roles at the cell membrane surface. The analysis of sialylated glycoproteins is an important part of glycoprotein characterization, especially because sialylation or desialylation in oligosaccharides often causes dramatic changes in the function of glycoproteins. • Quantum dot infrared photodetectors (QDIPs) based on Stranski-Krastanov (SK) quantum dots (QDs) have been widely explored for improved device performance using various designs of heterostructures. However, one of the biggest limitations of this approach is the "pancake" shape of the dot, with a base of 20-30 nm and a height of 4-6 nm. This limits the 3D confinement in the quantum dot and reduces the ratio of normal incidence absorption to the off-axis absorption. One of the alternative growth modes to the formation of SK QDs is a sub-monolayer (SML) deposition technique, which can achieve a much higher density, smaller size, better uniformity, and has no wetting layer as compared to the SK growth mode. Due to the advantages of SML-QDs, the SML-QDIP design has attractive features such as increased normal incidence absorption, strong in-plane quantum confinement, and narrow spectral wavelength detection as compared with SK-DWELL. In this study, we report on the improved device performance of InAs/InGaAs SML-QDIP with different composition of $Al_xGa1-_xAs$ barrier. Two SML-QDIPs (x=0.07 for sample A and x=0.20 for sample B) are grown with the 4 stacks 0.3 ML InAs. It is investigated that sample A with a confinement-enhanced (CE) $Al_{0.22}Ga_{0.78}As$ barrier had a single peak at $7.8{\mu}m$ at 77 K. However, sample B with an $Al_{0.20}Ga_{0.80}As$ barrier had three peaks at (${\sim}3.5{\mu}m$, ${\sim}5{\mu}m$, ${\sim}7{\mu}m$) due to various quantum confined transitions. The measured peak responsivities (see Fig) are ~0.45 A/W (sample A, at $7.8{\mu}m$, $V_b=-0.4V$ bias) and ~1.3 A/W (sample B, at $7{\mu}m$, $V_b=-1.5V$ bias). At 77 K, sample A and B had a detectivity of $1.2{\times}10^{11}cm.Hz^{1/2}/W$ ($V_b=-0.4V$ bias) and $5.4{\times}10^{11}cm.Hz^{1/2}/W$ ($V_b=-1.5V$ bias), respectively. It is obvious that the higher $D^*$ of sample B (than sample A) is mainly due to the low dark current and high responsivity.

  • It is expected that the transport of compressed video will become a significant part of total network traffic because of the widespread introduction of multimedial services such as VOD(video on demand). Accordingly, VBR(variable bit-rate) encoded video will be widely used, due to its advantages in statistical multiplexing gain and consistent vido quality. Since the transport of video traffic requires larger bandwidth than that of voice and data, the characterization of video source and traffic modeling is very important for the design of proper resource allocation scheme in ATM networks. Suitable statistical source models are also required to analyze performance metrics such as packet loss, delay and jitter. In this paper, we analyzed and described on the characterization and traffic modeling of MPEG video sources. The models are broadly classified into two categories; i.e., statistical models and deterministic models. In statistical models, the models are categorized into five groups: AR(autoregressive), Markov, composite Marko and AR, TES, and selfsimilar models. In deterministic models, the models are categorized into $({\sigma},\;{\rho}$, parameterized model, D-BIND, and Empirical Envelopes models. Each model was analyzed for its characteristics along with corresponding advantages and shortcomings, and we made comparisons on the complexity of each model.

  • Suppressing lattice thermal conductivity of thermoelectric materials is one of the most popular approach to improve their thermoelectric performance. However, accurate characterization of suppressed lattice thermal conductivity is challenging as it can only be acquired by subtracting other contributions to thermal conductivity from the total thermal conductivity. Here we explain that electronic thermal conductivity (for all materials) and bipolar thermal conductivity (for narrow band gap materials) need to be determined accurately first to characterize the lattice thermal conductivity accurately. Methods to calculate Lorenz number for electronic thermal conductivity (via single parabolic model and using a simple equation) and bipolar thermal conductivity (via two-band model) are introduced. Accurate characterization of the lattice thermal conductivity provides a powerful tool to accurately evaluate effect of different defect engineering strategies.

  • Bending actuators composed of cellulose with an electrically conducting polymer (CP) are fabricated and their performance is characterized in the air. Two different counter ions, perchlorate and tetrafluoroborate are used as dopant ions in the polyaniline CP processing. CP-cellulose-CP trilayer and CP-cellulose bilayer samples are fabricated with different dopant ions, and their actuation performance is evaluated in terms of tip displacement, blocked force and electrical power consumption along with the humidity level and actuation frequency. The trilayer samples substantially enhanced the tip displacement compared to the bilayer ones. The actuation performance of the trilayer actuator is three times better than that of original cellulose electro-active paper (EAPap) actuator. The displacement and blocked force of CP-EAPap actuators are dependent on the humidity and frequency.

