The aim of this study is to synthesize pathological breathy voice and to make a cepstral peak prominence (CPP) table following breathiness ranks by cepstral analysis to supplement reliability of the perceptual auditory judgment task. KlattGrid synthesizer included in Praat was used. Synthesis parameters consist of two groups, i.e., constants and variables. Constant parameters are pitch, amplitude, flutter, open phase, oral formant and bandwidth. Variable parameters are breathiness (BR), aspiration amplitude (AH), and spectral tilt (TL). Five hundred sixty samples of synthetic breathy vowel /a/ for male were created. Three raters participated in ranking of the breathiness. 217 were proved to be inadequate samples from perceptual judgment and cepstral analysis. Finally, 343 samples were selected. These CPP values and other related parameters from cepstral analysis are classified under four breathiness ranks (B0~B3). The mean and standard deviation of CPP is $16.10{\pm}1.15$ dB(B0), $13.68{\pm}1.34$ dB(B1), $10.97{\pm}1.41$ dB(B2), and $3.03{\pm}4.07$ dB(B3). The value of CPP decreases toward the severe group of breathiness because there is a lot of noise and a small quantity of harmonics.
This study was to investigate for comparison between single rating and average ratings from multiple presentations of the same stimulus for measuring the voice quality of dysphonia using 7-point equal-appearing interval (EAI) rating scale. Overall severity of voice quality for 46 /a/ vowel stimuli (23 stimuli from dysphonia, 23 stimuli from control) was rated by 3 experienced speech-language pathologists (averaged 19 years; range = 7 to 40 years). For average ratings, each stimulus was rated five times in random order and averaged from two to five times. Although higher inter-rater reliability was found in average ratings than in single rating, there were no significant differences in rating scores between single and multiple average ratings judged by experienced listeners, suggesting that auditory perceptual ratings judged by well-trained listeners have relatively good agreement with the same stimulus across the judgment. Larger variations in perceptual ratings were observed for moderate voices than for mild or severe voices, even in the average ratings.
The purpose of this experimental study was to investigate prosodic characteristics of English as spoken by Koreans. Test materials were four English words, a sentence, and a paragraph. Six female Korean speakers and five native English speakers participated in acoustic and perceptual experiments. Pitch and duration of word syllables were measured from signals and spectrograms made by the Signalize 3.04 software program for Power Mac 7200. In the perceptual experiment, accent position, intonation patterns, rhythm patterns and phrasing were evaluated by the five native English speakers. Preliminary results from this limited study show that prosodic characteristics of Koreans include (1) pitch on the first part of a word and sentence is lower than that of English speakers, but the pitch on the last part is the opposite; (2) word prosody is quite similar to that of an English speaker, but sentence prosody is quite different; (3) the weakest point of sentence prosody spoken by Koreans is in the rhythmic pattern.
This study examined which acoustic cue(s) that Korean learners of English give weight to in perceiving English lexical stress. We manipulated segmental and suprasegmental cues in 5 steps in the first and second syllables of an English stress minimal pair "object". A total of 27 subjects (14 native speakers of English and 13 Korean L2 learners) participated in the English stress judgment task. The results revealed that native Korean listeners used the F0 and intensity cues in identifying English stress and weighted vowel quality most strongly, as native English listeners did. These results indicate that Korean learners' experience with these cues in L1 prosody can help them attend to these cues in their L2 perception. However, L2 learners' perceptual attention is not entirely predicted by their linguistic experience with specific acoustic cues in their native language.
The purpose of this study was to develop a Korean assessment model for the patients with voice disorders. Interviews were conducted with 4 voice therapists and the results were analyzed by using a qualitative, constant-comparative design. According to the three themes emerged from the qualitative analysis, 10 subthemes were derived. The three main themes were 1) consideration on the disordered voice, 2) status quo of instrumental and perceptual evaluation, and 3) suggestions for the other voice therapists. The 10 subthemes can be summarized as the following: 1) judgment centering on the patients, 2) increase of the reliability of instrumental and perceptual evaluation, 3) voice therapists' positive participation in the assessment procedure of voice disorder.

Subjective voice evaluation is necessary and important to assess the voice disorders in addition to objective voice evaluation. Subjective voice evaluation is divided into examiner and examinee subjective voice assessment. The examiner assessment represents perceptual judgment to the patient's voice such as GRBAS scale, Buffalo voice profile, consensus auditory perceptual evaluation of voice (CAPE- V) and so on. The examinee assessment consists of indirect method including voice handicap index (VHI), voice outcome survey (VOS), voice symptom scale (VoiSS), voice related quality of life (V-ROQL) and direct method which is called patient's self-subjective voice rating. This review article describes a general rule, advantages and pitfalls about GRBAS scale, VHI and patient's self-subjective voice rating which are presently most representative voice assessment tools.