  • KARI is currently developing a geostationary ocean color imager (GOCI) for COMS. We report the progress in integrated optical modeling and analysis for stray light suppression and the end-to-end instrument performance verification including in-orbit calibration. The Sun is modeled as the emitting light source and the selected area around Korean peninsular as the observation target that scatters the sun light towards GOCI in orbit. The optical ray tracing employing active geometric scaling was then used for precise characterization of the spatial and radiometric performance at the instrument focal plane. The analysis results show positive reduction in the simulated stray light level with the design improvement including baffles. It also indicates that the ray traced in-orbit radiometric performances are effective tools for the independent assessment of more traditional linear and quadratic equation based estimation of water leaving radiance. The concept of integrated GOCI optical model and the computational method are presented.

  • In bridge engineering, maintenance strategies and thus budgetary demands are highly influenced by construction type and quality of design. Nowadays bridge owners and planners tend to include life-cycle cost analyses in their decision processes regarding the overall design trying to optimize structural reliability and durability within financial constraints. Smart permanent and short term monitoring can reduce the associated risk of new design concepts by observing the performance of structural components during prescribed time periods. The objectives of this paper are the discussion and analysis of influence line or influence field approaches in terms of (a) an efficient incorporation of monitoring information in the structural performance assessment, (b) an efficient characterization of performance indicators for the assessment of structures, (c) the ability of optimizing the positions of sensors of a monitoring system, and (d) the ability of checking the robustness of the monitoring systems applied to a structure. The proposed influence line- model correction approach has been applied to an integrative monitoring system that has been installed for the performance assessment of an existing three-span jointless bridge.

  • Chip Size Packages (CSP) are now widely used in high speed DRAM. The major driving farce of CSP development is its superior electrical performance than that of conventional package. However, the power dissipation of high speed DRAM like DDR or RAMBUS DRAM chip reaches up to near 2W. This fact makes the thermal management methods in DRAM package be more carefully considered. In this study, the thermal performances of 3 type CSPs named $\mu-BGA$^{TM}$$ $UltraCSP^{TM}$ and OmegaCSP$^{TM}$ were measured under the JEDEC specifications and their thermal characteristics were of a simulation model utilizing CFD and FEM code. The results show that there is a good agreement between the simulation and measurement within Max. 10% of $\circledM_{ja}$. And they show the wafer level CSPs have a superior thermal performance than that of $\mu-BGA.$ Especially the analysis results show that the thermal performance of wafer level CSPs are excellent fur modulo level in real operational mode without any heat sink.

  • We studied the performance of CdSe nanoparticle in the active layer of organic photovoltaics (OPVs) by changing concentration of the CdSe NPs in the P3HT:PCBM layer. We observed that the absorption peak value gradually increases with the increasing amount of CdSe NPs at 600nm wave length. However, the electrical properties of OPVs correspond less with the tendency of UV/visible result. The highest performance was shown with 10% of CdSe NPs. The device performance decreased after 10% of CdSe NPs, this shows the dependencies of performanc of hybrid solar cells on the CdSe NPs loading amount. The resulting OPVs with 10 % of CdSe NPs show a short circuit current density ($J_{sc}$) of $6.96mA/cm^2$, open circuit voltage ($V_{oc}$) of 0.61V, fill factor (FF) of 0.59, and power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 2.53% under AM 1.5 ($100mW/cm^2$).

  • titanate and a silicon carbide/zirconium diboride particulate composite have each been blended with thermoplastic of aqueous binders and extruded. The green extrudates have diameters ranging between 50 and 150 ㎛ and polyethylene-base 150 ${\mu}m$ diameter fibers can be drawn down at elevated temperature to approximately 40 ${\mu}m$ diameter. Hollow fibers with 150${\mu}m$ outer and 90 ${\mu}m$ inner diameter can also be fabricated. Green fibers have been processed into chopped fiber felts for use as gas distributors/current collectors in an experimental solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) and the first attempts at producing simple textile structures have been successful. The fibers, tubes and felts have been successfully debound and sintered and characterization of the sintered PSZ fibers, for example, has revealed a density in excess of 99% and tensile failure stresses up to 1.0 GPa for 78 ${\mu}m$ diameter fibers.