This paper investigates the acoustic-perceptual relation between Korean dent-alveolar fricatives and the English voiceless alveolar fricative /s/ in varied prosodic contexts (e.g., stress, accent, and word initial position). The denti-alveolar fricatives in Korean show a two-way distinction, which can be referred to as either plain (lenis) /s/ or fortis /$s^*$/. The English alveolar voiceless fricative /s/ that corresponds to the two Korean fricatives would be placed in a one-to-two non-native phoneme mapping situation when Korean listeners hear English /s/. This raises an interesting question of how the single fricative of English perceptually maps into the two-way distinction in Korean. This paper reports the acoustic-perceptual mapping pattern by investigating spectral properties of the English stimuli that are heard as either /s/ or /$s^*$/ by Korean listeners, in order to answer the two questions: first, how prosody influences fricatives acoustically, and second, how the resultant properties drive non-native listeners to interpret them as segmental features instead of as prosodic information. The results indicate that Korean listeners' responses change depending on the prosodic context in which the stimuli are placed. It implies that Korean speakers interpret some of the information provided by prosody as segmental one, and that the listeners take advantage of the information in their judgment of non-native phonemes.
We live in the era of unlimited design competition. As the importance of design is increasing in all areas including marketing, each country does its best effort on design development. However, the preparation on protecting interior design rights by intellectual property laws(IPLs) has not been enough even though they occupy an important place in the design field. It is not quite easy to make a judgement on the similarity between two images having a single common factor because the factors which are composed of interior design have complicated interactive relations between them. From the IPLs point of view, designs with the similar overall appearance are decided to be similar. Objective evaluation criteria not only for designers but also for design examiners and judges are required in order to protect interior design by the IPLs. The objective of this study is the analysis of the possibility that a computer algorithm method can be useful to decide the similarity of interior design images. According to this study, it is realized that the Img2 which is one of content-based image retrieval computer programs can be utilized to measure the degree of the similarity. The simulation results of three descriptors(CEDD, FCTH, JCD) in the Img2 showed the high degree of similar patterns compared with the results of perceptual judgment by observers. In particular, it was verified that the Img2 has high availability on interior design images with a high score of similarity below 60 which are perceptually judged by observers.
To quantitatively measure or evaluate aesthetic factors is not easy in comparison with physical, functional, behavioral or economic factors. Yet aesthetic factors essentially play an important role in design modeling process. Despite its importance, research on aesthetic assessment or the interaction of aesthetic influential elements is insufficient. Therefore, this study is intended to find the relationships between visual preference and aesthetic variables of perceptual-cognitive dimension and affective dimension in commercial space design. According to the result of this substantiation research, aesthetic variables that give a positive effect on the preference of commercial space design are unity, order, and clarity in perceptual-cognitive dimension and 'pleasant', 'relaxing' in affective dimension. On the other side, aesthetic variables that give a negative effect on the preference are contrast, complexity, and ambiguity that is a contrary concept of clarity in perceptual-cognitive dimension and 'exciting', 'arousing' in affective dimension.
The purpose of the present study was to examine if perception of visual coordination pattern is consistent with the prediction of the HKB model (Haken, Kelso, Bunz, 1985). In addition, this study aimed to see if an additional sensory information using a grid background stabilizes perception of coordination pattern. Participants joined one of two experimental groups, Normal background and Grid background, to participate the pattern recognition training session and the pattern judgment test session. Participants observed $0^{\circ}$, $18^{\circ}$, $36^{\circ}$, $54^{\circ}$, $72^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$, $108^{\circ}$, $126^{\circ}$, $144^{\circ}$, $162^{\circ}$, and $180^{\circ}$ coordination patterns characterized by two oscillating dots. The dots oscillated in 0.25 Hz for the pattern recognition training and in 0.5 Hz, 1 Hz, and 2 Hz for the pattern judgment test. Judgment score, absolute judgment error, and judgment stability out of the pattern judgment test were analyzed statistically. The landscape of pattern accuracy and stability data was "inverted-U" shape with slower oscillating frequency conditions. In the faster condition, the accuracy and stability of the judgment decreased with relative phase patterns near $180^{\circ}$. These findings consistent with the prediction of the HKB model. The grid as additional sensory information did not increase accuracy and stability in coordination perception.
